They should cut baseball, don't see no future in that program. Retain softball and build that new ball field and put in on the main campus. I think softball has to be retain, title 9 dictates that I believe.

If they remove baseball, they could cut softball and still remain T9 compliant. The issue would be the D1-FBS regulation on number of sports...which would me they'd need to apply for a waiver or move down a level to FCS (which would then allow for further expense shedding by way of the scholarship limit moving from 85 to 63 in football, something that could allow for further "balancing" on the women's sports side).

With the way that Empire is growing, I think that's going to be less and less of a point of pride in short order

By what measure is UNCC as step down from UT for a President? Its a rapidly growing institution in a strong tech based economy with increasing population growth. If her career goal is to lead a major university or state system, UNCC is a much better spring board to that than UT. I think her timing and the optics are bad, but professionally if she felt this was a great opportunity for her then thats her decision. My view is she did as much as was possible with what she had to work with (declining state support, downward enrollment and population trends in Ohio and Midwest, a terrible budget, the UTMC mess). If her career focus is advancement, than time to move on and for UT to bring in a new leader. I am not happy about the timing but I know her too well, and what efforts she has made on behalf of the institution (plus my view 25 years of experience with UT Presidents) , and progress that has been made - and yes still much needs to be done - to speak ill will of her or her performance.

Yep, in more ways than I'd ever care to describe on here good ol' Lloyd put the next administration in such a hole that even getting to the point of being back to pre-Jacobs Admin levels was going to be hard in a 5 year contract. What she has done is admirable given the position she was put it...but she did mishandle quite a few situations and hires as well. I think the University is better in many ways than it was prior to her arrival, and that, to me, should be the measure of an administrator.

Jacobs was in the same class as Vic Kapoor, except he had more time to do damage.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
And I am not tone death to her faults and mistakes, but no one is perfect regardless of their position and salary, she was honest and fair to deal with, listened when needed and took advice, while acting as and presenting herself as a leader of people. The factor that while at UT her name and profile rose nationally, making her a viable candidate for many other positions, is also an indication of how academics and institutions outside of UT, viewed her in a very positive vein. Some may not be willing to admit this, but it will be really hard to replace her, not just the skills and approach to the job, but during these very challenging times in higher ed and the budget and UTMC issues public knowledge to any candidate. And those at UTMC, in the public and among Cartys group, pleased and even gloating over her leaving (which was not forced, as her choice), it was the BOT who has gone public with need to address UTMC as they ultimately have the fiduciary responsibility to the State and taxplayers. There is no other solution to UTMC losses and resulting financial impacts to UT than to cut UTMC lose or find a willing partner to manage. And waiting until a new President arrives in 2021 is also not an option as it would be financially irresponsible for the Board to allow another year of deficits at UTMC, whatever path is taken it is going to happen soon and fast, unless state or other parties hand over $150m+ to balance UTMC books.

Who could possibly be in position to do that other than Bjorkman? Seems kind of fast tracked for a couple years and not sure that college has thrived but just named interim in Jan to Academic Affairs.

I'm thinking she's on the shortlist along with Chris Cooper, Bill Ayers, and John Barrett (who is still a faculty in the College of Law.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
There are WAY too many provosts. Pres only has 15 cabinent members or so to run an entire country. University needs like three. Combine State with Spies. One Provost for that. One for the Interior, need to keep the toilets working, people getting paid. One for research. Students don't need a frickin provost, let alone about 3-4 of them with different window dressing names. One for revenue generating sports and research. Wait, already have that one. One for revenue generating sports. One for non-revenue generating sports and ok fine, that one doubles up for students. Someone count those. That's all that's needed. MAYBE one for parking. A Provost of Parking. PP. Then everyone is happy.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
Its either going to be current Provost (appointed in January), the current CFO or the current VP Research
Anyone else would be complete surprise, not qualified and a bad choice - in my view
There is only one Provost, plus 10 Vice Presidents, and 14 Deans. Under the Provost there are 9 Vice Provost and several support staff.
With budget cuts I suspect you will see a reduction in VPs (1-2 less?), Vice Provosts (2 less?) and support staff (2-3 less?), I don't think we will see fewer colleges or Deans as a reduction already occurred previously soon after Gaber arrived. Of course a year from now with a new President, he/she could reorganize everything.

Yep, although with the University just announcing an adjustment of their initial loss estimate of $41M now moving out to $56M...I'm going to guess more high level admins are going to have to take the axe. Especially of they cannot dump UTMC off of their books and build up their cash reserves a bit in the process.

RE: Gaber Leaving UT
$14m deficit in FY20 (added costs/reduction in revenues) from COVID-19, those need to be addressed between now and June 30th, then for FY21 planning there is a $36m shortfall; those are for UT general operating budget, NOT related to UTMC finances and deficits.
