At Will there be a football season?

I am curious what the group thinks about the possibility of college football being canceled in 2020. Right now I would guess that there will be no college football this year.

What happens if schools decide to keep their campuses closed this fall? No students on campus would mean no athletes on campus - and no sports. Can you imagine the national conversation if universities close their doors for social distancing, but allow exceptions for sports?

What if schools delay opening their campuses until late August or September - that would preclude teams having a proper training camp. You can't send unprepared/out of shape kids out to play a contact sport like football.

What happens if multiple teams in a conference decide to close their campus, but others stay open? If half the Big 10 schools stay closed, do those teams forfeit those games?

Are colleges really going to allow their teams to fly/travel all over the country in the middle of next flu season when the corona is likely to have a second run?

I have seen polls that show a huge percentage of fans say they're not comfortable going to sporting events until there is a vaccine for the corona, which is unlikely to happen so quickly. Would games happen in empty stadia? That would be awful.

Right now I just cannot see how college football happens this fall. Curious to hear the collective wisdom of the Parliament though.

RE: Will there be a football season?
I think almost all universities will be open in the fall. Oregon came out today and said they plan on opening for the fall. OU, OSU, Missouri already said they will open in the fall. The exception might be a few liberal arts schools in the northeast. Athletics departments won’t exist if football is cancelled for the year and I think all P5 schools will be strongly pressured to open. Lawsuits will fly if campuses are closed next year too and we all know university admins love their $$$.

In general they’re going to keep performing larger antibody studies that prove the mortality rate is significantly lower than previously thought. Football players and university age students in general are at a near 0 risk of death from COVID-19. Life must continue.

I don't think our fans would be a problem. We could take our normal crowds and space them out with no problem.

The problem is the players. Hard for a D-line to rush and be blocked by an O-lone without contact. Again and again. Hard to tackle without contact. True for games and practices. Its a contact sport.

Unless we get a big handle on it by August, there will be no football season this year. My guess: No football.

For 18-22 year old healthy individuals playing football is much more dangerous than COVID-19.

I actually think it's more likely than not that we'll have a college football season. Having said that, it may very well be without fans in the stands. Let's not forget that a second wave is expected to come by October. Also, the hard core Rice fan base is getting on in age, with a large number in the vulnerable category.

If the players could be expected to be quarantined the entire time, I could see having a season. The fact is that young, healthy people were/are expected to abide by social distancing just as much as anybody else less for their own protection than to prevent them being vectors of spread to more vulnerable people. It doesn't make sense to have 50 West Virginians from Marshall come in close contact with 50 of our Houstonians in a football game and then send all 100 of them back to classes on Monday taught by professors who may be in risky age brackets or have small children at home or to dorms with classmates in very close proximity to each other. In a second-wave COVID world, the NFL could have a season if the players maintain the professionalism needed to quarantine, but I don't see a way to make it work with college football. There's no way every college football player is going to be quarantined from September to December. It's going to wind up spreading the virus.

Wouldn't that be pretty close to normal for Rice, with or without CV-19?

RE: Will there be a football season?
There's already been a unanimous statement by the 10 FBS conferences that there won't be football unless students are back on campus.

With that said, I think universities will do everything possible including starting late (Oct. 1?) to avoid having to be online-only for the fall. It was one thing to pull the plug in the spring, when at least freshmen had 2/3 of the year under their belt, but fall is a different animal.

So I think there will be a season, but it may start late, finish late, and either lack fans in the stands or only allow reduced capacities with distancing measures.

Well we’ve had college football season for every flu season and somehow it’s worked out just fine. Why would it matter if professors have young children? Children have a near 0% chance of being harmed by the virus (unlike H1N1 that impacted younger healthy people and killed 150k-575k worldwide in 2009). This is similar to most flu related deaths were the elderly or other at risk groups are impacted. The professor can stay 6 ft away from students and wash their hands like everyone else is supposed to. You think everyone in the grocery store where the professor shops is disease free? Or the restaurants that are opening on May 1st?

21% of people tested in NYC already have antibodies for COVID-19. I’d expect by fall that will be quite a bit higher once we all get back to work this summer. The economic impacts from coronavirus are going to kill more people than the disease itself.

If I had to put money down, I’d say either a season starting in Jan/Feb that plays straight through April/May or a season that starts in the fall like normal but gets stopped and then restarted at some point in the academic year.

If testing capabilities improve, players could be tested before every game

Guess: abbreviated season this year

RE: Will there be a football season?
Unless we see a spike in cases prior to the fall, I think football will be played.

I could see the season getting cut short if cases either spike in the fall/winter or there ends up being player-to-player transmission.

While the mortality rate looks to be lower than initially thought, the long asymptomatic period and rate of hospitalization for those who are infected, make this a virus that still needs to be taken seriously (for example, when was the last time the seasonal flu overwhelmed a country’s hospital system [Italy] or took over whole floors/hospitals here?).

Not convinced that all, or even most, universities will have on-campus classes start at their normal times in the fall.

It’s only came close to overwhelming hospitals in areas with extremely dense population (Wuhan, NYC) or very old populations where they didn’t know it was spreading for weeks (Italy). Talk to ICU doctors in places like Houston where the hospitals are more empty than they would normally be. A lot of the space was due to cancelling elected procedures but the system was never close to being overwhelmed. So yes it’s worse than the flu in terms of required hospitalizations but not that much worse. It definitely doesn’t impact college age students in any meaningful way. Plus while distancing helps a complete lockdown similar to what we’re going through now hasn’t proven to be significantly more effective than Sweden. I guess people forget H1N1 in 2009? It killed more people globally than COVID-19 so far but instead of killing people with existing conditions it was more likely to kill children. Universities and schools were open in 09...

On the other hand we have unemployment at Great Depression levels now thanks to our reaction to COVID-19. The president thinks that will snap right back to normal but I highly doubt it. This is a unique situation though so who knows. Contrary to proponents of MMT I also don’t think Powell can just print money forever...

RE: Will there be a football season?
Unless the public/government/liability attitude shifts towards this is going to be a multi-year period that we are dealing with a virus and we all need to assume personal responsibility, versus everyone stay at home until there is a miracle cure I can't see how it would be worth having a season for the colleges.

You could play, but the gates and revenue from in game sales would be down significantly with 20,000 people at big games versus 70,000 people. Not to mention which people are you going to let in? Students pay juicy athletic fees, do they get rights over big money alums? Lawsuit. And, the reality is that those other 50,000+ people will just be swarming like bees over each other in the parking lot and are unlikely to stay home without a significant show of police force on college campus venues, and thanks TV for whipping everyone into a frenzy. Lawsuits are waiting to happen everywhere just so you can have not as large a massive athletic budget shortfall. A lawsuit will also happen if you make football players play until April and then start again in August for the next season.

The NFL is better equipped and is probably gearing up to manage these situations right now. They may play. But I can't see it happening in college until all parties decide to accept risks which at least today doesn't seem plausible.

Unless we come up with a viable cure and/or vaccine before then, it's going to be tough.

So we are going to stay isolated for another 18 months? Please back this decision up with some data. By the time we have a vaccine people will have “socially distanced” for 2 years if you follow that plan. That’s like wasting away something over 10% of your expected remaining life if you’re over 60 because you’re afraid of something with a much lower likelihood of death. If you’re under 60 it’s still wasting significant time when the virus poses almost 0 risk to you.

I think the season may have some adjustments to what we're used to but it will be played in some capacity or another. If no games are played anywhere, I think that college athletics as we know it now will never be quite the same (probably we'll have a semi-pro division in football although we basically already have that without the title I suppose). And I also predict that Rice will be D3 in sports if there are no athletic contests in 2020-21 anywhere (if we don't have football, let's be honest in saying that the other sports won't happen either).

Data that "it's going to be tough"? What would constitute data for such an assertion? If anything it's an opinion.
