RE: OT: 2020 NFL Draft
Positions aside, I don't understand how guys from Lenoir Rhyne and Washburn University can get drafted but Warren and Wright do not.
I mean, it's not like Warren and Wright weren't on the field proving that the could play at the highest level of CFB.

I think B Wright has a legitimate chance to make the league. I’m not sure what his speed is but would assume that is his drawback from getting drafted.
Mike Warren I do not see ever making the NFL. Hope I’m wrong. He does have some unique running back characteristics and is a good pass blocker but again speed has to be the main issue. Maybe he could become a one down back at some point.

Some of you are pretty hard on Mike Warren. I think he is one of those guys whose measurable don't translate to what he can do on the field. Dude is a gamer. In the right situation he will thrive in the NFL.

He's a tough guy who's going to outwork his competition. Who knows - maybe Philly falls in love with him.

Was watching a clip of the Cincy-Pitt game and Warren has a lot of Dion Lewis characteristics. Probably not as good of a pass catcher but good enough hands, maybe a little on the short side and not game breaking speed but can get tough yards and is a willing blocker.

Wright's got a chance to stick. He's big and athletic enough to play at that level. However, he has to learn to play with more discipline. He tends to gamble quite a bit, and at the Nfl level they'll exploit that every time. To many good athletes. As thin as the Bengals are at Lb, i'm surprised they didn't bring him in, but he may project as a pass rusher in the Nfl.

OT: 2020 NFL Draft
I really don't think Mike made a bad decision. His best case scenario coming back another year would be to move up in to the 6th or 7th round, which is only marginally better than being an UDFA.
Running backs have remarkably short shelf lives nowadays. Sitting in college for another year and getting your degree might seem appealing to some, but when you consider the amount of money the NFL offers relative to the value of a 1-year scholarship it's a no brainer. Give it hell right now and if everything falls through, one day Mike can come back, finish his degree, and it's not the end of the world. He's already proved himself as a Bearcat legend. Now I hope he follows the example set forth by Mike Boone and finds his way onto a roster.

Let's see 6 - 7th rounds are $ 75-211 signing and contract values are $2,846,000 - 2,710,000
What do free agents get to sign?

No idea. But the ability to choose where you sign garners significant value. For those type of guys, landing in the right situation is the single most important facet of making it to a second contract.

Just read an article that free agents get $5k likely up to a rare $25k.
Salary on practice squad is $8,400 per week of season.
That pales compared to being drafted.
Oh Canada!

RE: OT: 2020 NFL Draft
This article is a little more informative. NFL teams have up to two days to pay an UDFA an amount from thousands of dollars up to $115K. The player is then invited to camp. If he makes the roster the team is then free to negotiate a contract. In the case cited in the article, the player got a $495K contract and was allowed to keep the money he was given following the draft.

If you're assuming that he's cut either way, then yeah getting drafted is better. But if the goal is to make it to a second contract, you need to fine the right fit. These guys are making a lot in a short period of time, but we're not talking about the difference between generational money, here. They need to make a roster for the NFL to be a viable career path.

Drafted doesn't mean you make the team, although you usually hang on to a practice squad job for awhile at least in hopes that you start showing what they thought they had when they drafted you. Similarly being a free agent doesn't prevent you from making the team or getting a practice slot. And free agents don't just pick a team and show up, the team has to want them enough to want to pay them and give them valuable practice time.
My take: Getting drafted late gets you a much nicer bonus by ordinary human standards but relatively small by NFL contract standards. And there's decent money by human standards making the practice squad. But the real money is in making the team (and ideally long enough for a pension) if you aren't in line for an elite contract. And I think the benefit of the doubt for roster spots tends to go to the drafted guy over the free agent if they are close to even in training camp.
So my bottom line is for most it is better to be a late (e.g. maybe 6th or 7th round) draft pick than a free agent. But free agency is probably better for a not insignificant number of guys. It just depends upon the specific situation.
