HB: Big changes at Akron
Zip-squat has come out of our own beloved U about impacts/cuts/changes due to Covid-19 crisis, but some in the MAC are pulling off the wraps.
Here from the HustleBelt is the dire word from Akron ...

NIU is next. Most schools are changing tuition deposit deadline from May 1 to June 1. Does not look good with projected freshmen enrollment drop in the range of 10% to 20%. Who knows what will happen to the other classes and the grad school.

RE: HB: Big changes at Akron
I would just like someone over there to be open about some of this, at least with some kind of update. A ton of fans and alumni are members and "guests" on this board, and based on what little we know (and a whole lot of speculation and conjecture) it sounds like they're going to need some help.

Recent figures I saw from one of the many studies available on-line show student athletic fees raise about $9 million in a $26 million athletic budget.

I just hope Akron can make football work. The stadium is a palace. Their club seats had an indoor all-you-can-eat buffet and are the most affordable luxury seats in the country. I will not miss any NIU games there.

The longer we have our economy shut down and forcing people to lose their businesses and jobs, the bigger chance NIU might not open next year. The state is hemorrhaging from lack of cash. Bad decisions by politicians have left Illionois unprepared. I bet you see at least a 50% drop in incoming freshman and many students not returning. Why would you take on huge student loans while facing a potential depression

"The number of higher education administrators has grown even as students have left. The number of administrators in Illinois’ universities grew by more than 30 percent between 2004 and 2010. The student population, in contrast, grew by just 2.3 percent."

NIU better get their house in order. Great article that hits home. You wonder why so many of our kids are going to school out of state.

RE: HB: Big changes at Akron
Great post, brandxsb. The governors' request for covid-19 "aid" is the same. Our own Gov. P, a well as those in California, New York, etc., are using the crisis to try for federal money not just to deal with that, but to cover up other financial problems.

That's why myself and others on the board are still awaiting some kind of "real" info about how Northern is planning to deal with the situation. Imo, Northern is waiting on the state, and look who they're waiting on ... .

Illinois Policy are the biased people that drove Rauner to try to starve the higher education system. Hypocritcal at best.

Not that I disagree, but, what would a college drop out (or someone who opted out not going) do instead of going to school? Go work the fields in CA? They need workers. No, that's not going to happen.

That is what keeps people from Mexico and other locations coming to the US. To do the jobs no one else wants to do because it is hard work. I guess they can live with mommy and daddy for the next 10 years. (sarcasm, Trump failed to mention he was being sarcastic :-))

What future does someone have? Is it better to be in debt for a long time, or limit your lifetime earning potential? What is the job perspective going to be in 3-5 years anyway. no knows what that looks like.

I just want college sports to start back up. How am I supposed to plan my vacations (1st world problem) if I don't know where NIU is going to play next season. (of course, that is assuming there is a next season) Since I moved to NV late last year, many things have changed.

I feel sorry for kids these days. Things are nothing like they were when we grew up 30+ years ago. But, I can pin point why things have changed so much. I blame the 90's and the educational shift to "everyone is a winner. There are no losers. Everyone gets a ribbon. Just participating is great. "

This country has lost its competitive nature as a whole. The desire to win drives change. Our educational system has failed us. Only one can be a winner. In times of crisis like what we are facing now, the country should be coming together to overcome this crisis. But, leadership (or lack of any) has failed to unite us in this crisis. One of the things that makes this country strong, is the power it has when it is fighting a common cause. Well, that is not happening due to the leadership that was elected. The challenge, is will we ever, in the history of this country, see a leader who can overcome this system that is out of control and not, be on the take.

Kids should go to school, there is nothing else to do anyway. Be smart about what major you choose. Focus on paying your debt back before you get the new car, fancy apartment...... and save, save save. That is not what kids do, only because they are not being trained to save for a rainy day. Well, its pouring outside and they have nothing to buy an umbrella.

OK rant over. Sorry for going on about this crap. Monitor, feel free to delete this if you want. sorry for the rant.

Quote:Some of the athletic budget budget goes towards making payments and repairs to Akron’s InfoCision Stadium, which hosts multiple sports. As of fiscal year 2015, loan payments on the stadium totaled $4.4 million, with 94 percent of the stadium debt apportioned to the athletics budget.

Those of you who want to renovate HS...its a pipe dream. Time to be flexible and look at Bridgeview as a viable alternative if you want NIU football to survive.
