No surprise that Vegas and the NFL continually tell you that the best players play in the SEC. It doesn't mean that every SEC team is better than every team from other conferences but teams like Clemson and OSU get breathers that LSU and Alabama don't. Middle tier SEC teams still have NFL talent

And Clemson and OSU recruit just as good as Bama/LSU; it's just their competition makes it easier to get to the playoff.

I agree. The SEC is the deepest, most competitive league top to bottom. No question in my mind. Look at the players' schools from the first 10 picks last night...

1. LSU
2. Ohio State
3. Ohio State
4. Georgia
5. Alabama
6. Oregon
7. Auburn
8. Clemson
9. Florida
10. Alabama

Six of the first 10 picks were kids from the SEC.

Disagree. The SEC has become more competitive top tier teams while their mid to lower teams have fallen off since 2000s.

This really seems to have become the case in every conference not just the SEC. the SEC just has many more top tier teams.

LSU (5)- Always have the most raw NFL talent for whatever reason IMO and this was championship team
Alabama (4)- NFL factory under Saban
Georgia (2)- Kirby has been recruiting on par or very close to Bama. Need to switch their offensive scheme and they can compete year in and out with Bama.
Auburn (2)- Never will understand how they stay so competitive in the SEC. They seem to find the most underrated kids.
Florida (1)- Usually have more. I’d put them in SEC top 5 programs that have a chance to win title.

Texas A&M- Solid. Watch out

South Carolina (1)- Since Spurrier they have been trash who cares.
Arkansas had some killer teams in 2000s
Mississippi’s seemed to be way more talented in 2000s
Missouri meh
Tennessee meh
Vandy was respectable especially under Penn State’s Franklin. Now trash
Kentucky gon Kentucky

RE: OT: 2020 NFL Draft
I wonder if the Packers GM has talked to Rodgers yet? Doest this set up New England trade for Rodgers?

Quote:The Green Bay Packers made the most surprising move of the 2020 NFL Draft when they selected former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the No. 26 overall pick. Not only did they draft a backup quarterback in the first round, but they also traded up to do so. Naturally, the decision to draft a new signal-caller drew the ire of fans in Green Bay, even though it brought back some memories of exactly what the Packers did when they selected Aaron Rodgers with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Late Thursday night, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst sat down on a conference call with reporters to explain how he thought the first round went and why he was interested in drafting Love.

"Had a good opportunity to take Jordan Love, the quarterback from Utah State," Gutekunst said. "Excited about a player we take and develop at the most important position in football."

Immediately, Gutekunst was asked if he had spoken to Rodgers about this decision to take a quarterback in the first round. He responded by saying that he had not.

"I haven't connected with Aaron yet," Gutekunst said. "He's obviously been through this and he's a pro and I think it's something that's a long-term decision. I think that when you go through kind of the way things went tonight, you weigh the short-term and the long-term and the way the board went, this was just the best decision for the Packers. Obviously Aaron has been around a long time and he knows what we're playing for right now, so that's what's most important right now."

How many years did Rogers sit behind Favre??? I'd say that's just what they're doing here.

This is how they do things. They obviously know what they're doing.

This is the consequence of the current format of the CFP and the creation of the P5 structure in 2013. Basically all the riches belong to Texas, Oklahoma, OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Clemson, Florida State, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M and a few others. Mid to bottom P5 schools get all the best players because they have all the money and can buy the best coaches and build the best facilities. The middle of the road and lower tier P5 schools like Illinois or Georgia Tech- meh, not so much, but at least they get to associate with the rich guys.

with a few rare exceptions, the bengals have historically avoided drafting bearcats. I could never understand that but then again, their draft years have had lots of flops due to Mike Brown not having a general manager to help.

Maybe recently but historically a raw count of Bengal draft picks of Bearcats would be close to the number from Alabama or Notre Dame and much higher than we took from teams like Purdue, Kentucky or Indiana. So I don't think we "avoided" Bearcats; probably actually picked a few more than might be expected to give our drafts some local flavor.

For all of this talk, at least your team didn't trade away an All-Pro corner for a 4th round draft pick then draft a corner the highest one has been picked in the last 23 years.

The Bengals got a great player, but was it the right decision? I heard lots of speculation how they could parlay that first pick into several outstanding players to rebuild a moribund franchise and energize a rapidly declining fan base.

But this is the Bengals. They grabbed the headlines last night by doing the expected. They'll sell some #9 jerseys today and some tickets this off-season. But if they had a strategy, they could have put other pieces in place. If Burrow can't be protected by this offensive line, for his sake, I hope he can stay healthy.

Anything can happen, but I think he gets drafted in the 4th-5th round. He's graded out as one of the top 5 TE's available and is versatile enough to contribute on special teams (even though as someone else mentioned he will likely see a lot of time as an H-Back in the NFL).

Taking Burrows was a big mistake. The Bengals should have selected a new owner with their first pick. Either that, or draft a guy with a backhoe to exhume the current owner's father.

I've gone back and forth on my position on this. For the overall sake of the roster, I would have looked at trades for the pick and fill multiple positions of need both in this draft and next. There are so many holes that need filled.. so many guys that are on the roster that shouldn't be on a playoff caliber roster (they did fill some holes in free agency though.) Will be interesting to track the careers of Joe, Tua, Herbert, and possibly Lawerence next year.

BUT, for the sake of the fanbase they physically couldn't trade the pick. The protest that would have come from the fans that are left and the fans that would've given up if they traded the pick.. you couldn't if you're the Bengals.

Getting an RG3 level haul (Rams received 2012 first-rounder No. 6, 2012 second-round selection No. 39, 2013 first-rounder No. 22, 2014 first-rounder No. 2) for the #1 pick would have done wonders to this roster though.

When you have the league's smallest fanbase you shouldn't do anything to appease the fans. The only thing that will bring in fans is winning.

Typically franchise QB's are so valuable that there's no math that makes sense to trade them. If you think Burrow is that there's really no package that would have been worth it. Plus if the Bengals used those picks the same way they have drafted the last 5 years they would't have improved the roster; just made it younger.

The only reason I may have considered it is because Tua is an elite prospect who slid because of injury; at least equal to Burrow probably better. If you told me I get the better prospect but because of the injury risk I get a bunch of other assets in addition I might have considered that depending on the package.

Time will tell. I find it interesting that the Packers clearly had other needs that may have helped them more to reach a Super Bowl next season whereas a rook QB who is not going to unseat Rodgers stands on the sidelines. The Pack got to the NFC Chip game last season so you figure they're right there on the cusp again this season. This article is more the angle of what crossed my mind with the pick of Jordan Love and Rodgers' situation...

Quote:Did the Packers help solve their eternal problem at inside linebacker with Patrick Queen? Nope. Did they get even a semblance of a number two receiver with Tee Higgins? Nope. Did they draft a replacement for when Ricky Wagner inevitably gets benched with Josh Jones? Nope. No, they shrewdly worked the phones all throughout Thursday night and added a player they objectively won’t want to see on the field for three seasons.

Before anybody even goes there, this is not even close to what happened when the Packers drafted Rodgers with Brett Favre still on the team. Favre had been waffling about retirement for years and had not recently signed a contract extension. Furthermore, while Rodgers’ play has slipped some, it is worth remembering that other than Davante Adams, his receivers stink. Favre’s play had slipped some, and his receivers were among the best in football.

Rodgers last year was working with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator, and awful receiving threats. He was still a top-10 quarterback at worst. The receivers are going to be even worse in 2021 if you can believe it, as Jimmy Graham, as disappointing as he was in Green Bay, moved on.

Rodgers would be completely justified in demanding a trade from the Packers, and seeing how this franchise, under the unsteady stewardship of Mark Murphy, notably a former defensive back in the NFL, will fare.

This also reeks of Gutekunst attempting to have his superstar moment in the NFL. Clearly, Love has enough potential in Green Bay’s eyes to be one of the all-time great quarterbacks, like the one still under contract.

Let’s spell it out for the Packers. Jordan Love, who was traded up for, better be nothing short of the next first-ballot Hall-of-Fame Packers quarterback, or this is yet another example of a franchise wasting away the most gifted quarterback of all time.

One Fan's Opinion

The Packers are an organization that knows you need a great quarterback. And they choose to try to find a new one before the old one retires. Seems smart to me.

And I think the Bengals made a good choice. Now they better load up on offensive linemen to protect their investment at QB. It may cost them on defense for a few years, but it is necessary.

So, if for some reason the 2020 season gets cancelled all together would the Bengals get the #1 pick again next year? Imagine the trade possibilities of teams wanting to move up for Lawrence or Fields!

Obviously I understand the passion many have for specific teams or I probably wouldn't be on this site. And I can understand rooting for my team's conference to do well n the case of the AAC which is fighting for respect and attention (and more importantly, the money that comes with it!).

But I simply don't get the interest and passion many have about following, ranking, bragging and rooting for conferences. I'm not sure if this is what some of you are saying or not, but I don't get what it means to be a "Big Ten" or "SEC" fan or the point of hyping them up?

I think you're right. It's interesting to break down the conferences but really getting behind bragging about conferences is silly. The people who really brag about the SEC is the teams who are being carried by Bama/LSU, those schools brag about themselves. And in reality those schools have a lot more in common with OSU and Clemson than they do with the Mississippi schools.

I do push back on anti-SEC bias guys because the guys who's only interests are results like Vegas and the NFL think theyre a cut above as well. And I believe that 3 star southern player that ends up at SEC school not named Bama/LSU,UGA is a better player on average than 3 star player at B10 school not named OSU.
