I don't know if he has total authority. I think not, but that's for others more experienced in constitutional law than I am (somebody who has been on more than more than one Supreme Court brief, for starters), somebody like Dershowitz. But what I can say is that if he has that authority, he sure as hell doesn't get it from the 10th Amendment.

He is setting up the Democrat governors to take full responsibility for when their states are opened. He can't lose and he knows it, but it takes the angry a little longer to figure things out.

I think he will be able to enforce a number of laws regarding interstate commerce that will force states to allow some economic activities.

Whatever happened, Trump backed completely off bossing the govs around today. Had a totally different attitude.
Then at the end, he couldn't resist taking one last shot at the govs when he left, threatening to come down hard on them if they messed up, lol.
I think somebody probably told him if he tried to direct the states, they would sue him and he would lose in court. They're all going to be on different schedules, anyway.

He has the authority to recind the national state of emergency. Without that gravy train, the governors will be compelled to open up. Why does the left keep falling in the same trap?

RE: Trump: 10th Amendment gives me total authority! Music to the Spin Room ears.
A friend sent me this today, the man who wrote it is a friend of his. It addresses the commerce aspect of all this.
https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/inter...-lockdown/
QUESTION: Can Trump reopen the economy at will?
UT
ANSWER: There is no doubt that Americans have been getting a civics lesson as they turn to Washington for answers to the coronavirus crisis, but discover that their state governors have assumed far more control over what goes on in their daily lives than the constitution allows. It has been State and local authorities making decisions about shutting down businesses and allocating medical equipment to hospitals – not the President. They have merely listened to Bill Gates and the compromised Anthony Fauci whose recommendations are illegal.
This is what the “United States” meant that there was a separation of powers between federal and state. This is the system the founding fathers designed, though it seems anachronistic to many while people like Fauci have been the stooge for Bill Gates claiming this is a deadly disease that warrants we be locked-down as prisoners in our own homes without any legal authority under the Constitution.
It is the Commerce Clause in the United States Constitution (Article I, Section 8, Clause 3) that governs this question. The Commerce Clause states that the United States Congress shall have power:

Ummm. Reality happened. As often does with trump. He just spouts off the moronic idea as soon as it pops into his head and then deals with facts later.

I actually think the Commerce Clause might bail him out if he ever felt the need to use it, since almost all U.S. commerce is across state lines, due to the supply chain.
But it would be a bad PR move if he did and deaths went way up. This is going to be such a jumbled mess I doubt he tries to club anybody. PR too risky before an election.
Smarter to let the decisions fall on the governors.

They are for whatever they can try to use to make Trump look bad. It's quite obvious given how they wanted him to have total power to shut down the country but now don't want him have total power to open up said country. Hypocrisy at its finest.

He's not letting anything. He basically has no power here, and someone with the actual facts must have pounded that into his orange face. Evidenced by is 180 yesterday. Further, the CEO's have even more power and will do what's right to protect their most valued resource, their employees and customers.
