Ahem, yeah, so there it is.

The ACC is actually a soccer power. 12 of the 15 schools in The ACC sponsor soccer. 10 of the 12 teams made the NCAA Soccer Tournament last fall.

Only 5 ACC teams sponsor Men’s Lacrosse.

With that being said I hated to see y’all drop soccer. Cincinnati has some serious soccer supporters.

Well, first, we ARE "g5."
Second, Temple dropped BASEBALL a couple of years back. Would you rather UC cut baseball?

This stinks but it likely won’t be the last of these. Sadly, this is what happens when you live above your means financially to keep up with the Joneses.

There is probably going to be some right sizing across the board for a lot of the G5.

I made the comparison years back to climbing Everest... We are above the "line of death" without supplemental O2. The P conferences have the Oxygen...they can afford to dawdle above the line of death; we are dying from anoxia. It isn't sustainable over the long-haul, we are now shutting off peripheral functions to try and sustain the vitals, but you can only shed so much...

If there isn't a chance for the summit...either you go down to a lower level, or you die up here.

Yeah I am sure it will take a hit, like everyone else’s. When the stock market plunged in 2008 our endowment went from $1.25B down to $990M. It took us a decade to get it back and to the $1.4B it ultimately attained.

Two quotes that make me feel a little better.

We're being viewed as a leader:

" “I think now that Cincinnati just did it, watch the next month,” said another athletic director from an FBS school. “They cleared the way for other people to do it. Cincinnati puts it on a different level. Unfortunately, you’re going to start to see it. When you have to right-size everything, that’s going to become a way out for a lot of these programs.” "

And this wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision caused entirely by the COVID crisis:

"Once Cincinnati honors remaining financial commitments to staff and player scholarships, it’ll save $800,000 per year. The move had been discussed there internally prior, in part because the Big 12, where university officials have long targeted as a potential landing spot, doesn’t offer men’s soccer."

I think the message is if UC is cutting sports, the Akron’s and BGSU’s of the world are farked.

A regional set up for the Olympic makes total sense. UC soccer should be playing a schedule comprised of teams in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. No reason to spend money to send them to Houston or Tampa.

To me, is this an issue of CV19 or was this something inevitable anyways? If its a CV19 issue then at least we are in the same sinking boat with everyone else right? No one wants to drown alone.

Not to get off topic but I am interested in how much CV19 affects college sports in general going into next year. If we go another year without college sports, and the pros figure a way to play isolated games in secure locations, ny the time 21-22 season rolls around people may be less interested in college sports altogether. All those bloated TV deals could be an issue for the networks. Maybe it creates a big bubble burst and everything gets reorganized again?

RE: Men's Soccer is no more.
It was inevitable and won’t be the last. We are spending to compete with P5 schools but do not have the revenue to continue to do it. We are already approaching 45% of our budget subsidized by student fees. No more money coming in so if you want to continue to fund basketball and football you need to tighten the belt elsewhere.

This was absolutely not a Title IX decision, unlike what everyone seems to think. This was the lowest hanging fruit for the AD in the discussions of overall cuts.

Huh? This is silly. EVERYTHING is a title IX decision. The other way to put this... if title IX did not exist, and never existed, would this same decision have been made?

RE: Men's Soccer is no more.
Here is the list of FBS public schools whose athletic departments are subsidized more than UC ** (from highest to lowest):

Central Michigan 75.7%
Buffalo 75.46%
Florida International 73.09%
Ball State 72.5%
Eastern Michigan 71.41%
Texas State 71.35%
Charlotte 70.64%
Kent State 70.54
Akron 70.2%
Miami (Ohio) 69.3%
Western Michigan 67.9%
North Texas 67.75%
Middle Tennessee 67.6%
Air Force 66.6%
Georgia State 64.5%
New Mexico State 64.27%
UTEP 63.5%
Old Dominion 63.31
Toledo 61.83%
San Jose State 61.37%
Appalachian State 61.08%
Western Kentucky 60.82%
Northern Illinois 60.5%
UAB 60.33%
Georgia Southern 60.05%
Ohio 59.54%
UTSA 57.9%
Bowling Green State University 56.82%
Houston 56.54%
Utah State 55.98
South Florida 52.61
Florida Atlantic 51.32
Louisiana-Monroe 50.5%
Louisiana-Lafayette 49.25%
UConn 49.23%
Louisiana Tech 48.16
Marshall 48.07
UC 47.33%

https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/

** For the purpose of this exercise, I only considered the schools in the FBS. This does not even take into account another 20-25 schools without football or who play at the FCS level who take in a larger percentage from subsidies.

If we are in a world of hurt, it would appear the schools in the MAC, CUSA and the SBC are really going to have to make some tough decisions really quick. Its ironic because the MAC has the most geographic proximity of each other. IIRC, a lot of those MAC schools are sponsoring over 20 sports. The days of Ball State having a men's field hockey team may be over.

I think it's clear COVID-19 made the decision easy. It was something that clearly was discussed as an option, something they may have to do and given the shortfalls coming they decided they needed to act now.

RE: Men's Soccer is no more.
Anyone remember what the minimum number of sports programs mandated by the AAC, ACC and B12 are?

Those conference program limits are what you are going to see schools all over right-sizing to.

14. We are currently at 18. Yesterday, the commissioners of the Group of Five sent a letter to the NCAA requesting a waiver on these minimums.

Thank you.

Wow, that is lower than I thought. And if there is a waiver granted I think you could see quite a purge. Not even sure why the MAC bothers.

Not to pick on any sports...just randomly as examples but I’m honestly not sure why UC still fields programs like golf and cross country teams. If those are full scholarships instead of 11 partials and book scholarships like baseball is, you are talking close to 50 annual scholarships and staff to support those in both men’s and women’s.

Yep. Even our crosstown rival is 8M in the hole. Athletics and personnel will be getting cuts early next month.

RE: Men's Soccer is no more.
I will only add, this is not solely a G5 problem. Universities, and athletic departments in particular, have historically increased spending to consume every available dollar from their existing revenue streams. Take 5% of that away--or 25% and there will be reductions. Will network and cable TV pay for a football season that doesn't deliver any content? That puts a bigger hole in the P5 boats than in our dinghy.

There is a distribution of P5 schools just like the one shared above that ranks the subsidies; not all are swimming in cash as Texas or Ohio State are.
