Quote: “in retrospect, I guess if I had known we had only 2 1/2 years to win, I would do some things differently. I thought we had five years to develop a program. We got the roster in place and got to coach them three months.

“I had a bunch of freshmen and sophomores,” he added. “My two juniors were both hurt. If you try to go through the nonconference season and conference with freshmen and sophomores, there will be bumps along the way. They were getting better. If they stay there and stay together, they’ve got a chance (to win next season).

Eh, a lot of that fell on you coach. Players you recruited who otherwise would have been upperclassmen left under your watch.

Jimmy gave C.B. every opportunity to succeed here. He just didn’t have the mid-major experience to understand the obstacles to winning at this level.

I wish him well.

So was the plan to not win until year 5? If so... congrats on the success there CB! Lol

This dude was a complete dope when it came to excuses and his ability to sound like he ever had a plan.

Good riddance.

He seems like a nice guy, and I wish him well. But in reading that article it appears that introspection is not his strong suit.

He was clueless that he didn't have 5 full years to be successful? If my sucessor took the (depleted) same group of guys that were getting blown out under me and made them competitive immediately, I would probably not emphasize how surprised I was that I was let go.

Not only that but he revealed how much time he spent lamenting UNC’s awful season and how hard that must’ve been on poor ‘ol Williams. Then he followed that BS up with jaw jacking about how pissed off Williams was that McGrath got fired.

Lol.

What a joke.

You can’t go winless through the conference on your third year as coach and be surprised you got fired. That’s not how that works. You can’t be surprised when nearly all of your best players transferred or flat out quit.

He’s a nice guy, but seems to lack common sense.

Last thing I’ll say...

He had the opportunity there to praise the team for how they finished the season. Praise Burke and the rest of his coaching staff that took over for finishing out competitively after he was dismissed. None of that and just more BS about him and Williams.

Makes you wonder how he ever got hired in the first place, how could he have possibly been impressive in interviews for the job?

That’s the thing; he was absolutely not our top choice. So who knows how much of his “rising stock” before getting hired had anything to do with his interview.

I wouldn't read much in to that. I mean he might have praised Burke in the taped interview and even personally to Burke. But the article was a Kansas City article focusing on McGrath, his family, and Roy who all have a past to Kansas. The writer was focusing on the local connection. I don't think their readers really care about UNCW or how the team finished.

It would be nice if the Star News and the UNCW beat writer would reach out to him and get an interview in regards to his firing and let him open up and go more in depth on went when wrong. I agree he sounded like a "dope" with the quotes the writer used in the article about his firing. This is something I am sure Alex Riley would have done....

Not to go down this rabbit hole, but I assume Dooley was our first choice, and he used us to get a raise at FGCSU?

Lol.

This is hilarious. Her work is embarrassing for someone that refers to themself as a journalist of professional standard.

Interesting to see if Siddle turns things around if maybe they’ll actually write about the program on occasion outside of asking for fan comments/thoughts on Facebook.

He did at least say this:

"If they stay there and stay together, they’ve got a chance (to win next season)".

To me, that’s not a net positive on him though. Burke rallies those guys and got them into as cohesive a unit as we saw in 2.5 years. Had he not been able to do that, I fully believe we’d be seeing a lot more transfers than the one we’ve seen so far post-season.

Them sticking it out is 100% attributed to the work of Burke, IMO.

I was only responding to your post about him not giving any praise to the players. It wasn't much, but it was a bit of a shout-out to them if they stick together.

Accountability was never his strong suit. At some point in your life you have to man up and take responsibility for things you are directly responsible for!

RE: Newspaper Article on McGrath
The quotes are disappointing. I'm sure that he discussed a 5 year plan with Bass, but 2.5 years in, the direction of the program needed to be headed forward rather than free falling. I'd give Bass credit for pulling the trigger when he did, but it was obvious to anyone paying attention that McGrath had to go. Regardless of how he feels he was treated, he should acknowledged his failure rather than playing victim. He can be proud of the individuals that he brought in while also recognizing that it didn't come together...and then he can analyze the reasons it didn't come together in private.

Can’t be sure who the # 1 was, but I believe Dooley, Pasternak, and if I recall correctly, possibly Caputo at Miami were all ahead of CB in the pecking order.

It certainly doesn’t bode well for his chances of being a successful HC at the D-I level if he couldn’t learn from his mistakes.

He may very well of had enough of being a HC. He can thrive at being an assistant coach. Nothing wrong with that. Many good ACs never become HCs.

"I didn’t know anything was in jeopardy until the day I got let go. It was kind of strange.”

Wow. Complete lack of self awareness. Sounds like a statement from one of his press conferences after many, many losses...."They hit a lot of tough shots".....
