UNCW basketball gains coach, loses Linssen to transfer

By Dan Spears

Posted Apr 6, 2020 at 2:59 PM

The Seahawks’ sophomore big man was third on the team in points scored and rebounds last season.

The UNCW men’s basketball program announced its first assistant coach under Takayo Siddle on Monday, then confirmed that one of its few post players would be leaving the program.

Redshirt sophomore Marten Linssen put his name in the transfer portal Monday, the school confirmed. Jeff Goodman of Stadium first reported the news.

Linssen finished last season at 10.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, both third best on the team. He had an especially strong finish, scoring in double figures in six of his final seven games, including a 16-point, 13-rebound game in February’s home win against College of Charleston.

He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

His exit means the Seahawks have only two true post players on the current roster: 6-foot-6 sophomore forward Imajae Dodd and 6-foot-7 senior forward John Bowen. Fayetteville native Ian Steere -- a 6-foot-9 forward who started at NC State and then transferred to St. John’s -- has recently shared an image on social media of him wearing a UNCW uniform, but the university has made no official statement.

On the bench, Kurt Kanaskie, who spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Air Force, will join Siddle’s coaching staff.

Kanaskie has been a coach for more than four decades, including a seven-year run as head coach at Drake. His previous Division I assistant-coaching stops include Virginia Tech and Penn State.

“We’re honored and excited to have Kurt as a part of our coaching staff,” Siddle said in a press release. “Kurt has a wealth of experience and knowledge as a basketball coach. He’s exceptional on the court, in recruiting and he’s great at building relationships with players.”

This was somewhat predictable. His style doesn't really fit now. That said, we have a gaping hole down low. If we don't get some size quick we are in trouble. One in the fold i'll feel better but reality is we need 2 now.

Regardless of his style, this departure of a big who had two years of eligibility left is a problem. We were already hurting for size and haven’t seen much materialize yet, and now we’re further back.

Hopefully this will be the only transfer, but it seems once one domino falls others aren’t far behind.

Dodd was getting more PT towards the end of the year and his shot blocking and athleticism fit the system Burke put in place and now Siddle. He was brought on when we had a center and PF together. He's not that effective in the post by himself. Leads me to believe Steere may be more likely to get a waiver than we thought. Also gives Siddle two schollys to work with immediately.

Linssen was playing really well at the end of the season under Burke, I just looked at last 5 games he had 19,9,16, 10, 20. Let’s not act like this doesn’t hurt. You banged on CB for not having big guys, we are currently in a similar situation, recognize it could change, but right now, we are hurting.

I don’t think there’s a correlation between our need and Steere’s waiver. The NCAA doesn’t care that we need him.

Y’all are nervous fans. We have a need, but we aren’t “hurting”. The championship game is scheduled for tonight and a Siddle isn’t going to fix this in a month. Let’s not evaluate the hire after 1 month where the country has be on an essential lockdown.

I'm not, We have just been down this road before and this problem didn't get fixed and it killed us. It's a reasonable concern. I recognize it's a different Style, but we also don't currently have a Cacok on this team. KK got away with a lot because Cacok was essentially Dennis Rodman in college.

Lol. We aren't even allowed to actively recruit right now. May or may not hurt depending on who comes on board and we won't know for a while. I'll worry about a problem when it's an actual problem.

Enjoyed watching him play. An old school deadly inside arsenal. Best of luck Marty and I’d be glad if you decided to stay.

Old school for sure. His pivot reminded me of old school McHale

One has to assume that Coach Siddle believes that additional bigs are forthcoming, and that Linssen believes it as well.

This just confirms to me that we are going to uptempo, pressing and while we need big men, we need guys who run the floor extremely well. This was probably a smart move for both sides and I feel confident we will have another big man soon.

Linssen is a good back to the basket player and I'm sure he will have plenty of options in the portal, or I wouldn't be surprised if he's thinking about turning Pro. I bet he has options in Germany as well. However, this gives us flexibility to slot in a big that fits our style. A Grad transfer that might not be as much as an offensive threat as Linnsen but will be able to run the floor and protect them rim would be ideal. The portal is loaded rn, they should be able to find someone.

How loaded is the portal with players that have immediate eligibility? That’s the question. I’m sure we could very well have one or two bigs the following season. We need bigs that are immediately eligible, and best case scenario would still have at least two years of eligibility like what we just lost. That gives players time to gel and improve vs just hoping for a one-off deal.

I know a lot of folks are looking to spin this as a positive, but I’m not buying that lunch meat. We were already hurting for bigs, and now this puts us further in that hole vs if he didn’t go to the portal we’d only need a complimentary big.

This ain’t good, ideal, or easy to fix.
