3/16 Update - Sun Belt cancels all athletics for rest of year
This isn't exactly shocking news, but news nonetheless from the Sun Belt Conference office on what will happen to athletics after March 30.

It's going to be a looooong off-season.

Quote:NEW ORLEANS – The Sun Belt Conference has announced that the league is canceling all organized athletics-related activities, including regular-season competitions, conference championships and practices, through the remainder of the academic year.

This decision was made in consultation with the league's Presidents, Chancellors and Directors of Athletics to address growing concerns surrounding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

All University System of Georgia schools are going to online for the rest of the semester, not just the next two weeks like originally planned. My daughter got an e-mail from UGA that basically said the campus is closed, don't come back unless you get special permission and even that would only be given in rare instances.

Not sure I’m missing it yet, just due to all the other craziness going on. I’m sure in a month when things have become normal, whatever that normal may be, I will begin to miss it. Football season may be the biggest it’s ever been if we go without until then.

Not to be alarmist or anything, but there's still a possibility the impacts of this go into football season. The big question is does the season encounter any delays. We're still not completely sure what will happen with warmer temps quite yet.

There will definitely be impacts as there are currently no organized workouts/practices allowed until further notice. Coaches are going to have to get creative with how they develop offseason programs for all of our players now.

I predict that this blows over quicker than appears. With only a few thousand tests actually performed to confirm who has it many already have had it and fully recovered. About a month ago a virus swept through the area with similar symptoms. Many who thought they had the flu tested negative. It's finally presenting to the less active and the results are not good. All those who had it now are immune and have beaten the virus and are soon to be no longer contagious. What we're seeing now is millions of people walking around perfectly fine but carrying the active virus. Once this wave sort of washes over and the immune system has completely eliminated the virus new cases will decrease. The fact that the virus is sooo contagious makes it much like a fast moving cat 5 hurricane.

I agree with most, if not all of this.

Let another major news event happen and this will fall away.

Given the way viruses work, that’s highly unlikely. Unless this turns out to be a seasonal virus and it suddenly starts to go away in a month, but that would give people time to react.

Most experts agree we’re looking at it peaking in early May and things slowly returning to a at least semi normal state from there.

But, it seems like more and more experts are suggesting that a resurgence will occur next Fall. So what happens to football season?

Depends how much of the population had been infected before then. Even then it would take a lot to postpone football

At some point you have to re-start the world. It's already requiring more action by the fed and congress to keep things from falling apart than it did in 2008. I dont see how we can keep this up for long.

I hope at least we will be able to buy time to get a vaccine or at least increase our capacity for corona hospitalizations. If not you're weighing putting hundreds of thousands at risk versus dire economic consequences for billions (if the US economy goes down, everyone else is going with us).

Here is what I don’t understand. This virus, that is so dangerous it has essential shut the world down, has killed around 7,500 people, worldwide. Yes, to those families, it’s terrible, but isn’t that many people considering how many people that have died from other infectious diseases and none of those shut the place down. Why is this one being reacted to so differently than other viruses??? 01-wingedeagle

Even in Italy, where everything is terrible, at least by media standards, 2,500 people have died. Italy has over 60 million people living there. That means .04% of the population has died due to this virus, and that Is the worse of any country that has virus numbers.

Someone please tell me the reason for all of this fear.

I’d believe it if it were just in America that his over reaction is happening, but it’s global.

CDC says best case 200,000 Americans can die from this and worst case 1.7 Million. That's 1918 Spanish flu type numbers on the upper end. 20,000 Americans die from the regular flu any given year so this one may be a bit worse.

So the CDC says best case 200k dead, in America. So they are saying that number is a definite. Yet only 8,000 total world wide has died so far. There is a big difference in those numbers. Just doesn’t add up to me.

This is going to make for some incredibly fascinating historical research in the future.

The administration scoffed at and ignored the CDC. It was when a UK study projected 2.2 million deaths that suddenly it became something to address.

Seriously we've outsourced customer service and manufacturing. If we aren't going to listen to the CDC let's outsource it to the UK.

Currently 8.3% of the known infected in Italy have died and 11.2% have gotten better. So basically 80% are still sick outcome TBD.

Italy reported 475 deaths on Wednesday. Off the top of my head, I think they had something like 368 deaths the day before. It's been going up everyday. At some point, the death rate will start going down, but I have no idea when that day will come. Everyone says the US is following Italy's pattern, but is a couple of weeks behind. Have the mitigation procedures changed that prediction? I don't have a clue. But the pictures of crowds packed into airports and Florida beaches isn't comforting at this point.
