RE: Is Majerle finally finished?
The only thing NMSU has lacked since Jans has taken over is "dominating" size in the paint. For the most part, NMSU has dominated the WAC with superior coaching, skill, and execution. If Jans can actually sign some P5 caliber 6'9 and 6'10 big men who can impose their will in the paint, NMSU will further widen its gap on the rest of WAC. In the meantime, Jans has done very well at NMSU with undersized (6'7 and 6'8) post players.

I would agree with that. With CSUB leaving, there is not a team in the conference that has been in the NCAA Tournament, with Seattle being the exception. Their last appearance was 1969. So NMSU has a huge advantage in history and experience plus an excellent head coach. Most of the schools in the conference are young D1 programs. That also helps maintain the advantage NMSU has.

GCU is setup to win with the right coach. CBU needs to get through their last two seasons of the D1 transition process before they can fully compete for a title. UVU losing Mark Pope was a big blow, as well as losing Jake Toolson. Pope led BYU to a 24-8 record with a Net ranking of 9 and Toolson was first team All-WCC, after winning the WAC POTY last season. For me, Seattle is an enigma. I just think they should be better than they are.

Seattle University has the second largest basketball budget in the WAC and is located in a talent rich area of the country. I was never impressed with the job Cameron Dollar did while there. However, at the moment, I am also baffled by Jim Hayford's recruiting? Rather than make recruiting inroads in the Northwest, he seems more focused on recruiting overseas. It might workout well for building his program. But in my opinion Seattle U. needs a coach who can recruit the better talent locally.

Ppl in the Seattle area for the majority think Seattle U is still D2. There isn't much marketing either to pump up the schools athletics...

Good hire. Drew’s teams at Valpo played good defense, an area GCU needs to improve in. Like Majerle, Drew is a former NBA player, but he is just a better coach. Drew’s father was a basketball coach and his brother is head coach at Baylor.

No West Coast ties I think Menzies would’ve been a better hire

RE: Is Majerle finally finished?
Bryce Drew is a good coach who took a bad P5 job. It is difficult to win at Vanderbilt. While at Valparaiso he took his teams to post season play all five years he was there; twice to the NCAA Tournament, twice to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), and once to the College Invitational Tournament (CIT). He also had nearly a 72% winning percentage while at Valpo. So, he is a good coach. Now that he is the GCU coach, expect the Lopes to take on more a midwestern tone with their recruiting. I don't think Drew and Jans will necessarily be competing for the same type of recruit.

He basically had a padded record like Menzies playing cupcakes/ conference. Just like Menzies he left for a bigger gig, failed and got fired. I don’t see him as an upgrade to Dan. I expected GCU with some pretty deep pockets to make a splash hire. I see this guy to hold GCU over until they find their right guy.

It took Stallings years to establish his name at Vanderbilt. If you notice the program was on the decline his first four years there before he got it turned around. It is hard to recruit at Vanderbilt because of their academic standards. Stalling became somewhat a coaching legend at Vanderbilt; but it took time. Drew came in this program over his head. There are a lot of factors why jobs are good fits or not. If you noticed, Kevin Stalling completely flopped at Pittsburgh and was fired after two seasons.

A good example is Steve Alford. He was successful at SW Missouri State, flopped at Iowa, probably the best coach ever at New Mexico, and flopped again at UCLA. All indications now are he will consistently have Nevada battling the MWC Championship. Drew might very well succeed at GCU.

No. He is the right guy. You are focused on his last season at Vanderbilt, which was a disaster. He lost his last 20 regular season games that season. He was at Vandy for three seasons and in the first season he made the tournament. In his last season, he lost his star point guard to knee injury early in the season. That player, Darrius Garland, was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft.

At Valpo, he was three-time coach of the year in the Horizon league. He won the regular season title four times in five seasons and got to the NCAA Tournament twice. His record at Valpo was 124-49. His teams were very good defensively, which GCU needs badly. As a player, he was Mr. Indiana in high school basketball, an All-American at Valpo and a first round draft pick in the NBA. He played five seasons in the NBA.

He comes from a basketball coaching family. His father, Homer, won 640 games as a head coach and is in the College Basketball Hall of Fame. His brother, Scott, was Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2020 at Baylor. If you focus on one season at Vanderbilt, you miss everything else. I don't know what happened at Vanderbilt, but it didn't work out for whatever reason. But I don't think he forgot how to coach when he left Valpo. Majerle, on the other hand, did a good job initially at GCU and he recruited some good offensive talent, but his teams did not play defense and they were soft. That will not happen with Bryce Drew coached teams. Hiring Majerle was a risk because he had zero head coaching experience. He was an NBA guy. He might have been a better fit for the NBA. I hope he gets a chance to return to the NBA.
