Favorite Rice Sports Memory
First off, I hope that everyone is safe and healthy.

Since we are going to have plenty of time on our hands, I was thinking it would be a great thing if we all shared our favorite Rice sports memory/ies. Something that we can lift each other up through....

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
It's really random, but one of my favorite memories was sticking it out in 2007, when all the fans had left, to watch Chase and Co. come back against UTEP.

We were down to UTEP by 20 pts, with something like 13 minutes to play, and we ended up winning by 8. Even though we were bad that year, Chase and JD had that magic, and we knew we were never truly out of a game.

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
1. At Rice stadium, jus a little more than 5 years out of graduation, and being part of the crowd when Rice beat the T-Sips in the rain. (football, of course).

2. Being arrested in Lubbock ('84) after some douche bag Rice kicker won Rice's first SWC game in 3 years on a time running out field goal. I think the bourbon helped (aided, in great part, by my sedate personality.)

I have, to this day, blamed that kicker for the event. A persona non grata in my life since then.

(Thanks to modern technology, I have later learned I was only 'detained', as there is zero record of the event in Lubbock police files....)

3. Watching The Dream and The Glide do their magic against a horribly outmatched Rice BB team at Autry

4. being a part of Bill Yeoman's decision to retire after a loss to Rice (again, in the crowd, standing right behind him as he said it to a radio reporter immediately following a loss to the Owls. I remember his on-air comments were 'You know your time is up when you lose to Rice')

5. helping to incite future Oiler Bubba McDowell to flip off the student section, and further dropping his pants and pads to moon them when he got piqued at the car keys and 'come play for us' when the Miami Hurricane and Jimmy Johnson traveled to play at Rice. Johnson stood next to Bubba when he did that, and did more that nothing. He grinned and patted McDowell's shoulder in appreciation of the acts. Hated Johnson with a passion since then. What a scumball. Far and away worse than the #2 scumball in college coaching -- Barry Switzer.

6. Watching the Aggie band screw up when Rice students on the sidelines started blowing whistles. I heard the Aggie Corps band cut short their halftime show because of that. The *only* time that has ever happened.

7a. Attending the law school graduation of a Rice football player whom I tutored as a Athletic department tutee for three years;
7b. Having that same tutee make sure to come to my law school graduation as part of a 'let's seal the deal' on an offered position (I went to law school for the most part as a part time student, so I was not on the traditional 2L summer clerkship program...)

So many good ones, hard to pick a "favorite".

Any time I saw a Teasip or a Cougar ir an Aggie in agony after a loss to us would have to be in the mix.

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
In person...

1. 1973, my freshman year, sitting with a female Aggie friend from high school in the Rice student section, watching Carl Swierc, put the football Owls back on top for good against the Aggies.
2. Freezing my butt off watching the Owls cone back to beat Air Froce in Fort Worth.
3 Freezing my butt off watching the Owls beat Marshall to win the CUSA championship.
4. Watching the baseball Owls beat UH at the Reck to advance to Omaha.
5. Same 2003 season, watching my then 7 year old son sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame solo at the Reck in a game vs. the Aggies and then getting a standing O and lot’s of high fives from the student section, when we had one in Section EE, as he returned to our seats.
6. Owls BB beating UT in the Jungle Gym.
7. Owls’ victory in the Texas Bowl, especially JD TD pass to CC.

From afar ....

1. Owls defeating Stanford in Omaha to win the National Championship. We were on vacation in Hawaii.
2. Owls defeating Texas at Rice Stadium. When I landed in Detroit for a business trip, I called my wife to let her know I had landed and she said “find a television, quick!”

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
1. Rice 20, @ TexasU 17, 1965. The second-to-last time that I thought of Rice as a big-time football power.
2. @ Rice 17, LSU 15, 1966. The last time.
3. @ Rice 19, TexasU 17, 1994. The thought that there might be a resurgence underway.
4. Rice over Stanford to win the National Championship at Omaha in 2003 (on TV in the R Room)
5. Rice over TexasU basketball, 1992.

ETA a couple more:
6. Hambone's FG (with Ruowls as holder) to beat TT in Lubbock
7. @ Rice 18, ECU 17, 2006. Executed the last 30 seconds or so about as well as it can be done. Saw an NFL team (Steelers, I think) in the same situation the following day, and they totally botched it.

2004 WAC men's outdoor track and field championship for the Owls. Amazing accomplishment to win conference outdoors for the first time in 33 years.

I was going to say the same thing as I was there and part of that student section rush onto the field.

Otherwise I’d say Jordan Dodson’s heroics in the Super Regionals Game 1 against A&M in 2007. Walkoff in the 10th is forever plastered in my mind. Was there for that too!

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
LwaI'll order chronologically my favorite non-MOB, non-Intramural Rice Sports memories:

Sept. 21-24, 1966 -- Winnebagos start rolling into the Rice Stadium parking lot on Wednesday night, leading up to my first college/Rice football game -- which was a WIN against LSU, 17-15. So exciting! What a start to my Rice sports experience!!

Jan. 20, 1967 -- It was standing-room-only at Wiess College to see Muhammad Ali speak up-close and fabulous, prior to his Feb. 6 unanimous-decision victory over Ernie Terrell in the Astrodome.

May 1970 -- Watching a continuously playing 16mm film loop of a Fred Hansen pole vault to analyze its kinematics for the final exam of Dale Spence's Kinesiology class.

May 1971 -- I traveled to Notre Dame to watch Rice's talented tennis team play in the NCAA championships. But I also answered an official's plea to spectators for volunteers to call lines. In one match, Jimmy Connors got mad at me for my (correct!! :-) ) call on an opponent's serve.

1971-2 Basketball season -- I broadcast freshmen basketball games for KTRU. In the old Autry Court press balcony (we couldn't call it a press box, could we?) I met Houston's UPI Bureau Chief, Darrell Mack, who would later offer me a job in daily journalism after he moved to become Executive Editor of the Beaumont (Tex.) Enterprise & Journal in mid-1973.

Oct. 2, 2004 -- I was one of only 4,093 fans to see the Owls' potent running attack steamroll over San Jose State to take an amazing 34-7 lead in the 2nd quarter. (We won't discuss the rest of the game, though.)

December 20-23, 2006 -- Everything about the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl ... except the game itself.

2009-11 -- Anthony Rendon! I loved watching him charge and hoover bunts by batters who dared to challenge him. He's the best baseball player I've ever seen play in person (and that includes Roberto Clemente & Mickey Mantle).

Rice - UT basketball 81-82 season. UT came in ranked top 10 (I think they were 3 or 5 when we played them, I forget) with LaSalle Thompson as the big star. We just destroyed them, with Ricky Pierce hitting jump shot after jump shot. UT was overrated, and I think they slipped way down as the season went on, but that was a fantastic game, and the environment was great.

+1.

I’m adding that one to my list.

Watching Lance Berkman launch balls out of everywhere was pretty special as well.

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
I guess I took the word "favorite" too seriously. I thought it meant one above the rest.

In no particular order,

beating Texas in Austin, 1965 and watching the girl who sat in front of me leave the stadium crying.

beating UT in 1994. Watched the game at a teasip friend's house, and the highlight was watching him rolling on the floor moaning "My life is over".

Beating UT in Omaha 12-2, and watching a solid stream of orange leaving the stadiun - in the seventh inning. Fair weather fans.

As a freshman, marching to the stadium chanting "5-4-3-2, beat the hell out of LSU", and then we did.

beating UH 35-7 when we were 19 point underdogs.

Armed Forces Bowl.

Watching Hansen win his gold medal.

The best thing about every competition in every sport while I was at Rice was knowing the guys on the field. Friends, roomies, classmates, collegemates.

I'm surprised that the 2003 national championship is not at the top of everyone's list. There is nothing in Rice sports history that surpasses it -- and I'm pretty ecumenical (probably more so than most) in my Rice sports fanship.

RE: Favorite Rice Sports Memory
Ok-so this is not singular-sorry.

(1) Though I barely remember it, being almost 10-Rice beating TCU to clinch the 1970 bskb SWC champs
(2) Seeing the freshmen bskb team playing with 2 or 3 players having fouled out so many (72 or so)
(3) Walking into the BSKB locker room after a game to get autographs (72 or so)-the world has really changed
(4) The Mob show in 73 vs TAMU and Carl Swierc running back the KO to clinch, then getting caught with the Mob under the owl club and riding a food service truck out of the stadium
(5) The clown game vs Texas in 78, though the outcome was stolen from us by the 10 point play given by the refs to UT
(6) Hearing that we had finally beaten UH in basketball in 1980 (found out listening to KYW in Philadelphia on a transistor radio)
(7) BSKB wins over ranked ND and Arkansas in the mid 80's
(8) SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!!-no more need to be said
(9) The wild pitch win over Baylor in the 2002 baseball regionals.
(10) Watching all of the cougar fans leave Autry court after beating Clyde Drexler in his coaching debut. No-THEY WEREN'T BACK THAT TIME EITHER
(11) 1991 win over #8 Baylor in Waco
(12) 1990 FB vs UH (the before midnight part). Only if Trevor had not gotten hurt. They finished 10-1 in Jenkins first year.
(13) Shellacking of UTAH in 96. May have been the zenith of the Ken Hatfield wishbone offense.
(14) Michael Harris becoming BOTH the all time points and rebounds leader in Rice history in the same game
(15) THE CHAMPIONSHIP celebration at Reckling in 2003
(16) And this may be the best. Buying t-shirts and hats after game 3 in Omaha.

Agree. But I included only in-person experiences, and I never made it to Omaha for any of the Owls' appearances. My list of memorable TV/radio experiences would have been much longer ... and headed by the 2003 NC.

I think I did well to get within one year after all that time *and* all the succeeding bourbon; and without having to reference an almanac. 03-wink
