Kansas should be National Champs
Honestly if the NCAA doesn't hold a tournament, the AP and Coaches Poll should just crown Kansas champs the old-style college football way

It's stupid to not have a champion in 2020. Sure you can put an asterisk next to Kansas, and everyone will know it as the Coronavirus year

Kansas was also #1 in both polls in 2010. 33-2.

They lost in the 2nd Round to Northern Iowa.

The NCAA Tournament doesn’t crown the best team in the country

It crowns the winner of a single elimination tournament which usually takes quite a bit of luck in addition to skill

The NCAA could crown them as the regular season champs for 2020 and that would be fair

Then going forward do we give a title to the regular-season “champions” in the poll at the end of the conference tournaments?

Polls are ways to roughly gauge the best teams in the country and are useful as debate fodder at sports bars and message boards. But the only sport that has doled out titles based on them is football and now they’ve done away with that.

The world isn’t going to end with no national champion declared this season. The tournament cancelled line in the record book will be a stark reminder of these days.

Yes, in fact, in the past 20 years, the pre-tournament AP #1 has won the title only twice, Duke in 2001 and most recently Kentucky in 2012.

Win it on the court or you haven't won it at all.

Does the AP award a basketball trophy for its final poll in the same way that it does for football? (I honestly don’t know.)

There’s no way that the NCAA is going to award anything official, but that doesn’t preclude media organizations from awarding championship trophies.

This season should be treated like the 1994 World Series, which ended in a strike and with no champion. But since the regular season was completed, post-season awards can be given in NCAA basketball and the tournament committee can put together the seedlings based on the play up to the suspension of the season. Post-season awards were given in 1994 in baseball. But there will be no true champion, just like in baseball in 1994.

Virginia was #1 in both polls in 2018 and was the top overall seed in the tournament. 31-2.

They lost in the first round to 16 seed UMBC by 20 points.

so why did you they all play the regular season? you can't crown a champ from the regular season? college football did it that way for DECADES

Was the regular season played on the court?

ya, and maybe Kansas would lose first round this year, but if you've watched the news at all, the tourney has been CANCELLED

so in lieu of no tourney, why not just assess the entire regular season that has been played? The NCAA can just go along with what the AP and Coaches poll say, just like they've done in college football for years

we're talking 1 year people....having a champ vs. a big blank in the records book

We have an entire regular season to measure...it's not like no games have been played. Just goes to show what a farce the regular season in Bball is.

Bingo ^^^

we have a winner. As has been done in college football for YEARS, other entities besides the NCAA can award a national championship

An entire college bball regular season has been played, and no champ?

ffs no

If you have the tournament, you play the tournament

Honestly, what the NCAA needs to do is create a backup plan Scenario B idea. They could have easily played a 16 team tourney, but got scared.

What is beyond stupid IMO is playing an entire regular season and not coming up with a champ

This is why college football > college basketball

college basketball can't function without a tournament...the regular season is a sideshow appetizer

Kansas with an asterisk is better than a blank record IMO

Your response is dumb. There was no way in 1994 that you could declare a champion without the playoffs and a World Series. There is no way you can declare a champion in NCAA basketball without a tournament.

SoCalBobcat made the best parallel. This season is most similar to 1994 MLB.

If they need a tournament winner how about the highest ranked team that won a conference tournament? That'll be number 2 Gonzaga. Compared to Kansas Gonzaga is the only one who played in the postseason. What if Kansas lost in the Big 12 tournament? All Gonzaga had left was the NCAA tournament left while Kansas needed to navigate both a conference and national tournament. There's a reason FBS football went to the BCS and then a playoff. Why use the AP poll? Isn't the NET a NCAA tool for rankings? Wouldn't the NET be a fairer representative aspect then what the AP would vote for?

Except .... college football and basketball have radically different traditions with regards to choosing a champ. Polls are old hat in football, never used in basketball.

Historically, the last AP basketball poll is done before the NCAA tournament. So I assume this means they don't award a trophy, as none of us have ever heard of it, nobody has ever claimed a title on that basis, and would be laughed at if they did.

But, in recent years (maybe the past 20?) the Coaches poll has conducted a final poll after the national championship game. Whether anyone gets a trophy for that, I don't know, and of course the #1 team in that poll has always been the winner of the tournament, even when it has been a massive upset.

Now relatedly, the NABC, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, has since 1991 given out a national title trophy, but this is not based on a vote but goes automatically to the winner of the NCAA tournament:
