RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
Tough 2 weekend spread for Drexel. Major show down Friday night against JMU.

Drexel survived W&M and Elon at home and now heads to JMU and Towson. back to back weekends with arguably the top 4 teams is asking a lot to overcome in my opinion, but will be a good gauge on just how good Drexel is. Both JMU and Drexel are top 50 in the RPI (closing in on both being top 40). W&M continuing to win would be nice (They are 113 currently). Doubt they find a way into the top 100, but it would be nice for the conference.

Kids these days love to play in front of friends and family. What a huge get this would be for UNCW. Would also be a good recruiting tool to have her commit.

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
The WBB team has 4 games left in the season. They finish up the home slate this weekend with Northeastern and Hofstra coming to town. Obviously we need to at least beat Hofstra (0-15).

We especially need to finish up with a W on Senior Day, when we'll say so long to a robust Senior Class (6): Lacey Suggs, GiGi Smith, Ahyiona Vason, Moriah Crisp, Chinyere Bell and Timber Tate.

* Lacey Suggs: Arrived to UNCW as a walk-on and ended up a starter her final 2 seasons with the Seahawks. Has averaged 11.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg and shot .441 over her career.

* GiGi Smith (ODU transfer): Has averaged 14.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 1.5 spg in 2 years with the Seahawks.

* Ahyiona Vason (JUCO from Pensacola St): Electrifying point guard who has put up 15+ points in 4 of the last 6 games for the Hawks, including a career high 23 against Charleston on Sunday.

* Timber Tate: 4-year player who appeared in 101 games, starting 46. Made 141 threes over her career.

* Chinyere Bell (George Mason transfer): 3-year player who averaged 7.4 ppg and 4.6 rpg over her career. Played in 62 games and started 24.

* Moriah Crisp: 4-year player who has appeared in 94 career games, with 40 starts.

Hawks win, 56-43, in a nice send off for the seniors. GiGi Smith finished with 23 points.

We improve to 6-10 in CAA play after the 2-0 weekend.

Updated CAA Standings:

1. JMU: 14-2
Drexel: 14-2
3. W&M: 11-5
4. Towson: 9-7
5. NU: 8-9
6. Elon: 7-9
7. UNCW: 6-10
Charleston: 6-10
Delaware: 6-10
10. Hofstra: 0-17

WBB finishes off the regular season with 2 games on the road against Drexel and Delaware. Those games will be on Thursday (7 PM) and Saturday (1 PM) this week.

A top-6 spot is still possible for the Hawks, but it would likely require us winning both games this weekend.

The WBB CAA Tournament gets started on Wednesday, Mar 11, hosted by Elon.

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
ESPN Bracketology has both JMU and Drexel getting into the NCAA Tournament, both as 12-seeds.

I doubt it happens, but if the CAA does indeed get 2 bids, I think this would be the first time for the league since 2009, when both VCU and Drexel made it.

Drexel is looking for their first tournament bid since 2009.

RE: 2019-2020 W Basketball Thread
The Seahawks (6-10) are in Philly tonight to face Drexel (14-2), gametime at 7 PM. Any hope of avoiding the play-in round 6 days from now rests on pulling off a massive upset tonight.

Note that Elon (7-9) holds the tiebreaker on us for the # 6 spot by virtue of the Phoenix sweeping us...

A 7th-place finish, while not ideal, would be nice, because it would match us up with last-placed and winless Hofstra (0-17). We are tied with 2 other teams: Delaware, who we face on Saturday to wrap up the regular season, and Charleston (split regular season 1-1).

A win over Delaware on Saturday would give us the tiebreaker there, as we would then have swept the Blue Hens in the regular season.

You trailed for only 9:48, but it was the last 9:48. You lost 52-50.

How would a 4 way tie look if UNCW beats Delaware, Charleston wins, and Elon loses?

WBB lost today to Delaware, 61-57.

Much like the Men's team, WBB plays in the first game of the CAA Tournament. Gametime at 2 PM.

# 9 UNCW faces # 8 Charleston, with the winner moving on to play # 1 seed Drexel tomorrow at Noon.

The tournament is hosted by Elon.

Suggs Headlines All-CAA Honors

RICHMOND, Virginia – UNCW senior guard Lacey Suggs has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Suggs headlines a group of three UNCW student-athletes receiving recognition from the CAA as the league announced its awards on Tuesday prior to the start of the CAA Championship. Redshirt senior guard GiGi Smith earned Third-Team All-CAA honors, while senior guard Ahyiona Vason was named to the CAA's All-Defensive Team.

The Seahawks, 9-20 overall and 6-12 in the CAA, begin their quest for the program's first CAA title on Wednesday, Mar. 11, when they face the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. in the opening game of the tournament at Elon University's Schar Center.

Suggs, the fourth UNCW player to receive the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, holds a 3.71 grade point average in Exercise Science, with a double minor in Business and Health. The White Lake, N.C., product has started 28-of-29 games for Coach Karen Barefoot this season and ranks second on the team with a 12.7 scoring average.

After appearing in just three games as a freshman, Suggs has become a starter and team captain for the Seahawks over the last three years. She became the 17th player in school history to score 1,000 career points when she bucketed 18 points against Northeastern on Feb. 28. She enters the CAA Championship with 1,045 career points, the 15th-highest total on the all-time list.

Smith, from Norfolk, Va., earns her second consecutive All-CAA honor after being named to the Second Team last season. The Seahawks' leading scorer with a 14.4 ppg average, Smith has started 24-of-29 games during her final campaign, collecting 21 double-digit scoring efforts.

Smith has scored 20 or more points seven times this season, including a career-high 32 points in an overtime loss to Drexel on Jan. 5. She also posted her first double-double in the regular season finale at Delaware on Saturday, scoring 18 points and grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds.

Smith, who transferred from Old Dominion prior to the 2017-18 season, has racked up 864 points in 59 games at UNCW. She recorded the 1,000th point of her college career on Dec. 19 against Catawba and has scored 1,242 points in 123 career games.

A native of Montgomery, Ala., Vason paces the Seahawks and ranks seventh in the CAA with 54 steals in 28 games this season while ranking third on the team with a 9.6 ppg clip. She recorded a career-high seven steals against William & Mary and added six thefts at Presbyterian on Dec. 4.

In addition, Vason has reached double figures in scoring 14 times this season, including a season-high 23 points against Charleston on Feb. 23 in a 74-50 victory.
