Good DePaul news
https://www.zagsblog.com/2019/10/04/depa...-eligible/

Charlie Moore gets immediate eligibility after transferring from Kansas to come home to Chicago. Could be DePaul's lead scorer this year on a team that might have otherwise been strapped for offense after losing Strus and Cain.

Replacing Max Strus will be a huge challenge. But the Moore kid ... I like it.

Would be great for the Big East if DePaul performs well OOC. This is a big step in the right direction.

Only 7 games in, but this decision is shaping up to be huge so far. Without Moore as their lead guard I just don't see DePaul having near the horses to do what they've done so far, and him, Reed, and Butz are only juniors (although Reed is a possible candidate for an early NBA departure).

The last DePaul team to make the NCAA tourney was the 2003-04 squad and I recall that Blue Demon outfit rather well. DU was still a member of Conference USA (with Marquette, Louisville, Cincinnati and Memphis) and led by Delonte Holland that season.

Fun fact: Holland (now 37) played for 26 different international teams spanning 2004 to 2015.

It is way too early to predict if this DePaul team is NCAA material. But next year's squad could be (given the experience it will have).

It can be disappointing rooting for DePaul and the Cubs ... but doing so has always been humbling and meaningful to me.

RE: Good DePaul news
The current good news for DePaul is that the Blue Demons have a shot (painfully modest though it might be) of getting hot and running the table in the BE tourney to roll to the Big Dance. And I would not have posted such a thought at this point in the season for many, many seasons prior.

So with Saint Patrick's Day looming, my Celtic music thundering and the Blue Demons still with a pulse ... time to drink a beer.

Cheers, lads!

realistically they'd need to go 3-1 with 2 ranked opponents and 2 other road games. And then win 2 games(including a game over 1/2 seed in the QF) in the BET.

Reed has some NBA skills but would be foolish to depart. Now, if there is a new coaching staff for next season, he might want to leave.

Let me modify what you posted, S20. Realistically, DePaul will need a "miracle late-season run." But at least they have that opportunity. That, alone, is "good DePaul news" (if I might use the subject title of this thread.

Is the coaching staff on the hot seat? After having their best season in years I wouldn't expect that to be the case, but I genuinely don't know

You could make the argument that last season was better than this. swept NCAA teams Seton Hall and St John's.

Can't see the coaching staff being in too much trouble right now. Conference slate has been a disappointment, no doubt, but last year and this year have been their two best in a long time, they're reasonably set up for next year, and Leito has two top-100 commits in the 2021 class. Finally starting to see some progress there.

My take is that the coaching staff will back next season. Lots of talent returns and there is now a bit of continuity and stability. Having said that, the recent seven-game losing streak (and it likely would have been eight had Georgetown's O. Yurtseven and MM been at full strength) is not helping Leitao's cause.

I don't follow the program as closely as I did when 1. I worked at Athlon and covered C-USA when DU was a member and 2. I lived in Chicago up until 1993 ... so I would not know. Now, I have read a few reports suggesting there is some grumbling but these have been from "secondary" sources and not the Tribune or Sun Times. So I predict he'll be back (unless DU loses the rest of its games this year, at which point all bets are off).

Now whether the Blue Demons can win 21 games next season and make the tourney ...

I mean, unless you have some big splash hire lined up (like John Beilin, who washed out with the Cavs in under a year) I don't know how DePaul could move on from their current staff this summer.

RE: Good DePaul news
There are some online rumors that JLP will finally step aside this Spring. Unless they already have a new AD lined up (and one with basketball connections), I have hard time envisioning that an incoming AD will want to start a search AFTER the cycle has already taken place. Whomever that could end up being, and who knows if that is true, will likely take next year to begin highlighting candidates for a possible change in 2021.

Any positive momentum that the program built in OOC has been erased with their pitiful play thus far in conference-play. DePaul remains a non-tournament program, and will likely be another CBI team in a few weeks (if it so chooses).

To use "pitiful play" to describe DePaul in BE games this season is being kind. It's a vast understatement, much like using the word "impressive" to describe a young Bill Dazzle's success with the ladies, circa the mid- to late-1990s, when his swashbuckling skills with the lasses were off the charts (not even remotely true but I wanted to type that for some odd reason — perhaps to ease the sting of another DU loss).

You mean to tell me "Bill Dazzle" didn't dazzle the ladies back in the day?!

I think you're being modest... You must've gotten the nickname from somewhere 04-cheers
