Haha. I agree with this. Anthony Grant will be given another shot and this time he’s not going to go to Alabama so I’d expect it might turn out differently. Shaka.... VCU will take him back after Rhodes gets canned.

I’ve said it before but all those coaches owe a lot to Anthony Grant IMO. He’s the best coach they’ve had. He coached a balanced style that will work at any level in college. He just made a terrible decision to go to Bama. He could of picked almost any other SEC school.

Your assertion about Anthony Grant is not backed up by his actual performance anywhere other than VCU. And even at VCU the program really took off AFTER he left. If anything, the evidence appears to suggest that AG's success was bolstered by the foundation that Capel built.

Is this a joke? All those seniors on that final four team were his recruits. Have you heard of Dayton? Pretty good program. This is probably the best team Dayton has ever had.

Sorry I can’t get over this comment...

Grant was at VCU for three years. They finished in 1st place all three times.
Shaka was at VCU for 6 years. They finished in first place....... 0 times.

Shaka and company owe Grant a big chunk of $$$ in my opinion.

This is so true. Capel left Grant a team of relative shorties. One player taller than 6'7". A team that could defend (some would say hack,) and launch 3's. So he invented havoc, unbranded. The billboard in Richmond said " 94 feet both ways". The rest is history.

In fact, I don't believe anyone on here is a huge JJ supporter. This is a forum where we have people making claims about things, and others arguing against those claims. Nobody has ever said that they would give JJ a "lifetime contract". None of us make decisions, and many of us love ODU Basketball. What would the pitchfork folks like us to do??? I am guessing they want us to stop watching, and stop going to games, while they watch and attend so they can complain some more. My questions go out to Razor:

What would you like us to do on this board? What are you doing that we aren't doing (outside of the constant posts that mean nothing to the athletic program)?

I'll take questions that won't get answered for 800, Alex.

What do I win?

If I had an answer that I actually thought would work I’d provide it.

Wood doesn’t give a crap about any of our opinions, the only thing that matters is money.

A letter writing campaign is an exercise in futility.......so maybe a letter writing campaign to our top donors to ask them to press wood for a new leader?

This biggest part of the problem to me is, wood is also a huge part of the problem.

The ability to match up with other centers and at 6'8" & 235lbs, Kalu is undersized to fill that role much of the time. He's reminds me of Kenny Gattison who was a great PF.

Have we played any centers this year that Kalu and Caver have not been able to matchup to? I can't remember any. How many guys have we even gone up against that had a non stiff guy 6-9 or taller? I can't remember a game where the opposing teams big man dominated Kalu due to his size. Can you reference a few?

At 6-8, 235, I'd imaged Kalu is as big or bigger than many of the players he's facing. THis thought that we need a 6-10 guy to matchup with other teams really doesn't make any sense to me.

Is Santos from VCU undersized? Osaghae? Muhammed? Williams? Heck, Carver is out rebounding the conference and he's 6-4 in heels.

I've asked this several times and no one has provided an answer to how other teams have larger players that dominate us down low.

First box score I checked... Illinois is an example of a team we played with a true center. (7'0" 290 lbs). Kalu had 0 points, 0 rebounds, and 5 fouls in 6 minutes. Carver had 0 points, 2 rebounds (0 offensive) and 4 fouls in 20 minutes.

There you go. There is 1 good one. Kofi is good. 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Ha ha the best team we played dominated our weak interior players and there is the best response you could muster?

Hilarious

Grant is a players coach! When they are playing good you see him high fiving the players, hugging, chest bumping, etc. But when they make a mistake you don't see him run out to the middle of the court to chastise a player in front of everybody. I'm sure he has some choice words for them during the timeout but not where it is noticeable. Players respect that from a coach. JJ doesn't get respect from his players, instead they try to stay as far away from him as they can when on the bench. Plus Grant recruits better players than JJ and doesn't have to get as frustrated. He also has a system the players like to play and recruits players that are comfortable with it.

so you're saying 19-21 yr old kids don't mind being singled out in front of the world and berated like they were a piece of crap! That the only reason they walk right by JJ on the sidelines while he is going off on them is because they don't have anything to say to him and choose to sit at the end of the bench as far from JJ as possible because those seats are more comfortable. The ones that have stayed are either not in his doghouse or afraid not to make a scene. The ones that have left just couldn't take any more and knew JJ wasn't going to change his mind on their abilities to play his style of ball. Why did he recruit them in the first place?

This is the silliest thing I have read in awhile. Coaches yell at their players. No one get upset when Nikki yells at. the women. No one got upset when Blaine yelled at his players. Al coaches get pissed off at this players, especially when they repeatedly make poor choices on the floor.

Getting yelled at doesn't mean you are being treated like crap. And yes, I'm unequivocally saying that the large majority of players love playing for JJ. Im not the only one saying this.....because its true.

You are also completely wrong about players leaving because they couldn't play for JJ. You're talking about things you obviously don't know anything about. Maybe you could argue that a couple of them did (it was expressed that they wanted more playing time), but the ones that have left in the past 2-3 years (not Hueitt) have been because they got in trouble off the court. Talley, Douglass, and 3 others left the school with no choice (Jones had nothing to do with it). Porter had aspirations of tournament success.

There are plenty of things to criticize Jones about but I know you want the kids to be upset that Jones yells at them, but it really isn't reality. I know you want to believe kids left because Jones yells at them but it isn't reality. I know you want them to be embarrassed and their families to be embarrassed but it isn't reality. Just because you want to the kids to feel that way doesn't mean the kids feel that way.

As has been noted several times on here, this is 100% false. I know you want to believe kids don't like JJ because he screams, but its not backed up by reality.

so you're saying 19-21 yr old kids don't mind being singled out in front of the world and berated like they were a piece of crap!

Getting yelled at doesn't mean you are being treated like crap. And yes, I'm unequivocally saying that the large majority of players love playing for JJ. Im not the only one saying this.....because its true.

You are also completely wrong about players leaving because they couldn't play for JJ. You're talking about things you obviously don't know anything about. Maybe you could argue that a couple of them did (it was expressed that they wanted more playing time), but the ones that have left in the past 2-3 years (not Hueitt) have been because they got in trouble off the court. I don't have a problem with coaches yelling at players!!! It's how they do it that bothers me. Don't run out to the middle of the court as the player is walking off and grab him and get in his face waving your arms like a madman in front of everybody. That is what bothers me. Allow him to get to the sidelines with the rest of the team where it isn't as noticeable before going off on him. At least give him that much respect. If you can't understand that, then I just don't think you will ever understand where I am coming from.

You have every right to not like it . Doesn't mean the players or other fans have to care. You sound like you want the players to be upset about it because you are.

Can we all agree that neither of your opinions are going to change on the matter of JJs yelling?

Let's move back to the subject of the future of ODU basketball.

Not gonna comment on the first sentence. But the second is simultaneously true and false.

Agreed - anyone who believes the next four years are going to go according to “plan” doesn’t understand life. Nothing goes according to “plan” in life over a four year span. I’d bet dollars to donuts a lot will change between now and then.
