That's an exceptional mindset.

This isn't about media exposure, and if it was, both sports are poor investments. $Millions and a new stadium for a 30 second highlight clip on low ratings Sportcenter every couple of years? A handful of home games that are miserable if it isnt dry and the temperature is outside of 50-75? A sport that left wing academia and media are determined to get banned? That is supposed to make football a priority.

Oh, I was wrong on my recollection. Football brings in more revenue dollars (not media dollars) than the next THIRTY-FIVE sports including basketball.

That's because it costs more than the next 35 sports. If football made so much money, why can't we afford competitive basketball?

Actually, based on 2016 (the last year I can find numbers for ODU), that isn't accurate. The total of expenditures for all other sports exceeds football expenditures by roughly $7MM. Additionally, football is less in the red than basketball at ODU when taken as a percentage of revenue generated by each sport (doesn't include student fees or media rights which are credited to the dept as a whole).

ETA: This would be for the 2015-16 FY.

The above chart would be more relevant and predictive for ODU if it were G5 only

And if they had expenses. Revenue in and of itself is meaningless. All this tells me is Alabama, Clemson, and LSU football bring in more money than Duke, Kansas, and Gonzaga basketball. Fact is G5 football is getting bled dry. I remember several years back we were one of only 2 or 3 G5 football programs that made money. That was when we sold out every game and didn't have the expense of a new stadium. Can't imagine that is still the case.

So what exactly are you advocating? It's not like FCS is any cheaper. Otherwise why would JMU be spending more than us?

And getting rid of football would be even worse for the program. We'd lose most of the donor base we have now. And we'd push even more fans away.

You know, the football program can lose money and still do wonders for the University. Not many cared about VT until their football team did something. Now kids that I went to school could never get in.

Not comparing us to VT, but having a football team also has a direct positive impact on revenues for the University that are not labeled as football revenue.

I'm not advocating anything. We've already screwed the pooch and there is nothing we can do about it right now. The A10 is full and are no longer interested, the stadium is built, coaching contracts are signed. We keep throwing good money after bad and going deeper and deeper into the Ponzi scheme. And FCS is a lot cheaper. Fewer scholarships, everyone was content with the stadium, Bobby Wilder and his salary was ample to compete at the highest level, and less travel by a large magnitude. Football will get rid of itself eventually. The lawyers and left wing political hacks will make sure of it. The concussion problem isn't the flavor of the day or front and center right now, but it will be back. It is a dying sport and as fewer and fewer play it, there will be fewer and fewer that play it at high levels, meaning the gap between the haves and have nots will continue to grow at an accelerated rate. We are already much, much closer to FCS than we are to P5.

Who is the one getting ripped off for this "Ponzi" scheme? Are the fans not getting the tickets they paid for? Are the players not getting the education they work hard for? Who is getting screwed?

That chart is easy. It's all red...until student fees and media deals are added, them the dept as a whole turned a profit of iirc $600k (2015-2016). But individually every sport lost money.

This is fiction. Foreman was a dump and was going to have to be replaced if we stayed in I-AA or moved to I-A. At least in I-A we have some CFP money to help pay the bills.

I agree.

I once read how athletics are the front porch of a university. It needs to look somewhat respectable as it's the oftentimes the first impression people have of the university.

Giles is correct in his second point as well.
