Here's my priorities:

1. Gettin' paid
2. Gettin' made
3. Gettin' laid

Not always in that order

RE: Where are your priorities?
I go out of my way to watch my main rooting interests (ODU FB & BB, NYG, and the Nats - I used to watch the wizards a lot but the NBA doesn't really do it for me that much anymore). I don't go out of my way to watch other teams in any of those leagues unless its the playoffs. Although I do watch every game during march madness that I can.

And to the bball firsters, could that be different if the FB restart had been in 1970 as opposed to 2010 and had been part of your college experience?

Thanks for posting the question. I will attempt to rank my favorite sports in order, though I will admit I have a hard time with top 2. So I will give them a tie at 1a/1b.

1a. ODU Basketball
1b. Green Bay Packers football
2. Rest of NFL
3. Rest of college basketball (admittedly moreso ACC and BE or top 25 than anything else. For instance I do not watch other CUSA games ever)
4. Premier League soccer

After those, it's a heap of NBA (really only watch during playoffs), college softball, dabble in league of legends (esports) but not so much anymore.

I'm not really into college football at all. I'll watch the title game, that was about it besides ODU home games. I didn't even tune in to ODU away games. Maybe that will change, but I doubt it.

I did not watch one second of XFL and probably will not. It's college basketball time.

To answer your second question, I probably would be more into ODU football if we had it when I first arrived onto campus, as I had always been a football fan (Packers/NFL) growing up. I hadn't seen much of any college basketball before arriving at ODU. ODU hoops made me fall in love with college basketball. Glad it happened that way.

A message for those of you proclaiming you are not an ODU football fan.

From this point forward, can y'all act like it and stay out of the football threads?

Could it be argued that 2018's VT win, last year's games vs VT and UVA (before the wheel's really fell off), and possibly this yr vs Wake (we'll see; that's still a long way off) will do more than a first-round tourney game could wrt national exposure? Nationally broadcast games vs staunch, well-known opponents and all that.

We got a week's worth of national attention for beating VT. And while we got a lot of local coverage for making the tournament. How much national coverage did we get for getting our doors blown off by Purdue after the game was over?

Over the last 8 years, I've heard ODU football mention on ESPN more than ODU basketball. From TH 730 vs New Hampshire, Bowl Game, VT win, Blake LaRussa national player of the week, and the crazy win over WKU.

We just need to win.

I love basketball more than football. But, football has gotten more national exposure in a short amount of time than basketball ever has. It would probably take an elite 8 appearance to equal the exposure from the VT win. Maybe final 4.

I can accept "eh, maybe, maybe not" but "no chance at all" seems like a bit of confirmation bias.

Where are your priorities?
When I got to ODU it was the first year of football. I think football will always be king for me no matter college or pro. Basketball is a close second. That's men or women's. After that I'd have to say baseball and men's soccer are a close 3rd and 4th. Everything else really just falls into how they're doing.

Because the basketball program is a low point under JJ. You have to actually be good for it to matter.

The VT game was a media blip. I guess you can classify it as exposure, but that exposure was perpetuating the idea that ODU is a crappy little program that shocked the world. We were UMBC not VCU. Build the basketball program to its potential, and there is almost a zero percent chance that football can come close to the brand building that basketball can if both realize their potential.

College football is by orders of magnitude a bigger deal than college basketball. The TV ratings and media deals bear it out. Early-season football games are still big deals. Unless it's a 1-vs-2 or blood rivalry kind of game, you're not getting that kind of interest or rating for a regular-season basketball game. Things pick up in March, of course, but football in September is a far bigger deal than basketball in December.

Point being, even if ODU basketball can go further in its sport than football, football, by virtue of being on a larger stage, has the potential for more impact in the sports world as a whole. ESPN gave good coverage to ODU's win against VT, but also that wacky finish against WKU and even Heinicke's zillion-yard game against New Hampshire. Way more than it has for anything ODU basketball has done. And while Sportscenter attention is not the only metric, it's a fair leading indicator, I think.

This is accurate. I've posted similar stats within the past six months. Something along the lines of football provides more media dollars for schools than the next eight sports combined, including basketball. I'll try and make a point to find that again later today to make sure my recollection is correct.

RE: MonarchBlue's crappy little program, what would the natl exposure been had we held on vs UVA and beaten 2 ranked P5s in consecutive years (yeah yeah, wish in one hand and **** in the other)

I do get the point that BB can go farther in a Cinderlla story year that FB can, but as someone else pointed out those are 1/50 or worse.

You could get 100x the media exposure by taking all the money and buying ads... maybe running a quirky commercial at the Super Bowl. This isn't about media exposure, and if it was, both sports are poor investments. $Millions and a new stadium for a 30 second highlight clip on low ratings Sportcenter every couple of years? A handful of home games that are miserable if it isnt dry and the temperature is outside of 50-75? A sport that left wing academia and media are determined to get banned? That is supposed to make football a priority.

Basketball can go further but will never get the exposure of football. Its just a fact.

I'm curious what you think ODU Basketball's potential is? IMO, our ceiling still doesn't get us a lot of national exposure. We have about a 0.001% chance of becoming a Blue Chip program. They're really the only programs that get consistent national attention. VCU, in their prime, wasn't a household name. They were an upset pick once a year. That's not too far off from where ODU is now, IMO. The difference between the average fan thinking about our program once a year vs. not at all in the year isn't significant to me.
