Break out those old man emojis, but to set the record straight "HuskieManiac" it shows you joined in 2019 --- however, it's likely you've been a fan before that.
I know several posters on here -- myself included -- who now fall into your "75%" that don't attend games. BUT we used to. My first season tickets for football and men's basketball were from 1979-80. When the chairback seats were first introduced in Huskie Stadium, I upped my investment and bought four of those simply hoping to re-live the thrill of the Cal Bowl season; I'm confident in saying the number of Huskie events I've attended are 50 times the number you've seen. It says I joined this board in 2010 but I promise you my being a Huskie fan goes way back.
That being said, I also don't disagree with you that "some on here over react" to posts, however, frustration times longevity often lead to over reacting when you see coaches or administrators who have no knowledge of NIU's past and don't seem to care.
Respectfully, my point is don't assume lack of attendance today with a lack of support. Because you can't yet identify with those of us who relished McDougal's team going to the NCAA in Dallas followed by the drought until Molinari used Rosborugh's recruits to get us back; and that was also followed by another gap until Hammel did that. On the women's side, we saw Albright produce a program that made "watch the bracket reveal" parties an annual affair. The success of Waite's volleyball program, the elimination of a men's gymnastics program that produced All-America performers with regularity, a women's national championship in another eliminated program in badminton; the dropping of baseball and the revival with one NCAA prelim round appearance under Spanky McFarland.
There are too many of us whose past contributions suddenly had no value as new rules were implemented for season tickets, parking, etc. We've endured not just losing streaks but consecutive losing seasons, changes of administration that have made us feel less valued. Don't think for a minute that the decision to stop buying season tickets or even attending games didn't come without some painful internal debates. We're still Huskies, but frustrated Huskies.
Don't know enough about costs and logistics when it comes to the ambulance debate, but it did seem like a very long response time considering there is a fire station just off Annie Glidden on Dresser (a mile-plus at best?). Simply glad the Kent State player was doing well enough to return with his teammates.

Not in any way was I trying to disrespect any old timers or people from the past who don’t go any more. I apologize if I came off that way. I’m just trying to say with such low attendance you can only expect the school to put so much money behind a Tuesday night basketball game on espn 3. I have nothing but respect for the older gentleman like you who paved the way and I have respect for all of you on this board. We’re in this together! I just wish more of my generation felt as passionate about huskie sports as me or you guys do.

Do you have respect for me too? If so, you are a fool! 03-wink

Especially you!

Maybe we should just drop the whole EMT thing. It's devolving into a statistical debate over what's justified and what's not, and I for one am not qualified. I agree with an earlier poster who said the time it took to provide response to the injured player became a what-about-me-in-the-seats thing. My posts just reflect an all-around frustration with athletics. Sorry about that.

I don't think the ambulance delay was the fault of Athletics - unless they waited too long to call. I think the delay reflects badly on the City of DeKalb or the ambulance company (if it was private).

Want to know the REAL reason why the ambulance took so long? The ambulance actually got to the Convo in 3 minutes, but the ticket takers would simply not let him in without a ticket. They said that Athletics told them that no one is to be admitted without a ticket. So, they made the poor guy run to the ticket office to buy a ticket...….but, of course, there was no one in the ticket office to sell him a ticket. So, he had to wait 15 minutes until someone showed up.

MD—-I’m trying to decipher what you are saying. I’m reading this as you suggest that we may get into a situation that we don’t score enough and in the tourney that might happen and having Cochran on the court may hinder our scoring ability.

Other than Geno on his drives—there is not a player I like to watch more than Cochran. NOBODY comes close to his hustle and desire. He has kept many possessions alive with offensive rebounds and/or tip backs to keep the possession. Yes, he is a little raw but his energy is so refereshing to see after all these years.

You don’t have to score a lot of points (and we will probably lose a game in the tourney)—-you only have to score one more than the other team.

Remember all the Paugas and Wilsons and Porters of the world where we didn’t neglect the offense???? Where did that get us???

And—perhaps Cochran’s big bump in playing time and the winning streak are a little more than coincidence.

Yup. A point prevented = A point scored

I can't believe the hysteria. 'We need EMTs at the game in case someone has a heart attack and then NIU will get sued if there aren't EMT's there'!!!

Here's a rational question: how often are EMT's needed at a basketball game?

Rarely.

And to extrapolate, where shouldn't there be EMTs? With this rationale, EMTs should be stationed every single place any kind of congregation of people are gathered and if not, then someone apparently needs to be sued.

If a 90 year old man has a heart attack at church, can the church be sued? If a person has a stroke at the park, can the park district be sued? If a person chokes on a piece of candy on the bus, can the bus company be sued?
I was at a sporting event when my mother had a stroke and no EMT was available for over 5 minutes and she past away. So yes you jerk I get pissed about this. I hope one of your family members has a problem and you want help and it is not available. Unbelievable !!

I guess to be a bigger jerk, what would have happened if she was at the supermarket? Or at church? Or at home? Why is it that since it happened at a basketball game different and the level of care expected is different? Why does a sporting event have to provide a level of care to its patrons that no other venue must provide?

I'm here for entertainment. Thanks for providing it. Hysteria rules!
So the burning question - in keeping with this thread - didja sue the sporting event venue? Sporting events should have EMT's on-site just in case an elderly person needs one? That you support higher ticket prices and higher taxes so we can have EMTs on every street corner AND always available puts you in the Bernie Hillary socialist give me all your money camp.
5 minutes response time doesn't seem to ME to be a bad response time.
If your mother died in the 5 minute response time she probably had a massive unsurvivable stroke. FOR perspective a 50 year old acquaintance of mine walked into the hospital last month and died on the admitting room floor of a massive stroke - they didn't bother taking him to the ER.

That you wish ill upon anyone who disagrees with your hysteria - well, that IS you, and about as low as any one can go!

RE: Huskies/Golden Flashes
Some common sense?

Some of us have lost close friends and family in situations similar to what's been discussed here, and it's always emotional and traumatic. The question "why" leads to "if only" and "what if" and then to finger-pointing. We demand answers because in the back of our mind is the selfish-but-natural thought, "what if it was me?" This is especially true for us "gray hairs."

Bottom line is we can go back and forth on this forever ... to have/or not EMT services, response times, etc etc ... and no one will be satisfied. The same is true whether it's an EMT, doctor, police officer, firefighter, etc.: when they are needed, we want them there RIGHT NOW. But unless you plan to go around with a crowd of these folks all the time (and pay for it), they won't be. And even then it may not matter.

Agree to disagree, have some sympathy and compassion, and leave it there. IMO.

FYI - all NIU PD are certified as EMT and are at all games and protocol is for them to handle any crowd emergency. Many have achieved next level training as paramedics.
All of this is available on NIU Public Safety website. Ambulance not at each game due to many factors. Have had more ambulance calls for football practice injuries than for basketball game incidents in last 10 years.

There's no one here who is lacking compassion or sympathy. No one has shown a lack of anything. What has been shown is lashing out at those of us who 1) had nothing to do with what happened and 2) are trying to be pragmatic and realistic about the situation (to have or not to have EMTs at every basketball game) and to consider the cost for something that may never be needed.

That's all that is happening here. I was called a jerk because I don't see the need to have an EMT at a basketball game by a guy who's mom died and he apparently thinks I'm the problem.

That's not a lack of sympathy on my part. I can be sympathetic and not kiss the ass of someone who wants to call me names and point the finger at me for absolutely no reason.

Your general point is well taken, but there are not a thousand people on a bus. Hey, we don't need a stand-by ambulance at football games either ...or anywhere else. Let's cut the cost of all of it and say, well, they can't sue us so who cares?

I reiterate a point from earlier post: the real point is lack of consideration/concern for people, whether fans or participants, vs. more focus on shaving some cost.

This is the point that is being made more and more frequently on a number of threads, and I don't think any serious fan finds it comical.

I repeat:
-- were you happy to learn that the cheerleaders were cut three years ago?
--- were you happy not to get a mesage about the mbb game day/date change until after people raised hell?

People vs. $$, and the $$ are winning. Northern does less and less -- sometimes nothing at all -- to wave the flag and show it gives a damn. THAT'S what this is all about.

Till more than 300 people can show up for a basketball other than 4 games a year don’t expect emt’s at a frickin basketball game.

There are D1 programs who have less than 300 people show up with much less money than NIU. They have 2 EMTs at their games.

This is not only a reasonable expectation; it's industry standard for teams with less fans/lower budget.
