RE: Dantonio out at Mich St
Obviously circumstances are vastly different, but would MSU hire a "place-holder" HC (like Baylor did with Grobe a few years ago) since the opening has come so late? Or maybe give Tressel the season and, if it works out well, they just name him the permanent HC (ala Fickell at OSU, albeit he didn't get the full job)?

I just think it is way too late in the game to hire away another sitting HC, and - with the risk of elevating an inexperienced head coach from a coordinator position - why not just roll the dice with Tressel for the season?

You just had a coach resign in disgrace. Why replace him with another coach that resigned in disgrace? And I mean, if you want to try to run an athletic program with integrity, Baylor's not a good role model.

Mike Tressel is MSU's DC, and a candidate for the position. He is the nephew of Jim, former HC at OSU, whom you are referring to leaving a program "in disgrace".

I also said the circumstances are vastly different with Baylor's, but the timing of both searches are similar. At this point in the game, a school will be hard pressed to find solid candidates looking to make the jump with signing day today and Spring practices around the corner.

My bad. In that case, a little continuity would be a good thing, but only if he didn't have anything to do with the pay-for-play. That being said, I doubt we'll find out the details of what happened before spring games start up, so elevating him should be fairly risk-free.

That's what I get for reading bits and pieces of the thread. Too used to seeing Jimmy's name come up every time there's a vacancy anywhere in the Rust Belt.

I wouldn’t hire Ty Willingham even if he was working for free. Same for Charlie Weiss.

Was someone even after him? Serious question, I never heard of any interest?

I suppose there was enough interest to make him go public.

Yeah I guess, the way I asked probably came out wrong.

Wonder if Michigan St could find another coach that beats Michigan 7 of 8 and goes 7-1 or 8-0 5 of 6 years like Dantonio did. There was a near-decade stretch Dantonio flipped the Big Ten from “Michigan and Ohio St” to “Michigan St and Ohio St”.

As an outsider, I see the B1G as:
A: Ohio St, Michigan. Penn St, Wisconsin
B: Michigan St, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska
C: Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland
Z: Rutgers

Rutgers is actually growing on me.

But I see a big 4, close next 4, then the rest.

RE: Dantonio out at Mich St
Im glad to see Mark Dantonio resign. He has continued down the path of destruction for the Sparty football team by being too dedicated to a staff that was not producing positive outcomes and to players that demonstrated the same type of resume.

There are rumors that Dantonio intentionally delayed this announcement to put MSU in exactly this predicament to force them to use Tressell as the coach. If that proves to be the case i have lost what little respect for him that i have.

Im sure that Harbaugh and Franklin have compounded the dismal few seasons that SPARTY has experienced the past few years.

I hope that MSU will hire someone that is autonomous of influence from Dantonio. I beg that they replace the entire coaching staff other than one person to maintain some type of continuity with the current players.

Fickell seems like an interesting choice. Whether or not he wants to take the helm of a battleship that is sinking and has torpedos in the water heading towards it is an unknown at this point. I did read that he is rumored to be interviewing this weekend. I also understand that could be a move to boost his financial standing at Cincinnati.

Regardless of the outcome and the current State of State, I am a SPARTAN for life.

Go Green!
Go White!
Go State!

That was from 2008-2015.

lets look at the Michigan coaches...
2008-2010 Rich Rodriguez
2011-2014 Brady Hoke

Yeah, that might have a little (lot) bit to do with that. Since Harbaugh came on- Michigan is 3-1 vs MSU.
