Twenty-three players. I shudder to think what would have happened had the portal existed before Coach Clark. What would year two of the McGee era have looked like?

https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co...er-portal/

In a rational world this would be good news for the school.

It would make the move to FCS easier. It would be easier to reach the lower scholarship limits.

And when they fire Edsall (as the school must after six wins in three years, and worse incoming) they can save a lot of money paying the new coach at the FCS level.

But this is UConn and they remain delusional about being a football independent in D-I.

Better than callaway and his running off of 30 guys for hair, jewelry, and untucked shirts.

Sometimes the grass isn't always greener.

Just because you can enter the portal doesn't mean that you should.

What makes UConn delusional? Did these players transfer because UConn football is independent now?

It probably will take several players ending up without a place to transfer before over time some decide to stay where they are at.

No way will everyone who enters it will be able to find an another school.

The transfer portal is active could see a few end up here if there’s interest.

We’ve recruited south Alabama transfers well.

Look at their record over the last ten years. They are paying huge payments on a far off campus stadium but selling very few tickets. They just busted out of the AAC. They are independent, so no leverage in negotiating contracts, no conference TV money, no bowl tie-ins. The program is hugely upside down financially, to the point that they really shouldn't even be trying to play FBS.

UConn isn't Notre Dame.

In 20 years, there will be very little football played in that region of the US anyway. More and more high schools on the coasts are dropping football every year.

Well unlike most schools, football doesn't drive the bus at UConn. They have a very good schedule for next year and I doubt most of those players that went into the portal gets picked up by another program. UConn should have never started a FBS program in the first place but hey, it is what it is.

I'll take a wait and see attitude before I call UConn delusional.

UConn football is delusional if it thinks it can make it as an independent. Generally for that to be successful you need to have pull on a national audience. Notre Dame (Catholics), BYU (Mormons), and Army have this. UConn has no such support outside of their regional area.

UConn basketball is far more legit and better supported, but I notice that the AAC didn't fight to retain them.
