Also ought to "offer" UC, MSU, the Illini, Indiana, Purdue & Syracuse all sports, if we are "offering" to take UConn out of the Big East that they've been pining for.

While we're at it we can offer Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State membership as well.

Excluding ND there are now 6 FBS independents. With all the recent FBS schools going independent (BYU, UMass, Liberty, New Mexico State), it's not as hard for independents to complete schedules as it was once before. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 10 years another school or 2 follows in Liberty's steps and makes the jump from FCS. The more teams that go independent, the easier the schedule making will become. The only really down side is there is no regular season trophy to compete for.

Another issue with independents is bowl access unless you are Army, BYU, or ND. Schools like UCONN/UMASS would need 9/10 wins and there would have to a bowl slot open for them to get selected as an independent.

Liberty earned a bowl as a 7-5 team this year while Toledo a 6-6 team in a conference was left out. They have an agreement with ESPN for bowls. UMass I guess doesn't but they've never needed it.

Where they lose out in recruiting is not having any CFP access at all. ND has some as as part of its relationship with the ACC. If I had to put a wager on it there will be more access for independents with the next TV deal since there are 7 of them now as opposed to 3.

Would a non-Notre Dame indy get the access bowl bid if they were higher ranked than any G5? Not sure how that works.

Adding two eastern schools wouldn't change how often eastern schools see Toledo very much ... because BG would go west, so a locked cross-division game becomes an in-division game ... but it does water it down a touch, because the two cross-division games are across seven schools rather than five.

But it means that we would see ALL Western Division schools at a rate slightly lower than we presently see Toledo, and that would weaken the cohesion of the conference.

Every expansion always comes at that cost, even if there are a handful of people who like playing "conference realignment risk" who willfully ignore that cost when proclaiming the benefits of their most recent fantasy realignment.

Nope, it's the highest ranked Go5 champion. An Indy other than Notre Dame simply has to be ranked highly enough to get one of the at-large spots.

Any move would have to benefit MAC basketball. The MAC may be several steps away from being a multi-bid league, but it's closer to that position in basketball than to any noticable upgrade in status in football. If it doesn't promise to put basketball on an upward trajectory, what't the point even considering it?

You want an upward trajectory for BB. Start putting people in the stands
Every school has marketing dept, use it.
Now How does Conn & Mass help, let me count the ways.
Bigger ft print, recruit students, tues/Wed sch help
12 games to sell, prices have gone up. More bowls

This is as football affiliates, and they are in a fairly dry area for football recruits ... the farthest north the Top Ten FB recruiting states go up the east coast is New Jersey.

Quote: tues/Wed sch help
Adding one game per week with the way byes are normally organized to allow schools to go from playing later in the week to earlier means maybe one more Saturday game in November ... maybe four or five altogether (since there's also byes for UConn and UMass to take into account). One extra Saturday November game every three years is not a big boost.

Quote: 12 games to sell, prices have gone up. More bowls
12 more games to sell and two more mouths to feed ... with no increase in the CFP base payout and UConn and UMass's OOC performance likely reducing the MAC's share of the performance based pool.

And Bowl tie-ins allowed are based on bowl eligibility, neither UConn nor UMass would help the MAC with getting more bowls.

So basically what you are serving there is a bit of a bit nothing burger.

Now to be sure, it would be nice if the MAC departments punched above their weight in marketing their programs, but that is neither here nor there with respect to FB-affiliate relationships with UConn and UMass.

And most critically, UConn is probably not interested, as they would likely prefer their schedules under independence to what their schedules would be in the MAC.

RE: UMASS / UCONN
Agree with both points mentioned, there is little benefit to the MAC to added both UConn and UMass as football only and secondly UConn has almost no interest. If you could get UConn with a scheduling agreement for any unfilled bowls in return, that would be the ticket. It would cost you guys zippo.

Regardless and to everyone's earlier threads on the subject. If the MAC teams wanted to schedule UConn and UMass you could always do so and have. Personally identify with MAC East teams and of course respect Toledo and EMU has generally had very good bb. As stated earlier, wish we could schedule more BB and football together for home and homes with the MAC East and presently only have with Akron. That was a very good game by the ZIPs and fun to watch. Also believe the game was well attended.

Oh, there is one benefit that you'd never acknowledge. Playing teams, which are currently bad, helps make additional MAC teams bowl eligible. Believe that was the case at least once during our brief time with the MAC.

We had UMASS in town back in 2008 to help christen our newly renovated Savage Arena before a sellout crowd...
Very good game, with the Rockets winning by a tip in at the buzzer...
Also, I traveled to Gillette Stadium years back, for a HC game with the Minutemen ... Good times until Bill Belichick’s goons(security) didn’t like our tailgating location...
Definitely would not mind some more scheduling agreements with you guys down the road ... 04-cheers

It's different at McQuirk, but think you'd like it. See you are coming to town 10/02/2021. Generally like to post on the teams board before the game, and post a link to a visitors guide, which I did on the independent UMass board. That is not active and most football is on 247sports. If it's nice and dry for visitors would recommend taking a look at the South Loop since it's grass, but you will miss the students. They come out in mass for the pre-game party in the back of lot 11 and you will see them streaming by you in lot 22. Then in mass leave when the party is over and the game is about to start. Perhaps at tops 1k will come to the game for a half. Ohio had a nice turn out and visited them some, offering some good tequila shots in lot 22.

It would likely net UConn zippo too, as the MAC has rarely had unfilled bowls ... but I wouldn't mind a scheduling agreement where the MAC agrees to incorporate a UConn game in late October if it's part of a H/H FB/BB agreement, any given school gets to use it 2 years in 8, max.

If it included a deal with ESPN to include an eligible UConn as a back-up for the MAC's bowl pool if the MAC does not have enough eligible to fill as a sweetener, I guess that might have some marginal value to UConn without costing the MAC anything.

UConn left the AAC to prioritize their basketball program. I don't see them just giving away H/H basketball games.

As mentioned, UMass and the MAC are free and continue to do so, scheduling with individual teams. The Toledo series has been extended to 4 years. Again, wish there was more BB as well.

Since there is not much BB scheduling, here is the FB.
