Because the expenses associated with flying halfway across the country are indicative of fan support and what you can draw for a home game. 01-wingedeagle

Lame argument. The cost of flying halfway across the country these days is about the same as flying all the way across the country or 400 miles away. Dallas is the corporate headquarters and hub for big airlines like American and Southwest. You can fly here cheap, I'm sure cheaper than you can fly to Chattanooga from Harrisonburg or NoVa. So, airfare cost is a non-starter.

Fans are just tired of pounding the Larry, Darrell, and Darrel Academy of Concrete Finishing and the STFU Sisters of the Poor.

We had 17,000 butts in seats because FCS sucks, not because it costs a fortune to fly to Dallas.

RE: Newest Conference Rumor
I would guess that the reason the attendance wasn't higher had a lot to do with the weather and the reason the ticket demand wasn't higher is largely because it gets tough to swing a trip like that right after Christmas over and over and over. I'm definitely all for a move to FBS, but I don't think there was any lack of excitement for JMU football and the national championship game this year.

I agree that there were other factors involved in the poor showing. The weather definitely sucked. But, there was clearly less interest this year than in years past, in my opinion, not just for us, but also for the smelly Bisons. I have probably made my last trip to Frisco and I live 20 minutes from the stadium.

Curious how many games outside of Frisco you made it to this season?

They 17,866 butts in seats because they couldn’t get any more, it was a sellout.

Thanks Deez for digging up my original post. It was fun reading it 8 years later. It has been so long, I am not even sure of the sources for the information I posted. Schools did go FBS since then but not in the conferences originally thought.

Never in my wildest dreams did I believe we would still be debating FBS this many years later. Always fun to travel back in time though.

Whew .... some of those posters were all over those boards almost 10 years ago! Not sure some of these classics are around these days...

17-18K is the ceiling for FCS champ crowds in Frisco TX. A lot of that is market rates; ticket prices, stadium size, frisco fatigue, etc, but the FCS title game will never draw more than 25K because it's FCS.

My point exactly, and the game was NOT a sellout. I figure 98% according to the number of tickets available on the secondary market the morning of the game.

I guess we should feel fortunate. The DII championship had 3,400 in attendance at a high school stadium.

It was announced as a sellout, if those tickets were on the secondary market they were already SOLD once. People either got stuck in traffic with the weather and/or tried to flip them and got too greedy so they ate them. Many people figured they never had a chance at tickets and didn’t factor it in so they moved on.

And for ticket prices, the Frisco Bowl tickets were less than 1/2 price of what the FCS tickets were and there’s a bowl payout attached to the 2 teams. Shame on them for gouging the fans; if they sold the FCS tickets at the 4/$99 rate they could get many more willing to show up.

For that amazingly low price you could have watched Kent State and Utah State 03-puke03-puke at a half empty stadium.

Unrelated to JMU, but interesting nonetheless...

...Boise State is suing the Mountain West Conference (in which it is a member) over football television revenue control...

Hmmmmm….

Looks like Boise is saying the MWC breeched terms of its negotiated re-entry agreement after Big East (which it planned to join) fell apart.

The reentry agreement is what contained clauses giving them "bonuses" for certain nationally televised games, and some control over home broadcasts.

So really, they aren't suing to get more control, they are suing to enforce terms of an agreement they made with MWC years ago and collect revenue MWC stopped paying.

Don't think this changes the landscape much, unless it results in Boise moving elsewhere. AAC would like to have them, and/or Air Force, and/or BYU join.
