RE: Football 2020 Schedule
I won't quote, but that post is BS. Everyone in the AAC might have "bought it" but how did it help us?! We went 1-8 in those games. It killed Houston's season to the point they folded. While you are looking up previous records, just how many AAC Champions have played two P5 teams with winning records in the year they won the AAC?!!

Regardless of your facts, the AAC is one of only two conferences to have FIVE 10 win teams. Memphis played FIVE 10 win teams this season, we went 4-1. Yes, they can say that previous years, our wins came against non-winning teams, NOT this year! That's why it is the best season Memphis has ever had. 12 wins, but 4 against 10 win teams, beat multiple ranked teams including 4 Playoff ranked wins!

Why people want to degrade our team and conference blows my mind. If we got paid 5x what we make each year, I wonder how much better the team and conference for that matter could be.

The AAC was ranked as the 5th best conference this season, ahead of the ACC. You can quote previous year numbers all you want. Everything points to this season as our team being very good, our conference being very good and next year looks to be the same. Cincy will be good, so will UCF. Houston could rebound. Navy will likely be Navy. Not sure if SMU will slip or not, but Memphis will be right back in that mix.

You’re absolutely correct!! We played a good schedule with good teams and had the best year in school history!

I was thinking the same thing. I'd rather beat St. Mary's School for the Blind and go to the access bowl vs losing to Alabama and Clemson and going to the Birmingham Bowl.

Much rather play the top teams and go down fighting than beating cupcake! Doesn’t do anything for the program.

According to some, this year's schedule was filled with cupcakes. You don't think this year did anything for the program?

Just for the record, I am a graduate of Memphis State and have been a game attending fan since Crump Stadium.

I have been happy as a lark with our football program these past few years. So much excitement for a change.

I am friends with some former players and we get a big kick out of bragging that we are now a football school.

My comments are in regards to our weak OOC football and basketball scheduling philosophies over the past several years. I am a proponent of stronger OOC games and don't mind saying so. That has zip to do with degrading our team.

As for our conference, it is what it is. I'm glad we had such good results in the overall conference this past season. I hope we can sustain that.

I also despise UT, but I have no qualms about giving their conference props for being strong.

In CUSA and the first couple of years of the AAC you could argue about the benefits of scheduling tougher OOC. Now you really can't. IF there was a spot up for grabs in a NY6 bowl and another in the next 4 highest ranked bowl games, our entire philosophy changes.

With one spot, you can't really afford to play a top 10 team OOC, especially on the road, the way that Cincinnati did. If you lose that game and one more you will lose the bid to a 1 loss AAC team, and even possibly a 1 loss Boise team that doesn't play anyone, or an undefeated Appalachian State type.

With two spots available then you absolutely go for it and play a top 5-10 P5 team if you can get it scheduled. Win that game early in the season and you are in the playoff conversation until you lose. If you lose that game and one more, you still get to play in a high profile bowl with a high payout.

So with 1 spot available, you play a weak OOC but the conference schedule is tough. There are at least 5-6 teams that will be really good, that can beat anyone on any given day.

Looking at the absolute best case scenario for next season; we beat a couple of top 20 teams in the conference and then go up against an undefeated top 10 UCF or Cincinnati in the season finale.

It probably won't be good enough to make the playoff, but after the AAC Championship game you are going to be in the top 6-8 of the rankings.

Stammers, Most of what you say actually makes a bit of sense.

However, the odds are long for us to continue to make a bowl like the one we just had. And if you don't, the list of AAC affiliated bowls is less than attractive.

In a perfect world, I would wish for us to play a "challenge bowl" early in the season against any top team that would play us. That would offer prestige and big time competition.

Of course, that's a long shot but so is the Cotton Bowl.

Just need a wheeler dealer to set it up!

Not disagreeing with your logic but without looking back to official attendance records, I think we have had a much larger attendance at the FCS game when it is our opening home game (compared to later in the schedule). If so, that would be strong motivation to schedule the FCS as our opening home game if possible.

It's true we have poor historical records against them, but that doesn't mean those teams would destroy us today. Maybe the problem is that I am taking you literally. My personal bias has me believing we would beat those two teams. We might lose to them, but I don't believe current Miss St. and UT are good enough to destroy current Memphis.

our record with them does not agree and our recent record against P5's isn't exactly amazing.

I agree with your point, except I think Ms. State is about to get good.... wouldn't you know, just in time for us to play them next year (2021).

RE: Football 2020 Schedule

Ok, I have to address a couple of points. 1. The odds aren't long for us to make a bowl like we just had. We will be favored to win the West again and go up against Cincy/UCF to win the AAC. The winner of the AAC is lightyear's ahead of the rest of the G5. The list of bowls might be less attractive, but a 1 or 2 loss AAC team usually gets a good bowl, like Memphis or Navy in the Liberty Bowl.
2. The "challenge bowl", I am actually totally in agreement. A game at the first of the year set up by ESPN doesn't hurt you nearly as badly as other games as far as rankings. Not to mention the payday is usually huge. HOWEVER, a loss might derail the season.

in your previous post you talked about our "weak OOC". While I somewhat agree, let's look at the alternative. Houston in 2016 beat Oklahoma and Louisville OOC, both Top 5 ranked teams... and finished 4th in the AAC West. The 2015 Houston team is the last AAC Champ that actually played two P5 teams in a season. 1 was Louisville 8-5 and the other was Vandy 4-8. It sure seems to be a detriment to an AAC team to play multiple P5 teams in one season, at least as far as winning the AAC. ***** I have to admit that UCF scheduled two P5 games in 2017 & 18, but only played one each year due to weather***

Our formula has worked for three straight AAC West titles and this year's AAC Championship. I don't know why we should want to change it so drastically?!
