I'm referring to the order he signed just before the Army vs Navy football game allowing service academy players to go directly to the pros if they can vs mandatory service time between the two.

I have relatives that attended the AF Academy and West Point. At different times over the years they have been allowed to defer while playing a pro sport so its not really a new thing. Maybe it helps a little but the academic side is similar to the Ivy League and that will never change.
I liked Shaver at W&M and could see him winning here very quickly.

Yeah, you're right in the fact that some of those deferments were allowed but they were always on a case by case basis and to my knowledge there were deals made in which members would serve in reserve status or serve at a later date. I'll have to look closer that the EO and see what exactly changed with it, but I know the Navy is already excited about the possibility of getting better in the recruiting world because those athletes dreaming of pro ball will have an easier route. I'm assuming it would apply to all sports, but not sure. If so, it would surely help the service academies in recruiting basketball players. It's common sense. If you have athletes highly driven to play pro ball, and they know it's just a hop skip and a jump from school A, but school B says "yeah, we can try and see if we can waiver it or defer, etc" that student is less likely to choose school B (service academy). If the EO changed that, that could be a great thing for them.
I agree and hope that it continues to evolve in a positive way for the academy schools. AF and Navy were both ranked in football this year and obviously have to do things the right way on and off the field or courts of play. The NCAA should advocate for this but there is not much money in it for them so it would be a very low priority I think. I have been to some academy football games and they are incredible events that any sports fan should put on their list.

Thus winning at Drexel was never going to be a "breeze". Spiker had to install a brand new system too. Bruiser's style was to win rock fights. Spiker likes to play fast on offense. It takes a lot longer to build a team in your vision when you're installing something brand new.

Not to divert your topic, but I agree Drexel isnt easy to recruit towards and is a unique school in itself. That is why there were concerns about Spiker and whether recruiting for a service academy would help recruiting for Drexel or not. Unfortunately we are also constantly comparing him to Bruiser who did have successes in a harder league and was a fantastic recruiter. Defense was always a concern with Spiker's Army squads, and has not seemed to change here either. We all know the importance of defense.

Yes we have improved marginally each year, and that has been discussed. It has been frustratingly slow for the shape the league has been in. Most of our fans would see 9 wins as expected and ho-hum for the talent we do have. Quite a few of us thought top 4 was realistic this season. Our defense and inconsistencies and road woes likely keep us from that. I think 9 wins is still the realistic end point for this squad.

Have not seen any mention of Burke as a HC here but if he were to win some games it might be a consideration ?

I’m certainly rooting for him to do well, and certainly he should be considered if he does so. But I hope we have a very strong list of finalists regardless, with Burke only being an option and not the # 1 choice purely based on getting some W’s here in half a season. Esleeck has an opportunity to up his stock as well.

Lots of interim coaches have done well in a small sample across the college landscape.

IMO, he would need to have a turnaround of epic proportions. McGrath was the head coach, but these guys had input as well. The product we see on the floor, and in recruiting, is the combined effort of the whole staff. We've mentioned how Brownell was a huge factor as an assistant. IMO, this is a failure of the entire staff. Thus the need for a dramatic turnaround to even be considered.

While i agree, we don't know what happened behind closed doors. There is a chance that CB just didn't listen to them. He seemed pretty damn stubborn.

Don't disagree. Thus the need to see a dramatic improvement. If McGrath didn't take any input, and he's gone, Burke and the remaining coaches have the chance to change things in the manner they wanted but were prevented from doing so. If everything pretty much looks the same, then we know they have nothing more to offer than McGrath did.

Finally a legit article from the Star News outside of just regurgitating “social media activity” surrounding the coaching change.

Gets into the history on Rob Burke for any unaware and interested.

Wow. Had no idea the connections he has to Byington, Gannon Baker and UNCW. Seems I pegged him right as an enthusiastic coach who will have a team that reflects his personality.

“He is a big-time competitor,” Hodges said. “He knows the game. If the kids follow his personality, they are going to play hard. He was a grinder and got after it. He knew the game well and has good pedigree as a coach’s son.”

A lot of very coincidental connections to Byington surfacing. With Burke having such close ties to Byington as a former assistant, the connection to former player Gannon Baker and making Burke the interim coach....could this all be a setup to create a smooth transition for Byington to return?

What's the connection to Baker?

If we were able to attract Byington, Andrew Wilson seems like a natural fit as their next coach. I also noted that Jon Cremins is on Byington's staff. He's the nephew of Bobby, but more interesting to me is that he coached at Spartanburg Methodist. I guess that isn't all that interesting, but Burke was there for 6 years as well. Their time didn't overlap, but I'm sure they're is familiarity.

In the summer of 2008, he worked at the Nike National Skills Academy with former Seahawk Ganon Baker.

I had no idea his father was the long time coach at Chowan College, now University. Chowan is now a D2 school in the CIAA.

When UNCW was playing Davidson in November, Burke was busy keeping track of something on a clip board and consulted with McGrath near the end of the most of the time outs. I was impressed he did not get swept up in the swirl of the blow out and ignore his duties.

If you have been to the Georgia Southern campus in Statesboro, returning to Wilmington would be a step up to Byington, even if the Sun Belt is rated above the CAA at this time.

Byington was interested in the Elon job last offseason. Also, the lone UNCW signee picked us over GA Southern. If Byington comes in and Burke is kept on we could see minimal roster turnover.
