Piggybacking off Fighting Muskie's top 12 coaches thread
Ted Roof's prowess as a defensive coach is inversely proportional to the amount of responsibility he has on the entire defense.

Don Treadwell. Took over a MAC champ with almost all key players and a future NFL QB returning, somehow went 8-28 if you count losses his third season after he was fired. He didn't believe in strength training (thought it made players slow), he literally had his players do jumping jacks instead.

Hard to say that when he was 41-49 overall with a Sugar Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.
Charlie Weis was 35-27 at ND.
He started out great, going 9-3 in 2005 and 10-3 in 2006, with Fiesta and Sugar Bowl appearances respectively.
It all went down hill after that, with Weis going 3-9, 7-6 and 6-6 after that.
Yes, but 6-6 at ND is the equivalent of 2-10 at a lot of other programs. A blue blood like the Irish has much higher expectations of their HCs
Asinine. If that's the case then we can add Lou Holtz, Bob Davie, and Brian Kelly to the list because all have had 6 win or worse seasons.
Nobody is trying to say Weis was a great coach, but he was over .500 at Notre Dame, went to two major bowls, and wasn't even the worst Notre Dame coach in the past 50 years.
Kap and I are in total agreement.

Tom Tuberville may have had earlier success, but he sure did stink up Cincinnati. Of course, he was fully retired at the time and devoted most of his time to back-slapping and golf.

That turned out shockingly bad. Cincy stealing a (recently undefeated SEC) coach from a BXII team looked savage at the time.

Charlie Weiss ran circles around Gerry Faust.

Charlie Weiss ran circles around Gerry Faust.
I saw Gerry at the Hammes Bookstore on ND's campus before the Southern Cal game in 2017.
He still hangs around.
He went 30-26-1 at ND from 1981 through 1985.
(Lou Holtz had ND 12-0 and National Champions three years later).

Perfect example of the Peter Principle. Great HS coach promoted to his level of incompetence, to the top job in the country at the time. Gerry and Charlie managed to help drag it down a few notches.

If I made a list I would have to put Doug Barfield on that list.
On one team he had 5 future professional stars and couldn't win:
Running Backs: James Brooks (Bengals), Joe Cribbs (Buffalo)
Full Back: William Andrews (Falcons)
Wide Receiver: Byron Franklin (Buffalo)
Place Kicker: Neil O'Donoghue (Cardinals)
It was the single most waste of talent in all my years of watching Auburn Football!
