Propst was a "volunteer assistant" at UAB. Whatever that means.

Unpaid intern, making inroads trying to get back out there probably.

Nothing that UAB ran resembled the fast paced, spread option that Propst runs. I imagine most of his work was shooting the breeze with his friend Bill Clark.

Propst's situation at Hoover HS was typical of head coaches at major high school programs. They make 2 or three academic teacher's pay (generally 6 figures), meet no regular scheduled classes (only coach their sport), can kick any recalcitrant uncooperative player off the team (which academic teachers can't do) and get "glad handed" by fans at meetings. They also get a pay supplement because they stay late and work more days (which the better academic teachers often do for no additional compensation). When Jeff Powell and I coached the WEHS Academic teams, we had to split one assistant sports coach supplement between us.

Probably looking at the future of "elite" youth sports. The rich wannabe-great players will pay full tuition and fund the scholarships of the real elite athletes. That model is already used in college minor sports today, the full tuition paying walk ons helping to fund scholarships for the real talent. Same for club youth soccer. They create as many open spots as necessary for the affluent full-price paying (and big $ donating) kids so they can offer scholarships to the top players.
The boarding school/athletic academy model has been around for a long time, just not in Alabama. No surprise that the first one would be built around football.

When people start paying $8 admission, $5 parking, $10 program, $15 concessions, & $250 for a 1/4 page advertisement, to watch Mrs Jones teach Geometry, then things will be different.

I think there is already one in the Bham area - Birmingham Sports Academy - that opened a couple of years ago.

That's a post-graduation prep school. I'm talking about high school and younger kids. Not unusual in soccer for kids to go to boarding/soccer school as young as 12. Several of the best soccer talents in this state have left after their 7th and 8th grade years and entered MLS academy programs.
This is what all the specialization/concentration in youth sports is leading to: a Europeanized system, where the best athletes compete in private clubs and public school sports is more akin to recreational/intramural. Ever tightening school budgets are gonna feed into this trend.

That approach is not new. I got the same argument from Paul Finebaum and Bob Gambacurda when they had a nightly sports talk show on WAPI AM. There has been a price for such devotion to entertainment driven decision making. In the fall of 1941 the Navy (later) admitted they had lost track of Japan's High Seas fleet so when the radar operators reported to the Pearl Harbor Combat Information Center that a large mass of planes were approaching from the north, he was told "Don't worry about them -- they are friendly" so they shut down the station to eat breakfast. Then there was the Arizona based FBI agent who expressed to HQ concern about the Saudi nationals who were taking flying lessons but not appeared interested in learning how to take off and land planes. I suppose he got the same equivalent message of "Don't worry about them - they are friendly". There were originally 32 planned Apollo missions but when the USSR pulled out of the "Moon Race" the US cancelled all missions after #17 because it was not "fun/entertaining" any more. Today if the USA wants to send astronauts or supplies to the ISS, they must pay Russia to provide transportation to and from it because we have no vehicle for the job..
There has been a price to pay in lives and national treasure when what is "funner" drives decision making.

Um, War is no fun. Street crime is no fun.
Homelessness is no fun. I could go on and on.
We spend billions dealing with not “funner” issues.
Decisions are made snd we will always have to deal with any consequences of our actions.
I hope we dont have to relearn too much!

It's over before it even began:
Quote:The Rush Propst Era at USA Academy is over before it began.
Propst – introduced as the fledgling private school’s football coach at news conference last month in Prattville – announced today that he won’t be joining the school. He never signed a contract.
