If these sites are up to date then this sorta explains why we can't win CUSA, let alone vs decent FBS teams...because we're recruiting FCS level talent. Here's a tally of the schools that our signees chose USM over:

ULM (5x)
WKU (4x)
South Alabama (4x)
Liberty (4x)
Akron (3x)
Ark State (3x)
New Mexico (3x)
Tenn-Martin (3x)
North Alabama (2x)
Umass (2x)
ULL (2x)
South Florida (2x)
Alcorn State (2x)
Austin Peay (2x)
Nicholls State (2x)
FIU (2x)
Charlotte (2x)
SE Missouri State (2x)
Texas State (2x)
Mississippi Valley State (2x)
FAU
Houston
Indiana
Tennesse
Florida A&M
Morgan State
Alabama A&M
Central Arkansas
Hawaii
Marshall
Troy
UTSA
Central Michigan
East Tennessee State
North Texas
Northern Arizona
Bethune Cookman
Stephen F. Austin
Abilene Christian
Ball State
Indiana State
Jacksonville State
North Dakota
UTEP
Chattanooga

78 total offers...47 from FBS schools (only 3 from P5 schools) and the rest are from FCS/SWAC schools.

He’s Bower 2.0 without the wins. He’s not gonna try to recruit great prospects because he doesn’t think we have a chance. Doesn’t help that drying paint would probably be a better salesman than him.

Its been like this since Fedora left, as I pointed out years ago when it started happening. Then pointed it out with each new coach. Then i pointed out how we need JUCO and transfers. TM finally caught on to that and we go 9-3. Then, wash repeat with this Hopson clown. **** recruits with not enough Juco or transfers....bc thats not the "right way". Well dumb **** shoulda caught on from year one but now after trashing up the program again, he finally wised up this year and got a ton of JUCO guys. Too little too late. Now let's see if he is still too dumb to get P5 transfers.

Why you have just caught on to this after 7 years, idk

I’m surprised we have that many 3-stars, tbh.

The good news is 24/7 now has us 3rd in CUSA, up from 9th at last count. The bad news is that’s also 3rd in CUSA West. Now, I get that UNT has a lot of relatively shiny new toys compared to us and is surrounded by a high school football farm, but getting out-recruited by Louisiana Tech stings.

Just completely block out how many "stars" the kids have by their names and look at their other offers. THAT'S a much clearer indicator of the type of recruit IMO.

His first couple classes, Monken talked a lot about recruiting coachable guys with a great football mentality over just chasing raw athleticism. He stopped saying that by his 3rd class. I always found that interesting.

I would take Monken or Fedora back tomorrow over Hopson especially as it relates to recruiting.

Honestly, I expected a worse recruiting class.

RE: Yesterday's signees "other offers" according to Rivals/247...yikes.
I did a quick look at the 2011 Southern Miss championship team to see what offers various players had who were on that team. I think it gives a good perspective of where we are right now. I wish all the new signees the best. There were players on the 2011 team who received no offers from power conference schools and turned out to be very good, i.e. Austin Davis (walk on), Cordarro Law, and Ronnie Thornton who lead to the team in tackles against Houston in the championship game. I'm sure a few of our signees will turn out to be very good as well. But looking at it from the quality of players overall on the team it's a rather sad situation.

Players on the 2011 team and the offers they received prior to choosing Southern Miss:

Darius Barnes- Ole Miss
Marcal Robinson- Arkansas, Auburn, Louisvile
Kendrick Presley- Ole Miss
Kyrhi Thornton- Arkansas, Clemson, Florida State
Jamie Collins- Auburn
Tracey Lampley- Mississippi State
Deron Wilson- Kansas State, Minnesota, Mississippi State
Jamal Woodyard- Louisville, Mississippi State
Jason Weaver (JC signee)- Arizona, Kansas State, Miami
Kelvin Bolden (JC signee)- Mississippi State
Lamar Holmes (JC signee)- Auburn, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State
Desmond Johnson- Michigan

That's a pretty small sample too, unless you're only talking starters. We competed against plenty of P5 schools for recruits under Fedora.

Agree.

Too variance among 3 stars to take much from that rating.

To be fair, you could do the same thing for the 2012 season and have just as many players with P5 offers. EJ signed the 2nd highest rated player in USM history that season.

I still cringe at hiring an unproven surrogate paw-paw corch b/c he's one of our own simply to sign a supposed one of our own 4/5 'stars' via nepotism certainly generated a 'laundry list of success', ya?.....

yeah buggy....ol' battery boy was that couldn't miss, dual threat athletic stud that couldn't hit the broadside of anything if it was a foot in front of his feces once the gene pool and talent level was equalized...toss in having the I.Q. of an average gang banger combined with the football I.Q. of a squid, and you get this ROI 7 yrs. later....

https://www.baseball-reference.com/regis...ford000ant

yep....the only two 5 star recruits that ever signed at southern miss, are easily the biggest long term investment failures to play at the Rock....

take a look at the current version at FSU and U.....they have more horror stories one would ever NOT want to listen to....

I'll take a 2/3 star with 'under the radar talent ' with a functional brain, humble/ethical background, and athletic savvy any day over an overrated prima-fkn-donna....

today's biggest problem is we don't have the right skipper(s) at the helm.....and it all begins with Bennett's Peter Principle'd apathy and lack of ability.....there's only one solution in that arena.....and we're going to get at least one more year of all that bs....

oh wellzy.....have a merry christmas, happy kwanzaa, and hanukkah.....

And to be fair, that was coming off the most successful season in Usm DI history at 12-2, so it should have been expected and actually much, much better. Remember, EJ didn't want to "chase ghosts". He was a terrible, recruiter and should have been one of the warning signs for his loser supporters that defended him through about the first 9 games.

You think this is bad, wait until year 8 when we are only getting guys that JSU Alcorn State and McNeese offered.

If facilities was the sole motivator for players signing, every one of the players listed above would have signed with one of those teams instead of Southern Miss. All of those teams had facilities that would be considered far superior to what USM had. Even if you went back to the 1970s and 1980s all the above schools would have had superior facilities compared to USM. A quality coach with a vision to bring exciting football to a program, and the enthusiasm to promote that to recruits can do wonders. Obviously Fedora and his staff did something to persuade the players above to cast their lot with Southern Miss. And it appears Hopson doesn't have the vision or energy level to do the same.

To be fair, you could do the same thing for the 2012 season and have just as many players with P5 offers. EJ signed the 2nd highest rated player in USM history that season.

Exactly. The 2012 recruits were no doubt impressed by what happened during the 2012 season. It's a testament to what a lousy coach Ellis Johnson was. By 2014, 9 of the 13 three star or better recruits had left the program. If you go back and watch the first half of the 2012 Nebraska game it looked like Southern Miss from 2011. Lampley ran a kickoff back 100 yards for a TD. New QB Chris Campbell was playing a good game and driving Southern Miss down the field and throwing a TD strike to Sullivan. Then down only 21-14, EJ yanks Campbell out of the game near the end of the 1st half and puts in his favorite Anthony Alford. Even the TV announcers commented on what a bad move that was. The game went downhill from there. The rest of the 0-12 season is history and too painful to recall.

I think it gives a good perspective of where we are right now. I wish all the new signees the best. There were players on the 2011 team who received no offers from power conference schools and turned out to be very good, i.e. Austin Davis (walk on), Cordarro Law, and Ronnie Thornton who lead to the team in tackles against Houston in the championship game. I'm sure a few of our signees will turn out to be very good as well. But looking at it from the quality of players overall on the team it's a rather sad situation.

Players on the 2011 team and the offers they received prior to choosing Southern Miss:

Darius Barnes- Ole Miss
Marcal Robinson- Arkansas, Auburn, Louisvile
Kendrick Presley- Ole Miss
Kyrhi Thornton- Arkansas, Clemson, Florida State
Jamie Collins- Auburn
Tracey Lampley- Mississippi State
Deron Wilson- Kansas State, Minnesota, Mississippi State
Jamal Woodyard- Louisville, Mississippi State
Jason Weaver (JC signee)- Arizona, Kansas State, Miami
Kelvin Bolden (JC signee)- Mississippi State
Lamar Holmes (JC signee)- Auburn, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State
Desmond Johnson- Michigan

Those days are long gone.

The facilities that even lower level P5’s have now are too good. We can’t convince a kid to stay home instead of going to play at Arizona, Minnesota, K-State, etc. when every P5 school has things like an indoor practice facility.

Exactly
