RE: Offens(ive)
Yes, the numbers so far haven't been good on offense. We have struggled to score. Getting Ty back will help because he can give you double figures each night efficiently. You need to have 3 guys deliver each night on any good team. We haven't had that yet. My gut tells me that UNCW will jump about 10 ppg soon due mainly to Ty G being back, but there is still a lot of work that needs to go into improved passing, cutting and playing inside out ball. Need a guy that can step up and give you something at the end of a clock as well.

Just looking at it, we have to have an identity at the 2 scoring wise for starters. If that's Ty for 25 minutes, to get 15 points, that's an improvement. We have to get Kai more aggressive again and collecting 10 ppg, but still prudently moving the ball and picking his spots-he plays well with Ty so he will get more chances when paired together. Brian and or Mike needs to play good defense, but still contribute offensively. Jaylen just needs to be patient and be a solid double figure guy and we need Marty to keep scoring efficiently. The freshmen will have their highs and lows, but they need to step up on both ends and if it's their night, then great. Each has shown promise and perhaps playing Boggs and Sims together would give more overall size and length/athleticism.

Hawks are 244 in defensive efficiency, but are near the bottom is steals per defensive play. That implies that we need more ball pressure and aggressiveness. If they were to improve this stat, they would also get better offensively as well. There has been much discussion about a pressing style and it may just be the best way given the look of this roster-not sure they will go that route yet. Regardless of style, they need to sit into a stance and defend with talking. And, they need to gang rebound. They should definitely make it a goal to get at least 6 steals per game at a minimum with at least 30 deflections.

Baby steps towards these goals would seem to go a long way towards improvement. Longer term, they do have a good recruit coming in that is very athletic/good, but getting 1 more athletic true big seems to needed as well.

When I look at those stats, there is one in particular that stands out. Offensive rebounding. #317 in the nation at 6.2 per game. Considering the fact we also are #313 shooting 38.5% of our shots, there are a lot of rebounds to get and we aren't getting them. So, very few second chance points. In other words, we're one an done when we shoot.

The stats are all bad, so it's hard to pick out the ones that hurt us the most. I'm not sure we can solve the offensive rebounding problem due to our lack of size. The only way I can see to improve our one and done offense is to shoot a lot more 3's. The return of Ty should help our percentage made. Then, we would hopefully increase our points per posession and maybe even have a chance at long offensive rebounds with our guards.

The next area that could help our offense is to increase our steals and TO's we create. That would give us more posessions. As we've said over and over, a press would help in that area. We also seem to finish well when we do get in transition.

Although our defense isn't hovering near last in the nation right now, it still isn't top notch. But that improvement has been overwhelmed by what is now one of the worst offenses in the nation. We are once again in need of a drastic improvement to even compete. I just don't know that this coach and this staff are the type to make the drastic changes to win. I was at least encouraged that we employed a lot of press in the loss to Charlotte. And when we pressed hard, we got results. Let's see if the coaches learned from this or if it was a one off.

Yep this is pretty spot on. I think the only way to have success with this roster is to speed up the game by pressing and shoot a lot of 3s. Estime is a huge loss due to his 3 point shooting. We really need Tolefree to step up on the offensive end.

Good concise evaluation Gary and enjoyed your read and input 82. Yep, fellas it looks like we have to speed it up or get more efficient on both ends fellas.

The data is there and this team is young for sure, but you have to find a way to get more point per possession and give less point per possession. It's that simple and I feel that the guys need to know the current data for it to sink in. With this roster as it stands, I feel that they should focus on getting stops period and that ends with a board. That's something that is collective and bonds the team. Momentum and team growth will be built on defensive stops and an attitude of sharing the rock big time with reversals early in the clock including post touches and a willingness to pass out of contested post touches if it's not there.

Wofford playing the type of offense we need. Taking it to the Tarheels with one big man and knocking down a lot of 3's.

Toews turned down a scholarship to Wofford to be a Seahawk.

I doubt it unless he has some kind of setback. He's already technically a 4th year junior, and CB needs all the help he can get to keep his job.

If he redshirts this year, he easily could transfer as a Grad transfer after this year or next to a Power 5 team. Always risky redshirting mid major players in the hope to get them for an extra year.

While you are correct on all fronts, eventually, especially when you are not in position to win, you have to do what's right for the young man!

He's probably headed for the Grad Transfer route eventually regardless. So might as well redshirt him.

If we're as bad as it looks like we may be this year, I have a serious concern the propellors may fall off the UNCW ship and the transfer life raft will be full.

Yep... McGrath needs to get this thing turned around quickly or we’re going to be in a world of hurt come mid March.
