Then Zohn should keep climbing that ladder until he gets to the top. Obviously, ODU's not his dream job.
The point I'm making is I want him here long term so he can help build this program with quality recruits. I don't think he can make that comittment and will probably leave a third time for another program.

RE: Rahnes Staff Discussion
I hope Rahnes is the Head Coach for a P5 school in 5 years. That’ll mean he’s done good things at ODU. We can’t compete with thier resources and it’s a bigger stage, those are facts. I don’t need that kind of loyalty. Zohn leaving for VT doesn’t bother me as much as him being available to come back now. That tells me he’s a better recruiter than coach maybe. It sounded like Tech let him go because they were dissatisfied with the run game with him as RB coach. Local ties is something Rahnes will need and Burden becoming available provides a unique opportunity for us. Stinespring would seem to fit that bill as well but maybe Burden would come cheaper at a lower position. IDK.

You should want someone who wants to move up, it means they will excel at their job.
You need to look no further than Brian Scott to see what having no desire to move on does to a program.
BTW your hatred for Zohn seems personal

RE: Rahnes Staff Discussion
Again, I’m a basketball guy but help me understand. The football team barely beat Norfolk State, then lost 11 straight games and ODU wised up and replaced the coach. Now, the guys who did most of the actual coaching on this 11 loss team, the position coaches, some want to keep the same guys who couldn’t get the job done. I mean I checked the scores and the Monarchs every game it seemed were giving up 38 points or whatever and not scoring much every game. Both sides of the ball were not very good.
New sheriff in town, new outlook, Rahne needs his own team. I’d clean house too. That Zohn guy, former coach who recruited this area, he sounds like a possible former coach to keep. But what do I know.

mac, this was also my take (also as a basketball guy). Very confused that the consensus on this board seems to be wanting to keep most of the same losing staff in place. I say replace them all!

Because the damage was done to the team before Stinespring and Blackwell arrived. They’ve been here one year and have stellar credentials. Stiney as a recruiter, and Blackwell as a defensive mind. In fact, we’ve already seen significant improvement in recruiting and defense since they arrived and they barely had time to get settled. If BW had brought them in three years ago things might have been different. They both have potential to be head coaches one day. That’s my opinion anyway. I agree with you that Zohn would be a great addition as well. Would love to see him back on staff.

RE: Rahnes Staff Discussion
I'm not hearing anything like "keep them all". Not every coach was a loser, it can pay dividends to be selective and keep a coach or two who adds value. Coaching staff is like a team. You might lose most games, but you don't necessarily get rid of your best players, just the ones who don't add value.
You don't expect Rahne to get rid of Galt do you? Just because he was with the old staff? He knows Galt, knows what he can do and will undoubtedly keep him if he can.

I would think the new coach would have some kind of vision he wants to implement and would hire staff that have the strengths to execute his vision. Maybe there is some existing staff that fits that bill. If not, so be it.

@DanielCFB1: Some names to watch for Ricky Rahne's staff at Old Dominion: Zohn Burden, David Corley, Sean Cascarano, Tommy Galt, A.J. Jackson, Will Windham, Trevor Andrews.
That's a good mix of young and experienced. A bunch of ties to PSU, but also a bunch of Virginia ties, as well.

None of the coaches from this past season will be on the coaching staff for the 2020 season

If Selig hires him again this will be the 3rd time. I'm sure he'll still be job hunting and it won't be long before he "doesn't hesitate for a minute"
Like I said before, he is someone that doesn't want to be here.
Not so fast we have had this happened with VT transfers before and John Richardson came back to ODU after it not working out with VT. Most of us loyal ODU fans will welcome Zohn back with welcome hands and mabey this time he stays where he belongs.

RE: Rahnes Staff Discussion
If I were a new football head coach hired to resurrect a program after the previous head coach was fired following a last three seasons of 5-7, 4-8, and 1-11 -- I cannot imagine I would be interested in keeping any of the existing staff. One exception to that for Coach Rahne could well be Director of Sports Performance (strength and conditioning coach) Dwight Galt, who was only here for one year and who Rahne knows well from their time together at Penn State. Because of Rahne's history as a develper of QBs, another possibility could be QB coach Ron Whitcomb, if he likes what he has seen out of Whitcomb, who I believe has a pretty strong reputation as a QB coach. Other than Galt and possibly Whitcomb, I would be highly surprised if anyone else is retained.

Well put ..... he is the HC and should hire who fits his vision for the program. No reason to favor someone with 'local tribal knowledge' -- if the HC thinks they fit, I'm sure that he will keep them. If not, put his folks in place. After all, it's his butt on the line if he doesn't produce, right?

Whitcomb??!!
IMHO he was a major part of past problems, and his only coaching experience has been as the ODU QB coach.

Seriously, Whitcomb? IMHO He rode the Demarco and Heinicke train as long as he could ... with his football camps, etc. Did you see any program screaming to pick him up from ODU as a grand master of QB coaching? ODU Football QB selection and development has been ridiculous the last several years ..... I'd be in shock if the new HC would keep Whitcomb -- he will be lucky to land at an FCS program with his resume, but hey, maybe that QB Camp thing can be a winner.

An interesting thing to do while we try to figure out his staff is watch who starts to follow Rahne's twitter account now that this is out.
So far we have:
--Weston Wolff
--A number of HS coaches from VA and NC, one from KS
--a bunch of HS and JUCO kids
--Couple college position coaches and GAs (one from Iowa St., one from Michigan)

There were schools interested. Ron did a lot of good things at ODU, including the development of Heinicke, Demarco, Washington, and Larussa......no need to diss him. He certainly was not the major reason.
