I want a coach who wants to be gone in 4 years tops(if he wants to be gone in 2 or 3 all the better) take the extra money we make from increased attendance and get another coach who cant wait to get the hell out of Hattiesburg. Eventually after 20 years or so we might be a Boise again. Its going to take time and patience and a will to go Straight TO THE TOP but that has to be more than a gimmicky commercial.

yea!!! another objective and logical brain is back in the mix...

Said it before, will say it again: The first question in every head football coach interview USM conducts should be, “Where do you see yourself in 6 years?”

If their answer is any form of “still here,” thank them for their time and toss their resume in the trash.

I’m feeling like you do about my season tickets. I’m pretty much just in it for the parking pass for when I do go at this point.

Couldn't agree more with this statement. My four tickets are used about twice a year because its just hard to watch.

If Chris Peterson hadn’t stuck around so long and left in 2-4 years, Boise St never would have been.

Bull. Boise had two coaches before Peterson who had won 10 games twice in three seasons (Koetter) and then another coach (Hawkins) who went 53-11, 37-3 in the WAC and won 4 straight WAC titles. Then came Petersen. Boise was the best WAC team before Peterson got there. Peterson benefitted as much from the culture and foundation of Boise as Boise benefited from him. Don't give me the if it wasn't for that coach crap. This is exactly the plan I am advocating for (the Boise model). Eventually one coach is going to stay a little longer than the others but that is only after you establish a foundation and culture of winning. We have neither.

You could not be more wrong about that if you tried. Boise’s current run started back in the late ‘90s under Dirk Koetter, who went 26-10 in 3 years, then moved on to Arizona St. Then the job went to a guy named Dan Hawkins who went 53-11 over 5 season and left for Colorado. That’s 2 coaches in 8 years with a record of 79-21 and 6 conference championships. THEN Peterson took over.

[I see Cyc beat me by a minute on this, but I’ll just leave it.]

Chris Peterson didn't start Boise's run. Hawkins did and then left for Colorado. Peterson was only there for 8 years and the reason he didn't leave sooner is because Boise was paying him. His contract was $2milliin/year when he left for Washington. Boise went undefeated and won a BCS game against Oklahoma in his first year. He didn't build anything. He was the next guy up.

And this basically is what Hopson had handed to him (within reason), which is why if he's gone, there will be no tears coming from me... but as said, we're stuck with him for one more year...

Monken turned around the Eloss jalopy with no engine and no fuel, fixed it up, gave Hopson the keys to a nice hot-rod on the block that just needed to be fine tuned... and he wrecked the damn thing.

I'm a big opportunity cost guy. Keeping Hopson is too big a liability in my opinion. However, as has been said by many on here, he isn't going anywhere this year. A number of fans are going to walk away and some we will not get back. Especially with LSU doing as well as they are this year, I know a couple trading in the black and gold for purple and gold. It's unfortunate and that isn't the way I was drawn but I can definitely see why they would.

I agree....if the move wasn't made after the fau loss, it was never an option that is shameful if southern miss wants to get serious about football again...

I'll always bleed Black and Gold.....however, until the product improves on the gridiron and the court, fan interest level will continue to wane moving forward....

if McClain doesn't figure out how to increase our budget to a competitive level relative to our peers (which is not an easy task), this fan will continue to expect nothing but mediocrity at best moving forward...

our budget is 125 out of 130 that have D1 football....that is unacceptable if one wants to win at an elevated level....

starting at the top, all I see today is a below average football coach and an unproven homeboy that should've never been hired in hoops....

yep, I don't envy Jeremy's current situation one single bit....he's staring at many a headache over the next 12-24 months...

that would be like hitting the 100,000.00 scratch-off....we're not lucky that way....firing E12L after a year liquidated the 4-leaf clovers we had in that 'endowment'...

hell, with our current budget/bennett and the jets at the helm, McClain will be fortunate to get rid of him next year...

Concur, I know he is much beloved by other Southern Miss fans (another one of us hire to me) but let's see what he can do. In two years we will either be on a firm foundation or we'll all but but in 1aa.

What has McClain even done so far? Everyone keeps praising him as if he’s a saint, but I honestly can’t even remember him speaking to the media once about anything. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if he’s getting stuff done behind the scenes, but I haven’t heard of anything actually happening.

So am I missing something? What’s he doing that’s so much different than McGillis or Gilbert?

I have to agree. I haven’t seen much from him yet. Firing our incompetent coach would be a start.

RE: Hopson’s gotta go.
The beer sales was a big step. Too bad nobody’s in the stadium to buy it.

Frankly, I think it’s too late to expect anything but an eventual exit from FBS. Everybody else was being aggressive about fundraising, investment, and winning 15-20 years ago. We’re simply too far behind now, with teams that didn’t own a pair of shoulder pads 10 years ago doing football better than us now.

Getting left out of the AAC and Hopson proving juiceless are the final nails. Nobody gives a sh*t about finishing 3rd in the division in this incarnation of CUSA every year. Hell, not a lot are going to care if we win the damned thing unless we do it 4-5 years in a row. We need some drastic changes quickly just to keep this thing from heading straight down the toilet, much less improve the situation. Problem is, we’ve left ourselves with no tools with which to make those changes.

If I’m McClain, I’m burning up the phone every day trying to do two things: working on our & another CUSA institution’s defection to the Sun Belt and replacing Hopson with an energetic up-and-comer. Then maybe I’ve got something to ask people to invest in going forward.
