RE: $5M a year for Norvell
Norvell hasnt won a championship here, maybe that's what ole miss is looking for. His bowl record sucks too. He can do that for 5 million a year there easily.
His biggest wins are probably beating SMU, UCLA and a probation Ole Miss.
His teams crap the bed once a year. Tulane last year, Temple and damn near Tulas this year
I was sick when Fuente left. I like Norvell but I'm not jumping off a bridge if he leaves.
Hell I will coach them and lose to lsu, bama, and aub every year for half what they are gonna pay the next guy they hire.

RE: $5M a year for Norvell
While I don't think he'd take the Ole Miss job...it does have this going for it..
A) they have better football facilities than us
B) he can get the same caliber of athletes there that he can here. In some cases...even better caliber of athletes than he gets at Memphis
C) the money will be there for his assistants
Ole Miss would have to learn to be happy with 8-3/7-4 years.
My guess is that with their smugness...they'd point out that Hugh Freeze was able to accomplish more than he was expected to (without remembering exactly how he went about that)
At Ole Miss, he'd still be roughly in the same area....close to family.
Ultimately..I think its a dead-end type of job.
Its fine for young un-proven guys who want to make their mark and move on to something better...or grizzled old veteran coaches who would see it as their last job.
I think Norvell can hold out for much, much better than OM.

RE: $5M a year for Norvell
Given my hatred for Ole Miss, there is really no bad outcome here.
If they can't hire our coach, then bwaaaaaaaaa ha ha, you can't hire Memphis' coach away.
If they do hire our coach, they had to come crawling here to find a coach.
Either way, screw them.

Literally no one here cares about your opinion of our town.
Fayetteville sucks man. I get so many recruiters from Walmart trying to convince me to move there. Never going to happen. lol.
You are right! I lived in Broken Arrow, OK, a suburb of Tulsa, for 7 years. Spent a lot of time in Fayetteville on business. The population has grown so fast in the area that the infrastructure has not been able to keep up. Traffic is a nightmare!!! The Tulsa area, on the other hand, is really nice. Enjoyed my time there.

Latest update on coaching carousel as of 9:01 EST:
1) FSU had a press conference scheduled for tomorrow---it's now cancelled
2) FSU is now going hard after Matt Campbell
3) If they don't get Matt Campbell, then they are going to 'throw the bank' at Mike Norvell

Chris - any idea what was supposed to have been announced at the presser and what caused it to be cancelled? Did they think they had a deal done with someone and then he back out? We'll accept your best guesses - LOL!

RE: $5M a year for Norvell
Mike Norvell is not your typical 'follow the money' type of guy. He has morals.
Norvell currently is making $2.5 million a year. He'll now be able to receive a major boost by UofM to around $3.6 to as much as $4 million with incentives that will keep him happy, to feel appreciated and enough to pay his assistant coaches.
Norvell knows and loves the unique Memphis culture. Unlike Fuente who left for first offer to get out.
His wife loves Memphis. He calls himself a "Memphian".
Plus he has a rare good friendship with Penny and they support each other. Penny will tell our AD Veatch to pay Mike.
UofM also is completing our new IPF this spring that will impact recruiting. Our football facilities are now on par with many P5 programs.
We have national TV exposure (4 games this year on ABC), recruiting and a passionate growing fanbase and winning culture that he helped to build.

Not sure what was planned. That’s just the word out of Tallahassee. I do know they have planned to make the announcement this week.

RE: $5M a year for Norvell
Absolutely some of the most hilarious posts in this thread are comparisons to Hugh Freeze and his great success at OM. Biggest success he ever had was as the girls basketball coach while at BHS, much better than his football team accolades.
Guy finally makes is to a fledgling SEC bottom dweller and in his second year after going .500, brings in the 5th ranked recruiting class in the country to Oxford, MS. REALLY? Can you spell corruption?
Did no one see when suddenly a perennial low tier SEC team goes to #3 in the country, a smell was surrounding that program? You know the rest of the story, head coach knew all the bad laundry.
IMO, Coach Norvell is too smart to fall for the Black Bears or any other of the 2-3 year jobs that are available, save FL ST. Will never win a National Championship at any of the other dogs.

RE: $5M a year for Norvell
From perusing the FSU boards they seem to have a really negative opinion of Norvell and most think hiring him would be a failure. I just hope their people who do the hiring feel the same way. For instance,
“ If Norvell is the best we can get, I'd rather pick up the phone and re-connect with Mark Stoops. At least he's run a program in a real conference.”
“ So if I get this right we want a non recruiter HC at Mac level school, with a winning record?”
“ If you’re telling me norvell is best we can get, why not Elliott or Jeff Scott or Aranda or Grinch? Just as much risk in my mind and they actually understand what it’s like to go into a 5 stars home and sell him on what success looks like..”
“ **** norvell dumb move!!!”
“ First program to implement its own death penalty..”
“ Go watch mic’d up with Norvell on YouTube. Lol i mean he runs around a lot but he doesn’t get me excited. He reminds me of willie and that is scary. If it is truly him, I hope he proves me wrong but damn”

Found this article from a pro-Olde Miss site: https://www.redcuprebellion.com/2019/12/...-drinkwitz
“ He is wanting to get out of Memphis, per sources, and seems poised for a Power 5 job.” It doesn’t even surprise me any more what garbage these “sports writers” can make up and not worry about being held accountable.

Hands down, but I'm sure Norvell also saw what Freeze was able to do at Ole Miss.
Wherever Norvell goes he's going to win. Now whether it's enough to please the expectations of said school is whole other thing in itself.
Yep (cheat to win & get caught) and one more major infraction might get OM the death penalty.
How successful was Freeze really? He was 39-25 over 5 seasons and went 5-7 and struggled his last season.
Is 8-5 every year really going to keep Norvell around long term at Ole Miss?
The sell for Memphis needs to be a $4 million package with a long term contract and illustrating the lack of success within the Ole Miss program. Nothing against the job it's who you are going up against in the conference. Facilities, revenue, boosters all huge pluses with the program, but it is too hard to compete. Long term he would make more money at Memphis. Do we really expect him to win long term against Coach O, Saban, Jimbo, Kirby, Malzahn, Mullen and the resources those programs have?
How successful was Freeze? Successful enough that he was going to take the Florida job before they hired McElwain. Successful enough that he took Ole Miss to back to back NY6 bowls. Successful enough to where he beat Alabama twice. Successful enough to where he had Ole Miss within one play of winning the SEC west. Freeze was successful at Ole Miss, his issue was his ego and then the off the field issues.
Teams like Ole Miss, Arkansas, Miss State if they can consistently win 8 games and then every once in a while pop for 10 or 11 wins they will be content with that.

Everyone around Memphis seems to believe Norvell is an easy sell to their fan base. It's not. They think their list should include Urban, Franklin, and other hall of fame caliber coaches. It's a really good job, but don't think it will attract those names.

How much in bonuses has Norvell made this season? What's that structure like? Is it feasible to be over $3 million every year? Seems like a $1 million raise with nice bonus structure would keep him around unless FSU throws the bank at him. Like Geoff said - FSU is a much better job than some of the others being mentioned.

There are two guys that seem perfect who would take the job. Matt Campbell should be the obvious target from day one. He has done very well at 2 marginal programs, he's young and he can recruit. Matt Rhule is maybe a little too boring for them, but he should also be an obvious target.
