RE: Orange Bowl in a bad spot - Recommended Solution
This proposal was only my suggestion to allow the ACC to avoid the discomfort of having an unranked UVA team take an Orange Bowl slot, should they lose to Clemson as expected.

No one beneifts from having UVA in the Orange Bowl and by allowing UVA and Notre Dame to basically swap bowl slots, the money stays the same to all parties and the ACC's premier bowl partner is protected

The 14 full members of the ACC benefit.

That’s the ACC’s record in OOC P5 games. That’s a worse win percentage than what the MWC and the AAC had against the P5. Defenders of the ACC isn’t that bad narrative please try to explain how this is not mediocrity.

So what? Don't watch the game then....it is that simple

Do they?

I would argue the 14 full members of the ACC Benefit more by having a happy Orange Bowl partner than by forcing the Orange bowl to take a unranked team coming off a loss.

Again, we are talking 1 year here

It can't be any worse than when the Orange had to take NIU

Last year the Orange had a playoff. The two years before that they got homegrown Florida teams vs. Big 10 teams

Right ... and a solution can be tailored to handle these exceptional situations. For example, if there is a contract clause that says the Orange Bowl can take Notre Dame instead of the ACC team if the ACC team is unranked and Notre Dame is ranked, then that obviously would only apply in very exceptional years like this one.

So it doesn't damage the entirety of the ACC - OB structure, it just handles an exceptional contingency.

Virginia is going to the Orange Bowl. Y'all are free to not watch the game and watch the Camping World bowl as the parasites steal a bid away from an actual ACC member.

Even bad exposure can be worthwhile. And they might play well. Its also a bonus for the athletes.

4 years after losing the Orange Bowl 70-33 to WVU, Clemson was in the title game.

I agree, no question it's a good rule for the ACC. The UVA players will want to play in the OB even if they get beat 40-0.

It's just bad for everyone else, including the bowl and national fans, thus the discussion.

Then don’t watch. Save the time for when Clemson tap-dances on your precious SEC & Big Slow in the playoffs.

Clemson is a great team and may very well do that. You've done it twice before and if I had to bet my life on who wins the title next month, I'd pick Clemson yet again.

Though one reason for that is that it is ideal for Clemson that the very softness of the ACC allows you to plot and scheme and develop players for the playoffs in a way that SEC and B1G teams can't. The Ohio States and Alabamas get banged up playing other powers while Dabo can keep starters fresh, experiment with different lineups, and give talented freshmen recruits playing time so everyone is rested and seasoned and primed for the playoffs. No wonder you love the ACC - it's the perfect CFP launching pad for Clemson.

We know it's not that Clemson is just so much more talented, because the Meyer-era OSU teams have about 12 more guys in the NFL than do the Dabo-era Clemson teams.

But, all that has zero to do with the Orange Bowl and the ACC. For the sake of the viewing public, it would be nice to allow the OB to match a Notre Dame or Florida vs Penn State instead of Virginia.

And it would be nice for the Cotton Bowl to take Notre Dame, or any other team ahead of Memphis, but nobody is complaining.

Analyzing teams at the beginning of the season is MUCH different than how they finished, and UVA finished strong. Did they lose to Miami? Yes, the same Miami team that barely lost to Florida.

Well, the ACC could always switch to 9 conference games and hardly play any P5 teams like some conferences. Can’t lose if you avoid the whole issue. 04-cheers

UVA finished "strong" by beating .... North Carolina by 7 (5-6 before yesterday), Liberty (good grief), Georgia Tech by 5 (won the turnover battle 3-0 vs Georgia and still lost by 50), and Virginia Tech.

Their OOC schedule was Old Dominion, Liberty, William & Mary, and ... Notre Dame. Guess who beat them by 15? And just a month ago, they lost to a Louisville team that Kentucky routed yesterday - and this isn't basketball.

They played one currently-ranked team all year, a team ranked outside the top 15, and lost easily.

There's just no defending UVA for the Orange Bowl. Heck, you're right, Memphis doesn't belong in the Cotton Bowl, but they are way more deserving of that than UVA is of an NY6 game.

You have weird definitions.

In your world, a voluntary, bilateral contractual agreement = "stealing".

This is why teams should not schedule hard. You don't get any credit for it. Even when the ACC schedules hard and wins hard top to bottom and is arguably the best conference in the country (2003) you won't get credit. It gets reduced to two numbers and everything else is thrown out.

Much ado about nothing. The Orange Bowl will get either Alabama or Florida, which means they'll get solid TV ratings and solid ticket sales.

What does deserve have to do with it? We have a contract with the Orange Bowl to split at least 55 million.

That's 25 million less than the Rose or Sugar Bowls so the Orange has paid for what they get.
