Gotta feel pretty good with November. Off two weeks until game vs Lamar away.

RE: Rice MBB v. Liberty
Rice wins 77-69. ECU decided they wanted to continue scoring when the game was mostly over, so the final score is a little closer than what it really should have been. But still some easily identifiable problems. ECU finished with 20 offensive rebounds for 24 second-chance points. Mullins and Moore both missed FTs at the end, which would have hurt in a closer game. Some stuff that needs to be sharpened up before conference play starts.

But a win is a win and 2-1 on this trip without Murphy is a good sign. 16 all in the second half from Peterson. Mullins seems to be slowly rounding into form. Martin and Adams are dependable. 6-3 with some winnable games coming up so all in all I'd say it's been a good start to the season.

This team is better than I expected. Losing QMB hurts a bit defensively, but he slowed our offensive pace. His loss is closer to a wash than I expected. Mullins and Martin are playing well. Adams, Moore, Peterson and, especially, Murphy, are all much improved from last year. We should win a bunch more games.

RE: Rice MBB v. Liberty
I think Fielder is contributing really good minutes as a freshman. Clearly the other 2 freshman are also able to play some spot minutes as well. Dare I say that the men are currently having a better season than women right now? I know the SOS is not even in the same ballpark, but still the women are losing games to teams that they should not be losing to. 6-3, can we win 14 more games to reach my prediction of 20 wins? If the team continues to improve and the players continue to develop, I think so. I'm not sure we're going to play anyone else as good as Arkansas(#22 on KenPom), UH or Liberty the rest of the way unless WKU or LA Tech are better than they appear right now.

Lamar and Sam aren’t shoe-ins but we have a chance at a 10-3 non-conference record.

Liberty won the tournament with a 13 point win btw that was a bigger margin for most of the 2nd half.

HBU has our number too (1-3 in the last four)... But yes, agreed that 10-3 in the non-con seems in-reach.

Have we played HBU since Pera became the head coach?

Nice to be 6-3 on the young season. When I first saw the Liberty score, I was like: "We lost to Liberty?" Then I saw they were 7-0 and having their best start in their short school history, which helped a little.
So, we seem to be at second-tier level compared to conference so far. Hope we can continue/improve on that and especially as conference play begins later on. Hoping to see several of these players develop quickly, and that all of them stay on campus and get their degrees here, especially whoever turns out to be our best non-senior players. Go Owls!

Nope! We played them all three of Rhoades’ years... Lost the first two, won the third.

Liberty is pretty solid in hoops. They beat Mississippi State in the tournament last year and were even better 2 years ago I believe? In reference to the other post about CUSA hoops, UTEP might be legit this season. They might be the best team we play the rest of the season.

I'm still thinking it's Western Kentucky. We'll soon see how good they are, as they are playing Louisville (in Nashville) and at Arkansas over the next two weeks.

The Arkansas game is actually @WKU.

They’ve done a nice job of football game for slightly smaller payday + home basketball game.

Good catch. My mistake.

RE: Rice MBB v. Liberty
Fun with numbers. Taking out the Arkansas game (for obvious reasons) and the non-d1 opponents, we've been an insane second half offense this year. Second halves of 55, 50x3, 39x2. I don't know what happens during our locker room talks, but the difference coming out is staggering. Compared to full game team averages, our first half scoring pace would put us at roughly 275-280 in the country. Our second half scoring pace would put us at *6th* in the country.

1H Pts Scored: 32.3
1H Pts Allowed:35.9

2H Pts Scored: 45.1
2H Pts Allowed: 38.7

And perhaps an even nicer job of winning that football game.

Could Rice do that? Could Rice do any part of that--the scheduling or the winning? Until Rice can, we are kidding ourselves about getting out of CUSA.

Put our recent first half football team with the second half men’s basketball team, and you might have something.

Well, they’ve done it with Arkansas and Wisconsin.

They beat Arkansas and lost to Wisconsin. I think we might even beat Arkansas this year.

We play @Arkansas in 2021... One would hope that we’d be good by then (it’d be year 4 of Bloom-assuming doesn’t lay another egg next year) and year 2 of whoever Arkansas hires this offseason.

RE: Rice MBB v. Liberty
Men's basketball is still off until this Saturday, but Rice is ranked #151 by Massey and #174 by Sagarin. Considering the last 2 losses against UH (#42 Massey, #36 Sagarin) and Liberty (#68 Massey, #78 Sagarin) were without a healthy Murphy, fingers crossed the team can continue to improve. Incidentally, Arkansas is still undefeated and ranked #30 by Massey and #21 by Sagarin. So all 3 of Rice's losses were against pretty decent teams.

Upcoming men's schedule (Massey/Sagarin rankings):
12/7 @ Lamar (221/229)
12/14 vs. HBU (299/322)
12/19 vs. St. Thomas (D III team)
12/29 vs. Sam Houston (173/182)
1/2 @ Marshall (214/242)
1/4 @ WKU (100/97)

Rice needs to take care of business in the next 3 games against weak opponents. The SHSU, Marshall, WKU stretch should really give us an idea of what to expect for the team over the rest of the season. Can Rice take care of business at home against a mid-tier opponent like Sam Houston? Sam Houston and UCSB are similarly ranked right now. Can Rice defeat mediocre CUSA opponents like Marshall on the road? Can Rice compete with a good CUSA team on the road? Penn and WKU are similarly ranked right now.

If Rice gets through this stretch undefeated, this is probably a top-100 team (as demonstrated by the Penn & WKU wins). If Rice loses to WKU but wins the rest, this is probably a top-150 team which is still a step in the right direction. Any other losses and things look a little more muddled. Of course, the Massey and Sagarin rankings for our opponents could change a lot in the next 3-4 weeks, even though Rice has a relatively quiet schedule in December.
