Semi-OT: Is college worth it
I haven't seen this posted elsewhere here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/education...rc404=true

"Is college worth it? Researchers at the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce tried to answer that question, using newly released federal data to try to calculate return on investment for thousands of colleges across the country."

I don't really understand all the metrics, but Rice is top 100 (out of 4500 schools) on my initial search.

Interesting article/study. Thanks for posting.

It ranks Rice at #64 when filtering for bachelor's degrees from 4-year colleges (private, public and for-profit) ... and at #51 when limiting it to private non-profits.

The article has 1,300+ comments since it was published on November 14. Quite a few are interesting and thought-provoking.

RE: Semi-OT: Is college worth it
On a related note, NPR had an article yesterday on Chile's attempt to make college publicly funded for anyone eligible to attend. They're up to zero-tuition charged to 60% of families (ordered by income), but they don't cover indirect costs, like room and board. Some interesting takeaways:
  • Politicians sold the program as universal state-funded college, but quickly had to pull it back to only the lowest 50% of incomes qualifying. There was no dramatic counter-revolution when they took budget control steps. They've modestly relaxed the qualifications since that initial retraction, but still aren't at universal post-secondary education.
  • Private schools that chose to participate have shown better ability to handle the lower per-student revenue. State universities are less flexible, leading to more difficulty with the state-mandated budget.

I like the idea of everyone getting an above-average education.

I suppose that works in Lake Woebegone, where the children are all above average.
