Mullins misses two free throws and then UH scores, 78-84. Grimes with a 3, 78-87.

RE: Rice vs. UH basketball
I would have liked to see Pera use one of his timeouts when it was within a possession to set up a play against the zone. But not sure it would have mattered with how Houston has scored the past 5 minutes. Turns out having a 5* transfer in is helpful.

Grimes shouldn’t even be playing this year. The NCAA really is garbage. We look tired at the end and 2nd chance points killed us.

Mullins misses 4 straight FTs to cap off the meltdown. His shot looks really, really bad in all facets.

I started watching at that 4-minute TV timeout. Blame this one on me. (Though it sounds like they were starting to melt down before that.) They were leading out of the TV timeout, and now they aren't anymore.

How much do you think Tillman paid to let Grimes play? If he’s allowed to transfer in and play immediately why isn’t our transfer for Tech? I don’t recall any of our transfers playing immediately in the last 10 years.

Drake Greenwood got a waiver in baseball IIRC.

I'm confident saying that we can probably play with any team in Conference USA, which is good. We're still very vulnerable on defense against better teams. I'm sure we'll see more zone looks with how the end of the game looked. And I hope we ourselves play almost exclusively man defense because our zone looked about as porous as can be.

Penn lost by 11 to Lafayette so that win is looking less great.

Will be interesting to see how UCSB plays @Oregon St.

If we play like that I agree we should be able to compete with anyone in conference and the rest of our OOC schedule is all winnable.

Defense wasn’t great in the 2nd half. Definitely didn’t like the zone and I’m glad we didn’t stick with it too long. 2nd chance points kept them in the game and they capitalized in the end when we were tired.

Would’ve liked to see Crisler, Olivari, and Parrish some more. With Murphy out we were just tired at the end. I know Pera wanted the win but you can’t just drop the whole bench in big games.

This would be mine, also as a child, but it was UT, right?

checked it just now. TCU was the last win of the season and we finished 1 game in front of TAMU, who we lost to there the next game. Won vs TU one week earlier, so I think my memory is right. Also, I think it was on tv, which was unusual for the time.

Yeah, definitely weird that Olivari didn't get a minute. Even if it was just for spells, I thought his length could have been useful.

If I had money for every FB and BSKB game we have outplayed CH until the last 5 minutes, then just get out-athleticed, I would have Tillman money...…..

All you need to know about Leebron’s attitude towards athletic success at Rice can be found in his most recent tweet.

Congratulating your team on blowing a huge lead to your rival. Don’t think you’d see the president of Duke (an academic peer) do the same if they lost to UNC.

RE: Rice vs. UH basketball
Honestly, I didn't think UH was anything special. They certainly don't seem to be at the level they were the last two years, I'll put it that way. They got hot in the 2nd half obviously. But if Murphy doesn't turn his ankle, if we didn't keep Fiedler in too long, and if we made our free throws down the stretch, we could have won that game. Rice is certainly streaky this season - both good and bad.

I agree that we can make some noise in the conference tournament. But we do need to go deeper into the bench. Starting this weekend, with 3 games in 3 days. The bench is what's going to carry us for a deep conference tournament run (looking way ahead), so we may as well get them the minutes now.

BTW, the Harvard grad transfer didn't dress tonight. Maybe someone already has mentioned that. I'll need to go back through this thread.

RE: Rice vs. UH basketball
A pretty solid effort given our best playing missed half the game, and then tried to play with a noticeable limp. That 5-minute "media/facebook" timeout at the 4:59 mark, when we were up 77-71 and UH had no more remaining timeouts, gave the Coogs an opportunity to gather themselves....and it totally killed our momentum and offensive flow.

Our defense was actually quite good until those last 5 minutes when we gave up too many wide-open 3s. Houston is clearly bigger, quicker and more athletic, but we stayed with them for 35 minutes.

Mullins still not himself, and the Freshmen will get better as the season progresses. I think we should be able to hold our own against anyone in CUSA, which is a lot better than most of us were predicting preseason (or after the ARkansas game).
