RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
On the positive side of things, Ferri won the [/i]125 class at the Clarion Open and Mutschler took second, impressive for a true freshman. Tyler Bates also took second, losing in SV.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Based on what I know about college wrestling general - I would bet the staff is playing the long game with 125 pounders. Blake looks big for a 125 - Ferri looks like a lifetime 125. Maybe the plan is to redshirt Ferri while there is a serviceable freshman there that may only make the weight for one year. Hope he goes .500 on the year, improves and adjusts in time for MAC tourney time.

Given that Ferri didn’t wrestle at this weekend’s tournament, I think you’re correct. Flo Wrestling did report earlier in the year that Blake was the starter. I bet that’s what they were told by the KSU staff because the plan has always been for Ferri to RS this season.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Looks like we have our 184 class figured out. Bates is VERY tall (looks like a shooting guard) and his height will be an issue for other wrestlers. He placed 1st, as did McNally at 174, in an 8 team tournament.

Blake 125 went 1-2
Rooney 133 took 3rd losing 9-3 to #14 ranked opponent
Simpson 141 went 1-2 losing to CMU
Komara 149 took 3rd losing to CMU in championship round, 14-3, but then beat him for 3rd by a score of 6-3
Chrisman 157 took 3rd losing to #1 seed but beating #3 seed
Byland 165 took 4th losing to #3 seed from CMU by a score of 4-3. He went 2-2 and lost 3rd place match by 1 point.
McNally 174 1st
Bates 184 1st
McCracken 197 took 3rd losing 7-6 to CMU #2 seed
Berthold 285 went 0-2

This is probably our lineup for the season. 125 is a question because of inexperience as a true freshman but Blake has the proper HS credentials. As V2KSU pointed out, Ferri will redshirt this season and then next year’s probable lineup has him returning at 125. Perhaps Blake will move to 133? But Gould is a 133 - maybe he goes to 141?

At 141, Simpson has come a long way from getting beat up as a true freshman so I hope he can elevate his game just a little more. Chrisman at 157 is an unknown commodity. Byland at 165 is a great kid that has made his way into the lineup. He doesn’t have the HS pedigree but he can hold his own. 285 Berthold improved as the season went on last year but he remains a question mark.

Kyle Conel won his first match at PSU. It wasn’t pretty as Jacob Koser of Navy nearly upset Conel. Kyle used a third-period reversal to claim a 4-3 victory over the Navy rookie who was wrestling just the fourth match of his career.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
From the results of the Applachian State open, it looks as if CMU is back to be near the top of the MAC like they were many years past.

I think Chrisman took advantage of his redshirt freshmen season last year and will be the starter at 157lbs for this year and the next 3 years.

At 165lbs, Kade Byland is the guy for this season, as prized recruit James Limongi is taking a redshirt season and has 3 wins & 4 losses.

I was expecting Berthold to make a jump this season, but he has been getting put on his back too often. In looking at the statistics thus far, it doesn't show that Cover has wrestled in either tournament (injured?).

At 133lbs, Gould is wrestling at that weight during his redshirt season and Rooney is a 5th year senior.

At 125lbs, Blake will take his lumps early, but I think he will come on after winter break.

At 149lbs, Mutschler, Colasurdo, Ciotti, & Senz are all wrestling there in the 1st 2 tournaments with Komara being the starter. Mutschler is 5-3, Ciotti is 1-2, & Colasurdo is 4-2. Mutschler & Colasurdo are taking their redshirt seasons. 1 of those 3 I would imagine drops down to 141lbs next season to try and unseat Simpson, unless Gould bumps up to 141lbs?

Caldwell, Becker, Yackee, Johnson, Langguth, Welbaum, & Cover haven't wrestled in either tournament thus far.

Rooney @ 133lbs and Mast @ 184lbs are both 5th year seniors and they are the only 2 seniors period. I think Andrassy is inching back to getting this program back to where it was a few years ago. Stability with the coaching staff and adding Te'Shaun Campbell will help the upper weights with Scott & Campbell coaching them.

Should be interesting to see who is in the recruiting class as 11/13/19 is signing day for college wrestling.

And here I thought with Sanderson’s guidance he’d be cruising.

I love Kyle, I really, really, really do. But he’s not in shape, just like the start of every season. He’ll be ready by the time of NCAAs but Big 10 wrestlers are a lot better than what he saw in the MAC and I could see him losing several time before the regular season is over.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Oklahoma 29 KSU 7
Michigan State 36 KSU 6
Michigan State 21 Oklahoma 16

KSU Wrestling now heads to Navy Classic next Saturday and that tournament has gotten more competitive each year, so it should be a tough test.

Then KSU Wrestling heads to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, for the 1st time in a few years. Andrassy said that he would like to go every year, but sometimes finals week is the same week as this tourney and they can't.

After that, they head to the Cleveland State Open on December 14th and then at NIU on 12/18/19 and finishing 2019 @ Wisconsin on 12/19/19.

They have a 19 day break until the next match which is SIU Edwardsville (now a MAC member) at home on 01/07/20. Virginia Tech beat Ohio State and some of the experts say that OSU only has 2 wrestlers, wrestling up to their ability/ranking.

Kyle lost a recent match against Central Michigan. He’s even more out of shape than the beginning of other seasons at KSU. If he’s not careful, he will get taken out of the starting lineup at PSU.

We only won 4 of 20 matches yesterday on a day where our inexperience really showed at times. Although we aren’t at the level of OU and MSU, we lost quite a few matches that we should have won.

285 / 0-2 and was not a great showing as pinned in both matches by unranked wrestlers. It’s going to be a long year at 285.
197 / 0-2 lost 3-2 and 5-3. Beat by #16 (3-2) in a match that McCracken controlled. Some suspect officiating had Coach A on his feet and red faced but this one should have been a win.
184 / 0-2 by pin to #19 and 5-3, with the latter being a match he should have won.
174 / 1-1 with a loss to #21 that saw McNally getting schooled early but he mounted a comeback but was too little, too late (12-8).
165 / 1-1 with a win by MD and a loss by pin.
157 / 0-2 lost 7-3 and 11-5 against #17 and #23.
149 / 0-2 lost in SV in a match that he had won with a TD that he couldn’t convert to the win, as well as a 5-3 loss. Komara should have won both of his matches.
141 / 0-2 by TF to #2 and 3-2 in another close match.
133 / 1-1 lost to #13 by a score of 7-5. Rooney turned in our best performance.
125 / 1-1 won in SV and was holding his own until he was pinned late. Hopefully he’s ok because his shoulder was torqued.

Although 11th of 18 teams is an improvement given the recent losses against MSU and OU, we were always hanging around the top 4 for this event historically. Rooney and McCracken wrestled well, as did McNally. Rooney is now ranked #20 and lost a close match to #10 ranked opponent. He beat #21 and #24 before his loss in the first place match. McCracken lost his title match against #13 ranked opponent by just 1 point (as did Rooney). He may show back up in the rankings but he definitely missed his opportunity against MSU and OU. McNally finished 5th but went 5-1 on the day, with his only loss coming against MSU wrestler who he beat the prior weekend.

Man, the Cliff Keen Tournament this last weekend was the best I can remember. It is always a good tournament, but this years tops it. Congrats to Rooney for a good showing and the HWT. Blake stayed home @ 125lbs.

Andrassy/staff got another commitment (signed NLI) on Friday. Blake Chrisman from Medina HS @ 184/197lbs (he is wrestling 195lbs in HS). Brother of current starter @ 157lbs, Brady Chrisman. All 3 recruits thus far are 184 or 197.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
I found out what happened to Tim Wallace, he quit school last March and is now a full time electrician. Sorry to see him gone as I thought he would have been a solid 184lber for this year and 3 more.

Andrassy/Staff have signed 4 wrestlers thus far and can’t announce all of them as some final paperwork/process has to be finished. #8 ranked wrestler @ 170lbs, #9 ranked wrestler @ 189lbs and then Chrisman the 285lbs/HWT recruit and 1 more. Sounds like a small but talented class.

Tough road trip to NIU and then Wisconsin. Thought they could have won a few of more of the NIU matches and too many guys got pinned vs Wisconsin.

Some good showings @ Cleveland State Open. I hope Blake can return to the lineup as he has missed a few weeks. 19 day break from Wisconsin dual until SIU Edwardsville dual @ home. (SIU Edwardsville is competing in the Midlands Tournament (Dec 29-30).

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
I’m beginning to lose faith in this program. Things don’t seem to be improving. I don’t follow any sport enough to judge the incoming recruits but what I have seen for the last few years isn’t very entertaining. I know they took a hit when they lost their assistant coach a few years ago but They need to fix that and should have by now.

One thing that seems to happen at Kent is that when they have a good run as in Kilgore winning a NCAA title recruiting isn’t helped. Men’s basketball, gymnastics, wrestling and baseball all have seemed to follow that pattern. They can’t take advantage of the good runs. Golf is the only exception. It has no logical explanation to me unless the good teams happen just by random chance (and only the golf program is really capable of sustaining success).

Additional info on the season ending injuries suffered last year. Monico, Barrerio, & Bolia all were victims. That is why the team had a thin year last season and is up/down this season. The Crawford kid from Canfield decided to play football. 3 recruits, but all are very talented/experienced.

Hoping this long lay-off can allow the guys to get healthy and have a nice 2nd half to the season.

There are always reasons for the team being weak. A few years ago it was youth. When it happens over and over again you have to wonder. I hope your right. I just am not that sure.
