2019 enrollment drop
USM
2018 = 14,509
2019 = 14,133

MSU
2018 = 21,974
2019 = 22,226

Ole Miss
2018 = 23,090
2019 = 22,273

Only State saw an increase. On the surface, doesn't look like the out-of-state tuition drop implemented by Bennett is working to boost enrollment.

when you don't offer many valuable degrees relative to the real world as the cost of tuition continues to rise exponentially, it's a gimme the 'law of diminishing' w/o subsidization will rear it's ugly head....

It looks like we're in real danger of dropping below 14k in the next year or two. We're the smallest we've been since at least 2005, probably longer. I dug back thru the IHL press releases and found these numbers:

2006 - 14,777
2007 - 14,592
2008 - 14,801
2009 - 15,301
2010 - 15,778
2011 - 16,506
2012 - 16,471
2013 - 15,325
2014 - 14,845
2015 - 14,579
2016 - 14,554
2017 - 14,479
2018 - 14,743
2019 - 14,133

I bet if we had kept Jeff Bower and more people donated to the Eagle Club enrollment would have kept climbing. Those are the excuses for everything else.

RE: 2019 enrollment drop
You really need more details to put any meaning to it. How big is the incoming freshman class compared to previous years and what are their credentials (i.e. potential to actually complete a degree)? In what direction is the retention rate going? How many did we graduate last year and how long did they take to get there? If, say, the freshman class is the same size or bigger than before, but it’s offset by a bunch of people who’ve been hanging around for 7 years finally walking across the stage, that’s actually a positive.

I say this every time it comes up, but numbers for numbers’ sake isn’t a measure of the university’s actual health. A huge freshman class, 2/3s of whom don’t become sophomores, is pointless. People finishing bachelor’s degrees & moving on in 4-5 years is better than them continuing to be counted on the rolls for 6+ with nothing to show for it.

RE: 2019 enrollment drop
I know this has no direct relevance to the topic, but when you asked, "How many did we graduate last year and how long did they take to get there?", it brought back a laughable memory for me. I remember decades ago when I arrived on campus as a freshman, my roommate introduced me to his friend who was a senior. Four years later when i graduated, that same guy was still enrolled at USM. There were no gaps when he had stopped attending, he hadn't graduated and was doing post-graduate work, nor was he working on a duel major. On the day I graduated and was driving off campus for the last time, I remember seeing him walking along the sidewalk. As best I can figure, his whole life revolved around student activities- going to football and basketball games, intra-mural sports, and attending organizations. I think the thought of graduating and leaving that all behind- having to get a real job- was absolutely terrifying to him. I have no idea what ultimately became of him. Maybe he's still attending classes as a 60+ year old man.

I do know the HA published an article about the large freshman class last year, but nothing was mentioned this year.

I understand what you are saying, but totals do have meaning. If your total is dropping, that is not a positive indicator.

RE: 2019 enrollment drop
If anyone’s actually curious, it was 2013 that Bennett was hired. I’ve been called an idiot the past few years by some on here for saying enrollment was down. “You obviously haven’t seen the press releases that the past three years have all been our largest ever Freshman class!” they’d say. You just have to actually read the article to see it was the largest class in a certain area, such as Honors College or with a certain ACT score, not numerically.

RE: 2019 enrollment drop
Last year’s freshman class was in fact the largest ever, without any qualifiers. Again, a key number to know is how many are back this year. Poor retention relative to normal rates elsewhere would be a legitimate problem.

Speaking of elsewhere, anybody have the numbers for the other 5 IHL universities? Last year, we had the biggest jump of all state unis with a 1.8% gain vs. 2017. From the numbers in the initial post, we’re in the middle of the “big 3” with a 2.5% drop compared to State’s increase and UM’s 3.5% drop. It’d be interesting to see how the rest are doing and where we fall on that scale.

I blame the admin and board of trustees.

I got a construction engineering tech degree from USM (now it's changed to Construction Management).

When I was there they had built a Master's program and was working out the kinks... MSU had their engineering stuff but several of their staff stated they encouraged their students if they wanted to go into Construction Management, go to USM after getting the bachelor's and go through the cert program (basically the same as the CM degree but just the core classes) could be done in 3-4 semesters..

Next thing I know after I graduate and USM getting the Master's program going MSU starts a Construction Management program (it only makes sense since they are the Engineering school in the state). When budget cuts came, they evaluated both programs and it was either USM lose the Master's program or State ends their program... The BOT is heavy with State alumni.. Anyone guess what got the ax? USM had looked at building a new building and was going to offer Residential vs Commercial emphasis.. Yep axed..

I've met some of their construction guys... They should've stuck to what they know and let USM continue.

I laugh every time I hear how "wonderful" the lottery here in TN is because the money goes to college scholarships. Not that I'm against lotteries, but to think it helps anyone with the cost of tuition is a joke. Over the 7 years my kids were in college, the cost of tuition went up every year (much more that general inflation). And in the years where the amount received from the lottery scholarship was increased, the tuition went up about the same as any other year PLUS whatever the amount of the increase of lottery money. Coincidence? I think not. 07-coffee3

I really believe that once a person becomes a full time student, tuition for that student should not increase as long as they continue to be a full time student and finish within a reasonable number of years (i.e. maybe 5).

If you are referring to the MS in Science and Technology program, that got the ax because very low student interest. Since, USM has added BS degrees in Computer Engineering and Ocean Engineering. USM seems to be doubling down on Marine Sciences.

USM needs to invest in new facilities for it's tech programs. Until that happens, it will struggle to build enrollment in new programs like Computer Engineering. You go to a lot of campuses and the tech buildings are some of the nicest. It's the opposite at USM.
