24 bench points. I like the sound of that.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me either. Maybe he didn't like where we finished in prep?

Why did we not foul near the end of game with 2 fouls to give before one and one before they got in position to shoot.

That sounds like a bench coach error, they are typically in charge of that part of the game.

I wondered the same thing, allowed them to get answers on easy buckets way to quickly in those situations.
The other question i had is how do you call two timeouts in the last minute with the shot clock under 10 and not get a good shot either time? One resulted in a TO and the other the Kai prayer that got waived off.

RE: Campbell (Tuesday, 7 PM)
Kept up with the game online tonight and had a few thoughts, especially given the first two years of the C.B. era.
Firstly, as I look back on the 18-19 season, the Campbell game was kind of a tone setter, which is kind of difficult to think about with it being Game 1. UNCW had a good Campbell team, with one of the nation's best players, on the ropes, but couldn't come out with a win. Close but no cigar kind of became a running theme for much of the season.
Fast forward to last night and to me Campbell is kind of the "actual" season-opener, if you will. J&W was a guaranteed win, UNC was a paycheck. The Camels were the first even matchup of the year. Last year, UNCW loses this game if it plays out in similar fashion. I'm liking the growth from the returners, notably Estime, Toews and Sims, plus the new guys are much further along than I expected, especially the freshmen (I thought Phillips and Dodd would have an immediate impact, but Boggs has been a huge surprise. Didn't know he'd be as good as he's been)
Overall, this team is certainly deeper, more skilled and has much more potential than the previous two with C.B. Getting Gadsden back would take things up another notch, for sure. They won't get through nonconference without some bumps, but there's certainly a chance to be much more competitive and balanced going forward.
Davidson is going to be a big test, especially after losing to Charlotte. They're going to need some guys to step up (solid efforts from Okaruru and Skaggs from beyond the arc would be a good place to start), but overall the direction is trending up.

All fair points, but one thing to keep in mind, there was really only one direction to go from where we were at.......

Touche. Haha. Turning the corner would happen a year after I leave the beat. I'll always have 2016-17.

I'm gonna call BS on that too. We could have stayed exactly like last year or worse. To that end, there would be no end to the criticisms. As it stands, we are making progress (so far) past last year. Obviously, it's only the beginning of the season though and there's a lot of basketball to be played. Point being, "up" wasn't the only direction to go here.

You can't go down when you are at the bottom. That's a fact. I like the direction of things thus far as we have certainly come up from the bottom specifically on D. Looking forward to the next game.

My eyeball test tells me, also, that our D is looking up.
But the fact is that after 3 games we are #295 in the nation in scoring defense, and even the DIII-level "Chefs" lit the scoreboard up pretty well against us. So the jury is still out on just how much improvement has yet to be seen defensively.

I think we all know with our style of play the scoring defense stat is never going to look good. From what I've seen, the 3 point defense has improved with our added length. Davidson will definitely test that though.

RE: Campbell (Tuesday, 7 PM)
I don't think we have enough information to declare that we are up or down yet. We can throw out the Chefs and Heels as evaluation games.
Campbell is the only team i'm willing to use to initiate a conversation, since we play them pretty much every year and we have a past history as a basis.
Campbell beat CCU 75-74, which is a decent win. In that game, here were the stats
Campbell
24-62 for 38.7% fg
12-34 for 35.3% fg3pt
Points in paint - 16
Points off TO's - 18
13 off reb, 18 def reb
Campbell caused 13 TO's by CCU, gave up 48.3% fg and 36.4% fg 3pt
Against UNCW
Campbell shot
44.6% fg
23.8% fg 3 pt
40 points in paint
26 points off TO's
16 off reb, 18 def reb
12 TO's
UNCW
52.1% fg
52.8% fg 3 pt.
7 off reb, 27 def reb
19 TO's
We were tied at 62 at the end of regulation.
If you look at that one game
We had a really nice night on offense with 50%+ overall and from 3
We allowed 40 points in the paint
We held them to 23.8% from 3. Give up 35.3% like they shot against Coastal, and we lose.
We turned the ball over 19 times.
Our defense was good enough to allow us to win. Most teams won't press, so the TO's should be lower in the future. Davidson, for example, usually doesn't create a lot of turnovers. Seven offensive rebounds in a whole game and giving up 40 points in the paint is concerning and points to our lack of size in the post.
I still think a press would really fit this roster and keep us out of haf court defensive situations where our lack of size in the post can be exploited

82, I completely agree on a press (or at least some type of the press). That does seem like the best possible way to offset our size on defense and especially in the post. Sitting in a half court defense against a team like WM with their twin towers and they'll eat our lunch and take the next day's lunch money at the same time. We're going to have to make that team play at a much faster pace and force their bigs to run the entire floor non-stop. If we allow them to play half court sets we're going to be in trouble.

Fair enough. But since - at the end of the day the idea is to have your opponents score fewer points than you, we had better get better than #295 as the season goes on. We are going to have to lock some teams down along the way at some point.
But, I agree that the three point defense looks much better. Davidson will be a real test.

I think that both of you are right. Our 3 point D is better this year and we should start doing some zone pressure 3/4 court. Would like Hawking's thoughts on this too as he knows the best. And, I do mean that sincerely.

I’m with the general consensus on this, if not to press or play zone primarily but just give the opposing offense different looks and don’t let them get comfortable
