Campbell Fighting Camels

The post-Chris Clemons era may not be kind to Campbell, who were picked to finish 7th in the Big South in the pre-season Coaches Poll, but don't tell that to the current squad. The Fighting Camels are off to a nice start in the 2019-20 campaign. Campbell opened their season with a solid 75-74 road win against former Big South foe Coastal Carolina. They then dismantled non-DI opponent Central Pennsylvania, 101-47 in their home opener.

So while we're finally facing a team where we can say we're "punching against our own weight class", it would be easy to see how Campbell might be a road favorite in Tuesday night's clash.

6-4 senior guard Cory Gensler is the player to watch for Campbell as one of two returning starters. He's off to a solid start this season, averaging 12.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.0 apg and 1.0 bpg. He leads the team in all 4 categories. He's also been very efficient, with no turnovers to his credit and shooting percentages of .474 from the field and .429 from three point range.

The scoring has been balanced for the Camels so far, with 6 players averaging at least 7.0 ppg in the early going. 12 players have received at least 9.5 minutes per contest as Campbell looks to stretch out its bench and see what they have. However, The 5 starters have been the same in each of their first contests, with returning starter and 6-3 junior Ja'Cor Nelson and 6-1 junior Jordan Whitfield joining Gensler in the backcourt. The post is manned by a pair of sophomores, 6-6 Cedric Henderson and 6-10 Serbian Milos Stajcic.

Campbell has been great at avoiding turnovers and forcing them out of their opponents, as Gensler hasn't been the only player contributing to a great A:TO ratio. As a team, Campbell has 41 assists to just 16 turnovers, while their opponents are almost 180 degrees in the opposite direction: Just 17 assists and 37 turnovers. The Fighting Camels have 19 steals compared to just 6 for their opponents. In short, don't expect them to "beat themselves".

Campbell is also shooting .408 from three point range while allowing just .308 perimeter shooting from their opponents. Their only noticeable weakness might be in the post, where Coastal Carolina out-rebounded Campbell 42-31 on November 5th.

Interesting. I was expecting to be a slight underdog.

Should be a good one in Trask tonight. Really hope we can see a little more out of Okauru tonight. Don't think we're going to win a lot of these evenly matched games if he's not in double digits. Rebounding shouldn't be an issue tonight and I'm interested to see how our 3 point defense looks against a team that plans to shoot a lot of them

RE: Campbell (Tuesday, 7 PM)
This is a game where we should be able to show some lock down defense if we are capable. If we can, our offense should allow us to actuallly get and stretch a lead to double digits. Would really like to see us get on "a run" where we hold them scoreless and get 8-10 of our own a few times.

If we we truly have a shot at landing in the top 3 of the CAA, this should be a 6 pt+ win.

RE: Campbell (Tuesday, 7 PM)
If the team plays with the same intensity they showed during the UNC game, we should be fine. I agree on needing Okauru to be in double digits, but even if he's not... I'm more appreciative and hopeful of his talents as a lock down defender, especially if we are going to press more with Campbell wanting to walk the ball up the floor. We will have to force them out of that, and it sounds like the game plan is already going that way. Put Okauru on their ball handler and force them to play our pace, that's the only way to get them to make mistakes early in their shot clock. The last thing we should do is allow them to slowly bring the ball up the floor and sit back in our defense and wait for them to find the open three. I'm hopeful that we'll have the legs (deeper bench) and athleticism to stifle that.

Sorry, that was a very long winded way of saying I care more about Okauru's defensive prowess than his offense. We have plenty of guns and firepower on offense. What we lack are good defenders. His intensity on the defensive side of the court could spark the same in others. That's all I actually want from him.

I get that. I'm just somewhat concerned about who's the guy on our team that can go get a bucket when we absolutely need one. A couple of scoring lulls against UNC is what cost us from staying within 15 points the whole game. Granted it was against the best team we'll play this season, but it's still something that I'm worried about. Maybe our go to guy will be by committee this year with our depth. We'll see

I'd say Sims is most likely that guy. He's shown he can hit big deep shots as well as get himself to the bucket. Against CAA competition, I'm willing to bet he's going to be that guy. Toews will create and find ways to get it to Sims. IMO, he's going to be Mr. Reliable this year. Bill was right on him at the beginning of last season. I think Boggs is going to make similar quick progression this year and by next year will be a force as well.

He's showed it so far for sure. Will be interesting to see if he keeps it up.

RE: Campbell (Tuesday, 7 PM)
Philllips has shown that he can take his man off the dribble, get to the paint, and finish at the rim or with a pulll up jumper. If you give him a one on one defense or a pick at the top of the key, he can get into the paint and finish. He has hit 61.5% of his shots and has only attempted one 3 pointer. I actually like that, because it means he is looking to drive and he can finish. He's our second leading scorer at 11.5 ppg in only 15 min per game. Sims averages 22.5 minutes and averages 15.5 ppg. Half of Sims attempts are from 3. I'm glad he is hiitting them, but I still like Philllips to get you points when you have to have them because of his ability to drive.

Phillips is definitely a guy that came to mind for me as well. I just wonder if McGrath will go to him in those type of situations.

We're 24-2 against Campbell at Trask all-time. We haven't lost to the Fighting Camels at home since 1995.

I didn't realize it was THAT one-sided in our building.

I like Phillips a lot. I think we got a diamond in the rough. But, if he is going to take it to the rack, he has to improve his ft shooting. And I have no reason to believe he won't.

Our two best FT shooters so far are 6'8" Linssen who has hit 4-4 and 6'7" Boggs, at 5-6. Phillips has gotten to the line more than anyone on the team with 12 attempts in only 30 minutes of play. Sims is second in attempts with 8 in 45 minutes. I didn't realize Phillips had been to the line the most of anyone. If he can keep driving and hitting at a high percentage in the lane, or draw fouls on the drive, it makes the case that he could really be our go to guy in the clutch. If he became an 80% guy at the line, he'd be a handful. We've been wondering who could drive instead of settling for 3's and jumpers for several years. He may be the one.

He's been pretty damn fearless thus far! Definitely needs to improve the Ft shooting

Less than an hour to tipoff. This is the most exciting game thus far to me, as it will be a more clear metric as to where we are.
