Scott's health status
During the radio broadcast, it was mentioned that Scott suffered a concussion a couple of weeks ago.

Head injuries can have a very adverse on a player's performance. Juan Fernandez had a serious concussion in his sophomore year, and it had an adverse effect on his performances that, unfortunately, persisted even after he was well enough to play again. Trey Lowe's head injury had more debilitating effects.

Even the temporary effects of a concussion could help explain why Scott had few productive stats despite playing 25 minutes in game 1. I'm definitely hoping that it wasn't a severe concussion, but if it was, it might be possible that his play will be affected for some time.

I'm wondering if you've heard anything about this, and what your thoughts are about Scott's disappointing play in the Drexel game.

The HC commented after the game that his play might have had something to do with adjusting to playing his first official game with this squad. I hope it's nothing more than that, but he did play much better with the squad in pre-season games.

Scott didn’t have a concussion. Believe it was Josh, but I will double-check.

Thanks for checking.

I was listening to the broadcast and was shocked when they mentioned the concussion. I believed at the time that they were referring to Scott, in the midst of a short discussion about Scott.

It was just an "aside" comment, and they went into no details.

If you ask me, his performance in games 1 & 2 suggest that something like a concussion might be the cause, because his play has been so completely uncharacteristic of him.

It’s not a concussion. You did see a glimpse of how he see’s the court and his play-making ability in the Morgan State game. His not turning the ball over was impressive, as was his twi steals from players he not guarding. as well. But he does have to get his offensive game together..

Well, if it's not a concussion, that is wonderful news for TUMBB and for him, personally!

Regardless, however, his play has been so unproductive that something appears to be seriously wrong. His performance hasn't even been average D1 level in games 1 and 2. JPL was more productive than Scott in game 2.

If Scott keeps playing like he has for the next few games, he might be replaced by JPL in the core playing rotation, joining Parks at the end of the bench.

Even assuming that he hasn't been injured, the blow to the team has been as serious as it would be if he had been injured.

I can't ask you or anyone to explain what the reasons might be, but whatever they are, I don't think Temple has much of a chance at 20+ wins without Scott playing near his potential.

In Temple’s first game, Temple players didn’t run their half-court offense. Mckie said they were nervous. By not running Temple’s offense that may have thrown him off his game. Part of the reason Scott was 3-11 was because his shooting mechanics on his jump shot was off. I could see that in warm-ups.

I guess if he shot 6-11 rather than 3-11 as he did, no one would question his play.

In warm-ups to the second game, I could see his mechanics were off on some of his jumpers. He did hit his first shot, which was a three-ball, and
it was waved off as another Temple player committed a foul on that play.

He displayed that he knows how to play the game correctly. As there were a number of times he drove to the hoop, and there was no clear path, so he instead found an open shooter. He should have been credited with three assists in 14 minutes of play. He displayed his uncanny court vision, and decision-maker.

While fans were looking for scoring from him, he showed maturity and good decision making. He realizes the importance not turn the ball over, and to make assists. Don’t think in the second game he felt his scoring was necessary for Temple to win the game. I’m glad he played the game correctly.

In his 40 minutes of playing time, he’s had no turnovers. That’s unheard of. He’s worked hard the last year to get there. Everyone who has seen him in practices describe his bb IQ as off the charts. Do think we’ll get to see his full offensive arsenal.

I look at his 40 minutes of playing time as producing six points. his two steals kept opponents from scoring twice, his 2-steals produced to 2-points, his block shot kept Morgan State making a hoop. He passed the ball to three players who scored six points. For me, Scott was very productive in his 40 minutes of playing time, while fans might not think so.

Do think that he and Alani should share the PG responsibilities, as Rose, Nate, nor JPL can do that. Alani and Scott should play together in the back-court at times.

It’s my understanding from the public comments from Temple players and coaches that Scott has been by far in practices Temple’s best offensive shooter and scorer. Hope and expect to see that soon. Assume it must be difficult for him kicking ass in team scrimmages and then having to come off the bench. That’s just conjecture.

RE: Scott's health status
Thanks for the detailed analysis.

I'm glad he's practicing well and still has the right kind of court sense and moves, but very surprised that the mechanics of his shot are suddenly off. That shouldn't happen to an outstanding shooter. I wonder if somebody has tried to change his natural shooting stroke in a misguided way.

Sometimes, it's best to just let a guy shoot the way he shoots the ball, if he has averaged 17 ppg. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If that was to happen to me, I'd be pretty pissed about trying to shoot differently and failing at it.

But if his shooting mechanics are off for some other reasons, it might be necessary to address those other reasons.

You and I both have thought that Scott should be playing ~ 30 mpg, and I'm sure he agrees with that, unless he can't play effectively.

I had suggested that starting him might help, and if that's what it takes to get him back on track, then perhaps it would help to try him out as a starting guard, design some special plays for him to get him on track, etc.

At a time like this, the player needs more support and encouragement, not less. I hope he'll get everything he needs until he starts to perform better in game situations.

RE: Scott's health status
Sometimes players get away from their normal shooting form without knowing it.

I could tell that Scott was off in pre-game of the Drexel game, as his forearm went straight out toward toward the hoop with the ball having little arc, when hand hand shouldhave gone straight up to get the proper arc.

He shoots much better when he gets a lot of arc on his shot. Also, his shooting pocket has to be in the right place, and ball shot with the right tempo. See his highlight video.

From watching in the last two games, I see Nate not looking to pass the ball to him, and when he does , Scott just passes it back. It does not look for his shot nor does he attack the hoop. I’ve never seen him play like thatt. I sense he’s been told to that. If so, Scott is not being told to play his game. It’s my Scott he’s the most gifted offensive player on Temple, and both coaches and players have publicly expressed the same view.

He was outstanding playing for KSU when he scored 22-points in a half against Butler, and also scoring 33-points in his first college start as freshmen, which only a handful of players in college men’s bb have accomplished. He also had lots of high-scoring games against other ntop teams in the nation.

Thank you for starting this dialogue about Scott
