Tufts
Cal-Riverside
UMass

join Arizona St as Top 66 ARWU schools not in the AAU. I would not be surprised if the next AAU additions come from these four schools.

Note: Dartmouth is in the 95-116 ARWU rank category, joining Brandeis, Buffalo, Oregon and Colorado in that category and Tulane (117-137 category) as the worst ARWU-ranked AAU members.

I don't remember who compiles it, but there's another ranking that specifically lists per capita research accomplishments, ie per the number of research faculty at the school. Smaller private universities like Dartmouth and Brandeis look better in per capita rankings, and those rankings put Caltech way ahead of everyone else.

Top 60 ARWU, but not in AAU:

University of California, Santa Cruz
Arizona State
University of Utah

Presumably, these schools are high on the list.

Not surprised by Utah or Cal-Santa Cruz, given their ARWU ranks.

As of the recent additions, Arizona State is the lone remaining ARWU Top 58 school that is not in the AAU.

University of British Columbia would also be on the next list. They are #2 behind Toronto who is in the AAU. Top 25 research university in North America.

Dartmouth is in the AAU.

Looking at this list, it appears that AAU favors big behemoth universities with size and scale.

So my USF, which is big and has invested in research, should be on the path to AAU membership I guess.
Only certain fields of research. They don't count ag research (which is Nebraska's specialty) or public administration (Syracuse's specialty).

AAU is outdated. AG research is very important today. I think D1 could their own version of the AAU, and invite schools in certain areas. AG research is important today more than what the AAU thinks. Research on feeding the people, and convert plants into ethanol. Even marine research is important as well.

I think it's not the type of research, it's whether or not the grants are competitively awarded. A lot of Ag research is earmarked to certain schools rather than competed for.

Colorado is ranked 38th internationally and 25th nationally, tied with Illinois.

Of that list, I’m truly surprised Wake Forest is not yet a member.

I have been given to understand that the reason AAU does not count agricultural research very heavily is that most of it is "earmarked" research and therefore awarded in a non-competitive manner. Whether that is true or not I cannot say.

That is correct. They only count research awarded in a competitive manner.

My apologies for essentially repeating your post. I obviously missed your post when reading the thread, otherwise I would not have posted.

3t. Virginia Tech
6t. UConn
6t. Stony Brook
8t. NC State

Stony Brook is already an AAU member. ARWU rankings are based on total research, while AAU normalizes research for the size of the faculty. Lots of Southern schools are competing for openings (if they arise)…Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, NC State, Georgia, and Florida State all have strong research credentials.

How come UAB doesn't have strong research credentials??

UAB does a lot research per the National Science Foundation website…#44 in the country.

https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/profiles/site?...ce&ds=herd

I don’t know the other metrics metrics used by the AAU.

Wasn't Stony Brook admitted this year, with Miami, USF, and ND?

Without a med school, it's hard to see a path for BC. USNWR rankings don't count for much with the AAU.
