Brady had 3 years of eligibility left when he came here.

It was common knowledge.

Not sure why of the uncertainty of some posters.

Correct. I think this is the case.

If he is a "grass is greener on the other side" guy he will leave. If not he will stay.

If CMN has an ego that needs to be fed, or he has a burning desire to "move up" then, there is nothing for us to do to keep him.

I get the feeling he is really attached to Memphis, this city and the program. He has got it rolling now and can really take it to an even higher level that where we are now.

If you watch the post game press conference, you will see, IMO, a genuine, sincere love for where he is now. He has minimal pressure on him and his staff. He is LOVED by the university and the city and the fans. He is in a great situation RIGHT NOW, and I can't think of any reason to want to walk away. Granted, I don't know him personally, but I know what I see from him in the public, and I just don't think moving on is a priority for him.

If you can't live comfortably on $3 million a year, then you got bigger problems. I would like to think of him as the Mark Few of college football. Plenty of opportunities out there, but he has it good right now. Why change.

hey, just ask Fuente how it working out for him?

Fuente did not like the city of Memphis - or at least his wife didn't. He explicitly stated how he liked the feel of Blacksburg for 'raising a family'.

Fuente could also afford to be picky and, in all actuality, the VTech job is a really nice one and the ACC - besides Clemson - is not exactly the most difficult schedule to have.

We are in the best position we have ever been in to replace him should he choose to leave. I hope he doesn't. But it's not just 4 mill a year to worry about, but the competitive money for staff. I think if we get to 3.75, but have the staff dollars, we have a chance to retain him if we want. I think as long as his contract is competitive with what he is worth, he cares more about making sure he can attract a solid staff.

But if White is graduating, who does he have coming in at QB, and how excited is he about developing another kid from the ground up?

I think I remember reading white can get another year.

I hope so. If White stays, I think that makes it more likely, however miniscully or incrementally, that Norvell sticks around one more year. And i do think this becomes a year to year recurrent concern. Unless Norvell cherry picks his successor here.

Well, he still had to get the waiver to play 4 in 6 years instead of 5. He got that this offseason.

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
I think if Norvell wants to go after a P5 job that is the career path he wants to follow, there is no amount of money that will keep him here. That being said, he's continued the success for our university by leaps and bounds that was started by Fuente. He would have left us better than when he started. We thank him for being a great coach and try to move on to the next one. One of these days we'll figure out a way not to be a stepping stone job but until that time we are who we are. The only variable that changes this is if Norvell is truly happy here and doesn't want to go anywhere else as he has claimed in the past. No one knows but him how much of that is true and how much is coach speak. I think its very telling he didn't sign his last contract extension until after Chad Morris accepted the Arkansas job. No knock on Mike, but he seemed to be waiting to see what happened before he decided to act. Its the nature of the business.

I meant at the end of this fiscal year, when Norvell will actually receive the raise. Wasn't Tubby's a 2-year payout (4 year contract), or was it 3 (5 year contract)?

It was three years remaining.

"Smith had three years remaining on the five-year, $15.45 million contract he agreed to in April 2016, and the contract states Memphis will owe Smith the full amount of money left on the deal."

I don’t know what it will take to keep him, but I know there will be someone on here that says he sabatoged something and claim to have insider information about why we should all hate him.

At least Norvell doesn't hate the community he lives in.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

There's also a clause that allows us to repay the 10MM back over a longer period than the remaining 3 years, basically 1.something each year for 2 or 3 times longer period.

EDIT: over six years, or about $1.625 million per year.

Of course there is, but there is no REALISTIC number. If some billionaire decided to pony up $400,000,000 or $500,000,000 to make us a power in football and we invested an additional $30 - $40,000,000 per year in football including a head coach salary of $10,000,000 guaranteed with a $3,000,000 per for coordinators and $1,000,000 for position coaches with corresponding increases for all aspects of football Norvell would stay , he would have to if he wanted to stay married. Al of this is academic of course , we don't have a Billionaire patron and we cannot compete overall with the financial resource of schools that get $30,000,000 more then us from TV contracts.

What we can do is make it difficult for bottom feeder schools from the B1G , sec and Big12/10 to financially entice our coach. We have done that to a large extent already, we may not pay what they can pay, but Norvell cannot get a 100% raise out of them.

Come on, man. Charlie Strong doesn't make $5M a year: https://footballscoop.com/news/charlie-s...h-florida/

Even still, Strong signed a 5-year contract that to date has not been extended. The bulk of the money was backloaded since Strong was still being paid by Texas through 2018, but even still his total compensation is $2.5 million in 2019, $2.6 million in ’20 and $2.7 million in ’21 — and by the time this November and December roll around, most of his 2019 salary will have already been paid.
