Also, from the latest Qtr report, Roku added another 2 million subscribers and now stands at 29.1 million subs.

I admit I'm far from the cutting edge on streaming, so in what sense does Roku have "subscribers"? E.g., last year I bought a "smart" TV that had Roku on it, and I don't pay Roku anything for that.

Likewise, a couple years ago I bought a Roku device on Amazon for about $30, it connects to an older HDTV that isn't Wi-Fi enabled, and I don't pay any subscription for that either.

Now yes, there are some channels I access via Roku, like ESPN+, that I pay a subscription fee for, but IIRC that goes directly to the channel, Roku doesn't get any of it.

So what am I missing?

Advertising and data. Roku can keep track of what you watch and advertise to you. Plus can can subscribe to certain add ons directly through the Roku channel which im sure Roku gets a cut

I think what they mean by “subscribers” is the number of active devices.
You need an account to active the device.
But yeah Roku does charge for having a channel in the system. Seeing the number of devices Roku now has, it’s no wonder that Apple TV/+ will be available on Roku devices.

PSVue's not dead (yet)...just for sale.

You mean a large, multinational corporation bought up a successful smaller company and proceeded to ruin it? Shocking!

The name is dumb and let's be honest there is no excitement around video consoles anymore. Everyone knows they cost hundreds of dollars and will be outdated in a few years.

We are in the midst of a new round of entrants in the streaming markets that are lower cost than the OTT but with category killer ability (Disney, ESPN+, AppleTV). These 65 dollar OTT packages are going to feel some pressure as nobody cares about a full cable replacement.

Man that sucks. Used PSVue for a bit and it was good. But the letter they posted... ugh.

"Today we are announcing that we will shut down the PlayStation Vue service on January 30, 2020. Unfortunately, the highly competitive Pay TV industry, with expensive content and network deals, has been slower to change than we expected. Because of this, we have decided to remain focused on our core gaming business."

Blaming other things when a good portion of the reason for your downfall is your own actions (inaction) is crap.

Yeah, I had them before and then raised the rates higher than I want to pay for. Switched to DirecTV Now/ATT Now but then they raised their rates so now I am with Philo.
If ATT Watch Tv was on Roku I would probably be with them.

I guess I will remove Vue from the OP since it no use of signing up.

In the article it mentions that ATT Now will raise rates $15/month on their packages next month. The base package rate will now be $65/month.
I’ll update when it happens.

I'm guessing no other platforms offer the picture in picture deal that Vue had?

Cord Cutters news is reporting that AT&T Watch TV will likely be shutting down. They didn't have any of the major sports channels but it was the cheapest way to get the Turner channels

Interesting to see if they do. That would bolster Philo. AT&T seems to be doing some major restructuring in regards to their TV platforms. They never offer WatchTV on Roku which is a big mistake. Makes you wonder why they started this at all if they are going to give little effort to make it work.

It was a concession to the Feds to get the merger through.

One of the things they promised was a low cost bundle

An Analysis of TV OTT Platforms
Got a email a bit ago that said my Hulu with live TV will be going up $10 per month starting December 18th. Guess it's time to look at YouTube TV again or some other options.

Sling holding the line on budget pricing. They get made fun of for being tough on carriers but this is their only line of business so you know they are profitable. Kudos to them for their strategy

Viacom Buys Pluto.tv

This is going to be something interesting that could change online streaming. Viacom that owns Nick, Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount, CBS, Desilu Production, Star Trek and all that will still have ad supported content, maybe some of it under pay content could force Netflix and them to offer ad supported free movies and tv shows. We may see more online college sports like C-USA, MWC, FCS and other levels under ad support. Big Sky Conference Network gets a share of the ad revenues like the other channels. This might work than ESPN+ and them. They could be losing Warner Brothers content that AT&T bought them out.
