What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
Assuming everything else is equal.

He makes $2.6 million now.

I expect Memphis can get to maybe $3.2 million.

What will a program need to offer to beat Memphis and make it worth Norvell to leave?

$3.5 million? Is that the starting point?

We better come up with a minimum of 4 mill. Maybe 5.

There is probably not a number we can keep him at. He can’t win a national championship here.

What we need to do is keep making good hires. This job should be super attractive to any up coming coach now. That is what Fuente, Norvell, and the administrative have done. That will be their legacy.

TBH he can't win a natty at OM, Arky, MSU, Illinois, or about any other of the 110 FBS teams that aren't bluebloods.

https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/

If you want to keep Norvell based on money it will take , 10 million per year MINIMUM

Norvell would need $4 to $5,000,000 per and his assistants need to be at least on par with weak sister sec schools like S-Caroina Ole Miss and Arkansas https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salarie.../assistant $5,000,000 is a starting point.
AND
Ole Miss/ Louisville /S-Carolina Spend over $700,000 recruiting in football (above board) and we spend less than $300,000 as far as I can tell.

Finishing the IPF quickly with no more "design delays" would help.... thanks TBOR

So when you say how much it would take , IMO we would need to make our job really the equivalent of a lower level sec/big12 team in not just head coaches salary but Assistant salaries, support staff salaries., etc. I think it is a tall order and competing with Bama, OhioSt and the like is a pipe dream --- it may be a pipe dream to compete monetarily with Ole Miss/S-Carolina/Louisville considering their $30,000,000 per year head start.... 03-pissed

We probably need to pay him enough to make it difficult for a bottom dweller to think about paying more than us. Keep in mind he just turned down a raise in order to keep his buyout at $500,000

Maybe it's not entirely about money

Correct. I think this is the case.

If he is a "grass is greener on the other side" guy he will leave. If not he will stay.

Holgerson's making $4M at Houston. That was the last major G5 contract. I'd anticipate it'd take something similar to that.

But, his decision will probably come outside of money. Most P5 programs can pay him similarly to whatever we offer. If he finds an opportunity for him to majorly succeed, he'll go. If not, he can continue to stay here and build his reputation. If he goes, hopefully our leadership can make their next great hire.

Just remember when you throw out these numbers. What ever we pay him, when ever he does decide to leave we will be stuck at close to that number for the next coach. May get him for a little less but not anywhere near what we originally paid Norvell.

As Herbstreit said on the broadcast Saturday night, I hope Norvell stays at Memphis for a long time.

If/when CMN leaves, I hope Rudd and the search firm can catch lightning in a bottle for a 3rd time.

I think the big thing is increasing the salary pool for his assistants.

Not true at all.

If Memphis hires another "up and coming" coordinator, he will make significantly less.

Urban Meyer made $7.6MM last year and Ryan Day makes $4.5 (60% of the salary).

Hugh made $5mm at OM, Luke makes $3.1MM.

Basically look to pay 60% for a coordinator.

I'm so glad our GameDay turnout was magnificent! Norvell even called himself a 'Memphian' in one of his statements to the media. Calkins pointed that out.

(I'm thinkin' Gameday turnout and attendance kinda made-up for us booing his QB choice in the LB.)

Let's face it, Memphis is a great launching pad and training ground for up-and-coming coaches.

I say we pay 8 mil more (divided between him and his assistants) and he stays awhile longer. lol I mean his buyout is 500K. 500K 500K 500K let that sink in.

You'll have to check with Fred, Bill, Brad and few others.

FedEx stock was selling for $220/share a year ago, today it's around $160.

Walmart stock was selling for $102/share a year ago, today it's around $117.

Macy's stock was selling for $37/share a year ago, today it's selling for about $16.

Fred and Brad may not be in a giving mood.

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
$4m would be a little more than a 50% increase ... That with a 50% increase for Asst Coaches should be a MAX offer with a 5 yr contract and a $ for $ buyout on years left ... Agreed that we need to ramp up the IPF and do what it takes to be in it at the start of Fall camp 2020 ... Hopefully the success and support he has received here will go a long way to retaining him .... The grass isn't always greener ... Just look at Scott Frost and a few others who have jumped from comfortable Group 5 jobs to Power 5 jobs ... More have failed than those who have succeeded .... The grass isn't always greener ...

Clay Travis quote the Vegas odds on who would be the next coach at FSU this morning. Norvell wasn't in the Top 10 of the odds makers.

For a low level P5, like the bottom teams in the SEC west, I wouldnt leave unless they were willing to go $4.5M to $5.5M. When the next round of major P5's have an opening, he's a top target and he can get what Herman got at Texas.

Thats probably why he's not at Arkansas now. And I'm not sure Arkansas has the donors ready to line up and payoff Morris, while they are still paying off Builema, and are ready to drop nearly $5million per year on Norvell.

RE: What's the salary number to keep Norvell?
We have a little more money now. The new media contract. Tubby and Pastner payouts are up. Increasing attendance in both major sports.

But not a lot. We hired an extra fb assistant this year. Penny is due a raise. The AD had a couple of jobs open that had to be filled.

I'm thinking we go to $3M and let him keep the buyout low. We also kick in another $300k for the assistants pool. That +$700k is probably about all we can do right now.

Unless we make the Cotton Bowl. If we get that, I'd say renegotiate based upon how much of the payout is left after expenses. Cotton Bowl payout is $4M per team. Not sure what the conference rules are for bowl distribution, but the year after UCF went to the Peach Bowl, they got about $2.5M more than we got. If we made the Cotton, and received an extra $2.5M, give Norvell & staff $1.5M of that (after bonuses).

If he gets above $3.5M salary though, his buyout needs to increase.
