Yeah, no. They had 3 of the best SP and 3 of the top 20 hitters. They won for the same reason any NBA team wins, star players.

But you know they with all their other pieces not the normal type of team that we've seen with analytics. Very much a throw back type of team.

I think it's really funny that for 2nd time in 4 years- the NL has really benefitted from the DH in AL parks. Schwarber in '16 and Howie this year(5-16 with homer and walk and 3 rbi).

RE: 2019 MLB Thread
one thing that is interesting- that pitch that Kendrick hit out to give the Nats the lead for good.. That was one hell of a good pitch....

saw Kendrick had seen 51 pitches there this season and 5 singles...
saw Harris had thrown that pitch there 144 times this season and had allowed only 7 hits.

Question RE: 2019 MLB Thread
Heard the Nats won the WS. Congrats. Didn't have time to watch any of it this year. Maybe next year if the Braves get in it. Now, let's enjoy the offseason (and Hockey- the other of the two major sports--Go Knights!)

But apparently I wasn't alone:
Nationals-Astros was least-watched Game 7 this decade, but the ratings news isn't all bad

An interesting take on Gerrit Cole not pitching in Game 7.

That's not a good take. That's like saying the Raptors should have benched Kawhi Leonard in the NBA Finals because they were pretty sure he was going to leave Toronto after the finals.

When you have the chance to win it all right in front of you, doing everything you can to win the title is far more important than worrying about whether the guys who win it are going to be back next season.

Something interesting, 2014 Detroit Tigers starting 5 rotation all have WS rings. Verlander, Price,Porcello, Scherzer and Sanchez all got a ring, none with Detroit.

so the Gold Gloves came out today....

the pitchers the funniest...
for AL Mike Leake won even though he was traded to NL Arizona.
for NL Zack Greinke won even though he was traded to AL Houston

don't know that I've ever seen that before.

And both pitched for the Diamondbacks. :)

Either way, the Dbacks have/had a Gold Glove pitcher on the team.

Mike Rizzo is one of the best baseball scouts in the game. Great to see him win a WS after getting put on the hot seat last year. For all of his successes, I still can't for the life of me understand how or why he hired Dusty Baker in an attempt to get over the hump. They have a keeper in Dave Martinez.

they needed something personally different after the disaster that was Matt Williams. As good as Davey is- Williams was that bad.....

Rizzo- man at times I haven't been sure. Do love that he built from the rotation on. We end the 2010's with a dominant rotation.... hahahaha

Two months into the season we were talking about whether it was just Martinez or both Martinez and Rizzo who had to be fired.

funny going back and looking at things.....

I really think the series that saved Davey's job was the Dodger series in May. The Nats were real close to panic mode, and had the day off on Monday afterwards. Really think if Nats get swept, there's a manager change on the off day.... Nats got a split- and the rest as they say was history.....

deGrom and Verlander win Cy Young. Close vote. Think Cole is happy for his ex-teammate?

Ryu and Scherzer tied for 2nd (Ryu got the only other 1st place vote); Strasburg and Flaherty tied for 4th.

actually they updated- Ryu 2nd, Scherzer 3rd, Flaherty 4th, and Strasburg 5th....

Flaherty 3 votes away from Scherzer for 3rd.

Based on some of those votes I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that the BBWAA struggles with their maths. One guy in Philly thinks Kershaw had a better season than Ryu (and Buehler, and Scherzer, and Corbin, etc...)

yeah, if the season ended August 15. But bad for Kershaw, it didn't...

It amazes me how folks are so defensive of Kershaw right now... He was not a good pitcher the last quarter of the season...

I hate to say it, but I think Kershaw in 2-3 years is just like King Felix or Lincecum....

So how much are MLB folks rooting for Mike Trout to win the MVP over Bregman?

I think you're being really generous here. Kershaw was pitching well but was still the third best pitcher on his team on August 15; certainly not third in the NL. Ryu's ERA was almost HALF of Kershaw's at that point.

Quote:I hate to say it, but I think Kershaw in 2-3 years is just like King Felix or Lincecum....

The guy is still a perfectly serviceable #3 or #4 pitcher. It's definitely sad to see the decline but he hasn't (yet) dropped of the cliff like those guys.
If he can stay healthy it seems like he can continue to be a 3-4 fWAR guy for at least the next couple years to the end of his contract. The question is what happens in 2022 after the end of his current deal. Wouldn't be surprised to see him retire at that point, but if healthy I also wouldn't be surprised to see him sign a short term deal with the Rangers so he can go back to Texas. I'd obviously prefer him to retire a Dodger but it's hard to imagine LA signing him at that point.

Does anyone think the Astros sign stealing fiasco is a big deal?

Sign stealing has been part of baseball since the world was young. This is a pretty egregious example (and highlights one of the reasons teams are supposed to keep technology out of the dugout). They should (and likely will) receive a minor punishment but no, it's not scandalous.

Of course, they definitely need hand over the WS trophy to the Dodgers.

I get that, but if the base runner on 2nd can crack the catchers' code, its fair game. Having a high power telescope and instant information relay back to the dugout to me is too far.

To Cy Young voters who look at ERA a lot- he'd have been #2 on the Dodgers. Ryu 1.45, Kershaw 2.63, Buehler 3.31... I think he'd have been #3 or 4- with Max in there as #2- with deGrom and him fighting it out.....

I do think we saw that Cy Young voters still look at ERA a lot. Look at where Ryu was compared to Strasburg and Buehler as a great example.

I kind of disagree with you on long term with Kershaw.
fWAR/162
2016 6.85
2017 3.98
2018 3.31
2019 3.09

I think we're going to see in the next few years either his skills continue to decline or him getting injured more(or both). I wouldn't be shocked if he's a 2 WAR guy even next year.
