With the addition of the other teams, the MAC rankings are going to take awhile to decipher. Rooney is 3rd at 133 and McNally has dropped down to 174 and is ranked #1. Lots of new faces for KSU listed. Nick Monico, unfortunately, doesn’t appear to be returning.

Interesting, thanks for the info Lambert58. Did Monico go to Edinboro or maybe couldn't return from injury? I don't have a subscription to Flo, so I couldn't see the details. The kentstatesports.com website hasn't been update to show the 2019-2020 roster yet.

Sorry, I always forget I have a subscription. Here’s the projected lineup:

125 Blake Fresh 14th
133 Rooney Senior 3rd
141 Komara Soph 12th
149 Ciotti Soph 13th
157 Chrisman Fresh 14th
165 Limongi Fresh 15th
174 McNally Junior 1st
184 Mast Senior 13th
197 McCracken Soph 9th
285 Berthold Soph 11th

Team: 12th. Only CSU, Bloomsburg, and SIUE are ranked lower.

I haven’t heard anything on Monico and incoming freshman aren’t listed yet at most schools.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Thank you Lambert58. Interesting projected lineup. I would think Jake Ferri would be the starter @ 125lbs, unless Blake is that good coming in as a true freshman. I would also think that Tim Wallace would be the starter @ 184lbs over Mast, as he had a heck of a redshirt season. McCracken and Berthold should be better than what they have them ranked. That hurts that Monico won't be back.

No problem. I’m not sure of the entire basis for the rankings, but I imagine that there was some input from the coaching staff. Perhaps Ferri will red-shirt and that’s why Blake is listed as the starter? He had a great high school career but it’s a brand new game at this level. I also believe Wallace will be the starter, but Mast deserves to be named the #1 prior to the start of the season due to him being a senior, etc.

Good news. Really need to hit a few homeruns on the middle weights.

Those are definitely our weakness. Hopefully some of this year’s recruits can help out.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
The roster has been updated to include the newest members of the team and it’s a giant class of incoming freshman - 18!

In addition to those that we already knew about (Blake, Boyle, Gould, Langguth, Liamongi, Mutschler, Neu, Russell, Sherman, Torres), the following are also listed:

Sean Billups; Columbia, Maryland (174) who finished 1st in 2019 and 3rd in 2018.

Brian Caldwell; Shawsheen Valley Tech, MA (141) who was ranked 12th his senior year at 132 in the New England Regional rankings. He wrestled with Ferri.

Mike Caniglia; Hudson, Ohio (174) who was 39-10 his senior year, DNP at state tournament.

Nick Colasurdo; Center Valley, PA (141) who was severely injured his sophomore year and finished his senior year at 32-7, DNP at state tournament.

Mason Karpinski; Greenville, PA (157) who finished 46-5 his senior year with a 4th place finish at states.

Wyatt Maturin; Houston, Texas (125) who placed 3rd at 106 his senior year. He also had a significant injury during his career but finished 2nd at his class in the USA Wrestling Preseason National tournament.

Ed Suber; Tallmadge / St Vincent’s (149) who finished 7th in 2017, but I couldn’t find a state result for him in 2019.

Dylan Wellbaum; Lake Orion, Michigan (184) who finished 2nd in 2019. He is also listed on the roster for Adrian College. I imagine he was signed very recently.

Of these late signings, Billups, Karpinski, Maturin, and Wellbaum show the most potential to make an impact.

The schedule was released on Facebook but not the KSU site.

The wrestling season starts on Thursday!

Nice. Should be interesting to see who wins some of the weights tonight.

I watched a FloWrestling (Zeb Miller) video of some interviews with Andrassy and some footage of practice. During those videos Jim said that last year was the craziest year of his coaching career with 5 or 6 (I can't remember which) season/wrestling career ending injuries. JA mentioned that Monico had a major knee injury, Barreiro suffered a shoulder injury, & Billy Bolia I believe had a knee injury and those ended all 3 of their wrestling careers. Monico & Barreiro would have placed at MAC and qualified for NCAA. Kyle Conel had a knee injury, that JA said Nick Bedelyon won the MAC and was an All American with, so he could have wrestled with it, but chose not to. JA also mentioned that Conel seemed like he didn't want to be in Kent all of last year and he wishes him well at Penn State this season.

Blake must be really talented to be projected as the starter over Jake Ferri (redshirt junior).

The only question mark I have is that Tim Wallace isn't on the roster and JA didn't mention him in those videos. He had a heck of redshirt season last year, so maybe he got hurt at the end of the year? He wrestled a lot of matches, so it doesn't seem like it happened at the beginning or middle of the season.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Watched some of the wrestleoffs tonight.

HWT - didn’t have a match, not sure if there is an injury or what?

125lbs - Ferri won against Blake pretty handily

133lbs - didn’t see this match, I can’t imagine Rooney didn’t win

141lbs - didn’t see this match, I would think it would have been Leno vs Simpson

149lbs - Komara won 4-3 vs Senz

157lbs - Chrisman won by a lot vs Karpinksi

165lbs - I think Byland won by a few vs Limongi, but the feed froze for a bit so not sure

174lbs - McNally won by quite a few

184lbs - Mast & Andrassy were in a battle and not sure who won

197lbs - McCracken won like 16-2 or so vs Boyle

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
I’m not sure of Wallace’s status. The Flo announcer said hello to him during the broadcast so ???

Ferri over Blake easily at 125. Ferri will be the starter.
Sherman over Maturin at 125. My guess is Blake is the best of the 3 freshman.
Rooney over Gould at 133 on the strength of a TD. Gould (freshman) wrestled well against a 5th year senior that is ranked.
Simpson over Mutschler at 141. For a freshman, Mutschler was aggressive and took his shots.
At 149, Komara is the starter but we saw Colasurdo beat Senz. Hopefully, Komara isn’t injured.
At 157, Chrisman beat Karpinski. We are young at this weight and it may be an issue.
At 165, Byland (junior) defeated Limongi (freshman). Another weight class that has youth and questions.
McNally dominated Torres at 174 as he should have.
184 appears to be crowded with Hinkle, Mast defeating Bates, Andrassy. Andrassy wrestled 157 last year. Huge jump in class.
McCracken dominated true freshman Boyle at 197. He looked huge and with his summer performance, expect good things from him this season.
285 No match; don’t know why.

This year’s squad will be carried by McNally, McCracken and Rooney. It’s a shame that Gould is at Rooney’s weight because he could contribute this year. Ferri, Simpson and Komara have to step up or this season could be ugly. With only two seniors, it’s an uphill battle already. Hopefully, they can also avoid last season’s injury debacle. 157, 165, 184 and 285 are big question marks.

Thanks Lambert58. Any idea on Leno Ciotti @ 141lbs? I would have thought he would be in the mix to start after redshirting last year.

He tore his meniscus last season so I’m not sure if he’s 100%.

Lost 8 out of 10 matches to Edinboro. Rooney ran out of gas (or was sick) and got routed in the third period after building up a lead prior to. McNally was up and got caught and was pinned. McCracken did win. I didn’t have the guts to hang around and see how we would do against Mercyhurst and Ashland. I know it’s only one match but it wasn’t a good start to the season. I believe the score was 29-6 give or take a point.

Shutout Mercyhurst northeast and beat Ashland decisively. Neither team is near a good as Edinboro but at least we did what we should do.

RE: Wrestling 2019-2020
Last season, we lost to Ashland so I guess a win against them is good, but they’re still a D2 school...Mercyhurst isn’t even close to D1 so no surprise...The loss to Edinboro is very disappointing, especially given that both Rooney and McNally lost matches they should have won. Last year, they both won by pin (12 points). As team leaders this year, they simply can’t give up 9 points. Simpson lost to Ciotti again. Last season, Ferri had a major over Rodriguez but Blake lost to him 2-0. Komara lost even though he won last year. I thought he was in control of his match but he faded just like Rooney did. Other than McCracken’s win over a ranked opponent and Chrisman winning, it was more of the same at the other weights. Blech.
