Maybe an upgrade, because Liberty goes bowling if they get 2 wins out of Rutgers, UMass and NMSU, who are a combined 2-19. UConn can be relied upon for an easy win in 2020.

............

Why is Ole Miss helping UConn, that's a different question.

About those two points, I would add that for Virginia, UConn is also better because losing to them would be slightly less embarrassing than losing to Liberty. Nothing worse for a P5 flagship than to lose to an in-state school from a lesser tier.

As for Ole Miss, it is no skin off their teeth who they pay the $1 million (or whatever it is) to, and for all the badgering they get around here, UConn is a bigger brand name than MTSU.

That assumes UConn is playing for free. Which, now that I think about it, is a viable assumption. Middle Tennessee's administration is happy--they're probably collecting 2 checks instead of one.

Being wrong means I have to reevaluate "facts" and assumptions. Does a body-bag game vs UConn really help Ole Miss at the gate vs any other FBS body-bag game? Is playing UConn sorta-kinda like playing Duke or Kansas--awful football, but some halo effect from basketball? (Duke has been good lately, but analogies are hard.)

My assumption from the article is that UConn is playing at Ole Miss for free, the buy money is going to MTSU only.

And yes, I think there is a halo effect generally. The typical Ole Miss fan is much more likely to have heard of UConn, because of hoops, than it is to have heard of MTSU, and UConn just looks a bit "bigger time" on the schedule because of the name. Granted, we're talking small margins here, to Ole Miss it is a body bag game either way, but to the extent there is a margin, it favors UConn.

RE: UConn's 2020 schedule almost complete
@johnbragg - kudos to you for eating some humble pie

From the beginning, I did not understand the angst and multiple threads from a few posters about UConn leaving the AAC for the Big East (returning home) and football independence. I never saw it as a return to FCS or a football program that was going to be dropped. When Liberty announced its move to FBS independence in February of 2017, it had a similar challenge of creating an FBS schedule for the 2018 season. That schedule was announced 3 months later. During the process, there was very little information available or known outside of the few in the ADs office that worked on the schedule. I am sure that UConn was aware of the timing of Liberty's first FBS schedule creation and if they needed any help in creating their schedule for next year, the blueprint was probably shared.

Liberty does not need UConn, more independents or a conference to have success in scheduling. I've seen a number of threads and posts that make it look like football independents cannot survive unless there is a new conference created or half a dozen new independents are added. Obviously, when there are more independents, it is helpful and can make some things easier. Personally, I'm glad UConn has made the move to football independence and hope they have success in this transition. Now that most of the schedule has been released, I think the response from the UConn faithful will be positive and it will be well received by recruits. Scheduling for future years will improve. Immediately, there are no bowl tie-ins, but that has not been a concern for UConn recently. When they become eligible again, I believe there will be bowl opportunities.

Details have not been released, but I expect that the Liberty / UVA game has been moved to a future date and not removed entirely from the schedule.

So, UConn had prior talks with the Big East years ago (while in the AAC). This would align with reports from several college basketball commentators (including those on ESPN) that echoed and reported that belief.

"The AAC’s new TV contract, one of the reasons it was so intent on leaving the conference, would have pushed many UConn games onto ESPN-Plus."

Once again, the deciding factor that UConn chose to bolt: the AAC TV deal.

"UConn’s guarantee games in the future will come mostly against top teams from the SEC and Big Ten. It will be balanced with home-and-home series with mid-level Power 5 teams and regionalized with expected annual games against Boston College, UMass, Syracuse and Army. BYU is expected to be a regular opponent."

This type of annual schedule will be as good, if not better in some years, than what UConn had in the Big East. This will immensely help with a TV contract and recruiting.

The previous talks also would tend to end any debate that the new TV deal was the straw that broke the camels back. Clearly, UConn had already decided it wanted back in the Big East years before the new TV deal was even negotiated.

C'mon man, that's called planning for future scenarios. It's the exact thing that so many said UConn did not do when they left the AAC.

On the other hand, I don't think it's a coincidence that UConn announced it was leaving the AAC shortly after the new TV deal was announced.

We don't know what caused UConn/Big East talks to break down a few years ago, but it seems likely that since then, UConn was waiting to see if the new AAC deal would result in exposure and money that was too good to turn down.

So in that sense, I think it is fair to say the TV deal played a significant role. I seriously doubt that if Aresco actually had produced money that was in the "P5 ballpark" that UConn would have left.

I know that there were several rumors of discussions between UConn and Big East over the past few years, so the AD's comments appear to confirm that those really did take place.

Granted, my interpretation is the the new TV deal confirmed the financial exposure for UConn, so they really couldn't leave until they saw the final figures. It's not so much that it was the straw that broke the camel's back because it was supposedly a terrible deal (which it isn't), but rather that the TV deal wasn't so *great* that it would compensate for the long-term positives of being in the Big East. If each AAC school was going to make $20 million in TV money per year, then UConn wasn't going to leave. When the AAC TV deal didn't represent a material change to UConn's financial condition, then that is what sealed the deal. The Big East TV deal is actually P5 level for *basketball* (which is the distinction that seems to be needed to be pointed out every time that people try to compare it to the football/basketball AAC deal), so UConn is looking at it from the standpoint that they can get to TV revenue neutral or better with an independent TV deal for football as a Big East member for other sports compared to being a full AAC member.

EDIT: it looks like quo made the exact same point while I was typing this.

TBH, I think most of the angst was not directed at UConn but to certain posters in this forum (who root for other programs) who constantly post how great UConn is and how their troubles was solely the fault of the AAC and programs nobody cares about (ie. taking a direct shot at and drawing the ire of fans of schools in the conference). This is what leads to the piling on.

The UConn, UMass and Army scheduling is a nice mini bus league and Liberty's AD was UMass AD for a time so all that does help.

Wow, home games versus UMass, Indiana, Liberty, Army, and Maine, with little chance to qualify for a singular bowl game (at best). Who’s buying season tickets for that?

UMass, Maine and Army will definitely be draws to UConn alumns and residents of Hartford.

Maybe people underestimated the general desire of college ADs to cooperate with each other. Their primary job is obviously to do what's in the best interest of their own employer, but aside from that, most of them generally don't mind accommodating another school on things like scheduling.

I believe that from the eyes of a UConn fan, it's better than any G5 conference schedule. Once again, it's irrelevant how good UCF, Houston, Memphis or other AAC teams might be on-the-field in a particular season. Essentially, if UConn isn't playing a P5 school or a regional Northeast-based team, all G5 schools are interchangeable to them. Similar to BYU, UConn sees themselves as a P5 institution (and note that institution is different than wins/losses) that is shut out of the P5 for the foreseeable future, so the branding of being independent as actually being better on the pecking order compared to being a G5 member. That might be arrogant, but I believe that's how they see it.

RE: UConn's 2020 schedule almost complete
Scheduling is going to be a little bumpy these first few years but if they can get UMass, Liberty, Army, NMSU, and an FCS annually that’s 5 of their 12 games.

I think they will be able to get some 2 for 1s with the P5 because a loss to Indy UConn always looks better than say a C-USA school and revenue wise I think the P5 makes more in two home games with zero expenditures for buy games compared to paying for 3 G5 rent-a-victims.

UConn is also in a position where they can try to lure schools in by playing at Foxboro, Yankee Stadium, or MetLife. I could see playing one of these types of games a year becoming an annual thing.

EDIT: it looks like quo made the exact same point while I was typing this.

Talks most likely broke down because UConn, at the time, was able to wait out its current situation and hold its hand until it came time for the AAC to show all of its cards. For UConn, it would have been financially irresponsible to move earlier than it did; with them knowing everything they did now, the timing was right for them to move when they did.

UConn's athletic budget was being temporarily supported and financed heavily from the exits fees from the departing Big East members, which allowed it to continue to spend and operate like a true power conference member (like it had been, and was being paid like, in the Big East). The "talks" likely broke down because UConn was probably unable to surpass those payouts (in the immediate term) by moving to the Big East. With the details of the new AAC TV deal, UConn - no matter what - was going to be making less than it had been in the AAC (between the TV revenue and exit fees); couple that with the perception of the AAC to the Big East, the cut-down in travel, and the details of the new AAC TV deal, the timing was right this past summer for UConn to make the move official.

Just like some believe it was Tulane's fault that the C7 left and restarted the Big East, many will point to the AAC TV deal as why UConn left; however, there were many, many more factors in play that led up to both situations. The AAC TV deal, like Tulane's addition, was simply the last newsworthy item that occurred before a move occurred. Fans will always group the two together.

Thats fair and I see your logic, and I don’t totally disagree with you. I just don’t see how this is beneficial to them. Independence isn’t working that great for BYU, they’re lucky to be above .500 and go to some random bowl. UConn will probably never get to 6-6 soon and won’t have ESPN backing like BYU. No one is going to give them good money for games against Maine and Liberty.

This is a great point. Remember that ADs have to deal with lots of scheduling arrangements for lots of sports beyond football and basketball, so they have a lot of working relationships with each other. Schools like Notre Dame and Michigan might have the luxury of taking a principled stand against each other in scheduling (and even they eventually relented on that front), but the vast majority of schools are going to have several "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" situations in multiple sports every year. If any of these ADs that are helping UConn today end up needing, say, a marquee men's or women's basketball opponent down the road to help open a new arena or sell season tickets, then UConn's AD is going to remember who helped him out. I think a lot of us as fans look at the schools as monoliths, but a lot of scheduling arrangements still come down to personal relationships between ADs and/or coaches.
