Thoughts on the NCAA?
So, with California doing what California does politically, we have our first genuine impetus for something that could shatter and dissolve the NCAA as we know it. So the question is simple ... since the axe is being wielded by a political entity ... and political entities respond to the vox populi .... let's take the temperature of the public on the NCAA.

There are 3 team apparel I feel the most pride in wearing: NIU, Chicago St, & the NCAA. Love the NCAA!

As a UMass fan I'm not sure which bucket you think I should vote in. We're technically not G5 and we're definitely not P5 or FCS.

This is the same jerk who was caught cheating using steroids which is banned substance for many sports including the pros. He deserved to have been disqualified by the NCAA. That is why he wore that t-shirt because he was caught cheating.

The presidents of the colleges own the NCAA, let them own it. Sooner or later, the truth that the athletes will be need to be compensated will happen.

I chose ‘reform’ but would also be fine with died/replaced. I mean, you have to have some regulatory body, but the NCAA in it’s current form is just too inconsistent and - by design - does not really look out for the athletes.

RE: Thoughts on the NCAA?
Something has to change. In a perfect world, athletic departments would be completely disassociated from the university and run by booster clubs and alumni associations and the entire book of bylaws tossed out and rewritten to reflect this new reality, but universities aren't going to want to give up that control. The foundation's antiquated and it shows. I think a lot of the changes that are being proposed only serve to fatten the wallets of corporate interests rather than address any actual moral or philosophical issues at hand.

Anyone here here believe this sort of thinking is confined to UNC only?

PS, if anyone here has a subscription to The Athletic, would appreciate a summation of the ADHD/concussion story. Thanks

Of course, this is nothing compared to the whopping amounts the amateur athletes on these bowl-bound teams will be paid (not "paid"?) Like, maybe a Chipotle gift card and/or Xbox.

The gist of it is that Tatos discovered that North Carolina was diagnosing a much-too-high percentage of its athletes with ADHD. Here's why they might do that:

Quote:While the total number of UNC football players receiving ADHD medication is unclear, a 2009-2010 end-of-year report showed that 16 of 23 freshman football players (70 percent) were prescribed medication.

According to the UNC documents Tatos reviewed, a diagnosis of ADHD often came with special accommodations, including personal note-takers, untimed tests and prescriptions for stimulant medications such as Adderall or Ritalin, which are otherwise banned by the NCAA as performance-enhancing drugs.
https://theathletic.com/1261858/2019/10/...-research/

And the connection to the papers authored by a UNC professor on the links between football and concussions is that Tatos says the conclusions of those papers are dubious because they failed to control for whether or not a UNC football player in the study had been diagnosed with ADHD (and was taking Adderall or Ritalin).

At a certain point you just have to give people what they want, and let the chips fall as they may. you cant always fight to protect something what doesn't want protection.

The NCAA is just an athletic association though. It isn’t some independent body, it is comprised of its members which are all universities. If they want to change the rule they can just vote for it. The issue is universities themselves are split on the issue.

RE: Thoughts on the NCAA?
The NCAA is not just D1. D2 and D3 also have similar rules. If you attack D1 and their rules? You have to also include D2, D3, NAIA, USCAA, NCCAA ans ACCA. ACCA is like some USCAA schools who are not accredited by approved higher ed in their area. It was why schools like Virginia-Lynchberg and Concordia Alabama could not get into the NAIA since they lost their accreditation. Now back to the topic. I made a thread on how the NCAA with USCAA, NJCAA, NCCAA and ACCA could do. Move all the larger schools enrollment wise to D1 from all levels. Make D2 a combination of small D2, D3, NAIA, USCAA, ACCA and NCCAA. Combined a revamp rules of D3, D2 and NAIA as D2. USCAA could be used as a transition of schools to regain their accreditation, 2 year schools that become 4 year and schools that ramp up sports like Texas-A&M-San Antonio and North Texas-Dallas. The changes that need to be changed include all the bills that targets all schools no matter at what level to pay their players.

Example, Central Washington becomes D1 and Washington could pay them cheap like Eastern Washington in all sports. This could save Washington more money towards paying their players. This would give CWU more money on sports and to pay their players.

Arkansas Tech did had a QB that played pro in the CFL most recently. A kid like Tanner Marsh at D2 could also get NIL or pay to play. Their are a lot of talent at D2 and D3 that do make it on the pro roasters. Look how the D1 board relaxing the number of schools making the jump to D1 lately? The NCAA and NAIA model is not going work with the new laws coming, and there have to be changes at all levels and conferences to readjust the chaos coming to them. I could see the top G5, FCS, D2 and D3 schools could be part of the P5 group.

Cal.Tech, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Hawaii, BYU, Gonzaga, UNR, New Mexico, Colorado State, Wyoming, Montana and the UC California schools could be part of the PAC 12 depending on the laws. I could see Northern Arizona, UNLV, UTEP and Utah State joining as well.

Johns Hopkins, Case Western, Chicago, Wash. Missouri, Wayne State, Buffalo, Stony Brook and some AAC schools could fit the Big 10. MIT, Carnegie Mellon and some Northeast D3 AAU schools could join the Ivy League. Catholic U., Emory and Clark can join the Patriot League.

The NCAA at all levels would not survive as the status as it is today. They need a more of a panel who are not bias towards P5 and get people to hand out punishment equally. Sorry, schools like Penn. State, Miami Florida, Florida State, Baylor, Ohio State, Michigan State and others who have an runaway athletic department that turned a blind eye on athletes, coaches and medical doctors run rampage that committed crimes that includes rape, child molestations, beating up women, to assault and other crimes. Miami Florida is still in trouble for accepting gifts from a ponzi scammer who is a booster. UNC and others should get what Mary Hardin-Baylor just got.

Most schools lose money on bowl games. The big winner is ESPN, who, guess what, want the players paid, likely so they can find ways to screw them like they screw the schools every December.
