Some really passionate people in here. And I'm glad for that. Because that just shows you, despite the differences. There are some people who really love this team and school.
Bickering is a good choice of words.
Some are passionate. Some bored. Some this is their only outlet to speak Huskie football.
Unfortunately for some, their only outlet to prove their "football knowledge" or reveal their "insider info."
And for some, all of the above.
You very accurately described almost every fan on every fan board, and covered just about every reason anyone has for posting anything. But imo you left one out: those who like to play judge or referee. Then again, without all those kinds of fans, inclusive, there would be no point to having these boards as an oulet (or inlet, if you're contrary).
I agree with the sentiment of HawaiiToNIU, and hopefully others ... better to have fans who are contrary than no fans at all. At least they care (and I hope this does not launch another board bicker about attendance).
This board has become for many (NOT all) like politics. Just because it's passionate doesn't mean correct. It has to be A or B, black or white, yin or yang, Carey sucked or was a god, no talent on this team don't blame Hammock or tons of talent and Hammock sucks. It's great to be passionate but many times it's delusional. These topics are not clear cut, especially this year. And most of it, opinion.
I guess it gets exponentially amplified when you are 1-4 with one win vs. a lesser IL directional school.Yes,it's frustration. But to many, it's more important to have a culprit to blame rather than see it objectively and see many factors.
I guess I'd rather have topics like "When's the B12 invite" and "how many do we score this week." Throw in maybe when does Kill/Doeren/Carey leave. And most importantly, something positive.
Your politics analogy is right on. Best description I've read about the board. And a shame it needs to be said.
Political analogy might be accurate.
I see it as an argument between those who wish to see NIU go beyond the MAC to being ranked in the top 25 versus those who are like coach Joe Novak who believe that the primary goal of NIU fb is winning tne MAC.
I passionately believe that this is the most consistent and most realistic yardstick to measure NIU football.
If we had a playoff system then I could see us thinking beyond a MAC title every year.
Historically when we left the MAC our program plummeted to the lowest depths of div 1a.
As an NIU football fan ofcourse I love to see my team nationally ranked grabbing headlines like the first part of 2003 or the majoc Orange Bowl appearance and the first 10 games of the next season.
How realistic is it to expect this year in and year out?
Is it borderline delusional to expect our FB team to achieve this?
If money was plentiful for the Football program, then maybe it would be worth serious consideration. Paying assistants $1m is certainly a step in the right direction, provided you have a winning program.
At present we are at the lowest point in 11 years interms of losing to a bottom 15th ranked team in the MAC West. Losing to Vandy who might well go 1-11 while Not as bad still doesn't help the situation.
We have embraced a system which seems different from what the last 4 coaches (whom in my opinion were all very successful) and have become the most penalized, mistake ridden FB team that I can remember.
It is possible that this is a necessary and very painful step backward inorder to go forward, however going from Top of the MAC last year and the most dominant MAC team of the decade that has not had a losing MAC season since 2007(which was a uniquely unusual year , due to so many injuries especially so early on in the season.)
We are ranked above Akron, second last in the MAC and lowest in the MAC West.
This is in my opinion an unacceptable position for NIU FB.
We have excelled in the MAC west for the past almost 2 decades.
Since 2008, 5-3 in 2014 and 3rd in the MAC West was our worst year of the decade.
This is NOT about Rod Carey, but about the current football coaches.
While I believe in giving Thomas Hammock a chance(three years), I am unable to accept the current situation as the previous coaches fault or lack of talent.
I cannot accept a 1-11 or 2-10 season as being OK, on the basis of faith.
I want an accounting to why our FB program is still so penalized five games into the season?
Moreover I have not yet written off this year.
We still have 7 conference games remaining.
If we are to leave the MAC as has been discussed for decades, I want a solid realistic plan.
If we had the funds to upgrade the sports programs, or the authority like Notre Dame or Army to schedule good teams, then becomming Independent ot talking about the B12 might be a worthwhile and realistic discussion.
